US singer caught up in viral beef coming to Perth soon

Two alternative-pop queens are in the middle of a social media war following an alleged diss track, with one of the stars set to touch down in Perth next year. Lana Del Rey and Ethel Cain recently got into a dispute online after Del Rey launched a new song, appearing to aim at Cain. In a video on Instagram on Wednesday, Del Rey previewed the song, sharing a video of her singing along to the lyrics. 'Ethel Cain hated my Instagram post / Think it's cute reenacting my Chicago pose,' she said. In another lyric, she references a headline about Cain in the New York Times, singing: 'The most famous girl at the Waffle House / I don't regret it.' The Born to Die singer appeared to confirm it was a diss track towards Cain in the comments of a news outlet's post about the song. 'I didn't know who Ethel was until a few years ago — when someone brought to my attention the disturbing and graphic side-by-side images she would often put up of me next to unflattering creatures and cartoon characters, making constant comments about my weight, I was confused at what she was getting at,' Del Rey wrote. 'Then, when I heard what she was saying behind closed doors from mutual friends and started inserting herself into my personal life, I was definitely disturbed.' Cain hit back, telling her fans Del Rey had blocked her on Instagram. 'Update: Lana Del Rey has blocked Ethel Cain on Instagram,' she wrote. The Chicago lyric appears to allude to Del Rey's relationship with musician Jack Donoghue, with the couple announcing their relationship with a photo outside a Chicago jail. Cain was rumoured to be dating Donoghue after Del Rey and reportedly posted a similar photo to Del Rey's, poking fun at it with the caption: 'Ok wait my turn. That photo has since been deleted. The Waffle House reference pointed to a May 2022 New York Times profile that referred to Cain as 'the most famous girl at the Waffle House' in the headline. Dey Rey made the news the following year after rumours she had a secret second job as a waitress at the Alabama breakfast venue. The beef comes after Cain announced Australian and New Zealand shows for her Willoughby Tucker Forever tour coming in February next year. She is set to start the tour in Auckland on February 13 before stopping in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and wrapping up at the Fremantle Arts Centre on February 28. The tour will support her new album Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You which serves as a prequel to her debut album Preacher's daughter. It recounts Cain's first love and their high school romance.

Ethel Cain Reveals She's In Her First-Ever Relationship at 27: ‘Love Was Always My Final Frontier'

Despite exploring themes of love in her music for years, Ethel Cain says she's never dated anyone — until now. While speaking to The Guardian in an interview published Thursday (July 24) — just a couple of weeks ahead of her new album Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You — the indie-pop star revealed that she recently began her very first romantic relationship at the age of 27. 'Love was always my final frontier,' she told the publication. 'I never explored it.' 'Who Wants To Be a Millionaire' Hot 100 Question Trips Up Drew Carey, Aisha Tyler & Audience Kesha Reveals Cassie Ventura Sent Her Flowers Ahead of MSG Concert: 'Love You Sweet Girl' 'I never progressed past the idea of love that I had as a teenager,' she continued, noting that her anxieties surrounding her newfound experiences with romance often made the recording process of Willoughby Tucker difficult — to the point where she would cry every day and beg for the album to feel finished. 'If [2022 album] Preacher's Daughter was my learning experience of what not to do with trauma and healing, Willoughby Tucker has been my experience of what not to do in love,' Cain added. 'The entire Preacher's trilogy is centered around love. Love lost, love gained, love perverted, love stolen. Love is everything to us. It doesn't matter what you love or who you love, but that you love something — and that love is what propels you forward every day. For better or worse, I think that is a beautiful thing.' Dropping Aug. 8, Willoughby Tucker will follow January's Perverts. Before that came Preacher's Daughter, which rose to No. 10 on the Billboard 200 this past April after a vinyl reissue — making her the first-ever openly trans artist to reach the chart's top 10. The interview comes shortly after Cain released a statement explaining and apologizing for controversial remarks she made many years ago during a period of time she called 'shameful.' She also wrote at the time that 'transphobic' trolls had resurfaced her past comments as part of a 'baseless attempt to assassinate my boyfriend's character.' 'He will address these claims in his own time on his own terms and I support him wholeheartedly,' she added at the time. Lana Del Rey and Ethel Cain spark social media feud over new song lyrics

A possible feud between Lana Del Rey and Ethel Cain has emerged on social media following the release of a video clip previewing Del Rey's new song, All About Ethel. In the Instagram post, Del Rey is seen sitting in her car while the track plays. The opening lyrics reference Cain directly: 'Ethel Cain hated my Instagram post / Think it's cute reenacting my Chicago pose.' Online comparisons quickly surfaced showing similar photographs of both artists posing with musician Jack Donoghue, formerly linked to Del Rey. Donoghue was photographed with Del Rey outside Cook County Jail in Chicago in July 2022, while a similar image featuring Cain and Donoghue dates back to 2021. Later in the track, Del Rey sings, 'The most famous girl at the Waffle House,' a phrase connected to Cain through a 2022 New York Times article. Del Rey herself was photographed working at a Waffle House in Alabama in 2023 as part of a publicity stunt. Following the clip's release, Cain posted on her Instagram Story, 'Update: Lana Del Rey has blocked Ethel Cain on Instagram.' Cain recently released her album Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You, earning a five-star review from Far Out magazine. Del Rey, meanwhile, has been working on a new album originally announced in November 2024 with a planned May 2025 release. Though delayed and renamed, the album will feature collaborations with Luke Laird, Jack Antonoff, Zach Dawes, and Drew Erickson. Two tracks have already been released, with another teased during her Stagecoach Festival performance in April 2025.

Fans Choose Gunna's ‘The Last Wun' as This Week's Favorite New Music

Gunna's The Last Wun tops this week's new music poll. In a poll published Friday (Aug. 8) on Billboard, music fans chose the Atlanta rapper's sixth studio album as their favorite new release of the past week. More from Billboard Gunna's 'The Last Wun': All 25 Tracks Ranked Which New Music Release Is Your Favorite This Week? Vote! Friday Music Guide: New Music From Jonas Brothers, Gunna, MGK, Laufey and More The Last Wun brought in nearly 57% of the vote, beating out new releases from artists like MGK (Lost Americana), Laufey ('Snow White'), Jonas Brothers (Greetings From Your Hometown) and Ethel Cain's (Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You). The 25-track album, the follow-up to last year's One of Wun, includes the singles 'Won't Stop' and 'Him All Along,' and features collaborations with Offset, Wizkid, Asake, Burna Boy and Nechie. Given the finality suggested by the project's title, fans have speculated that this may be Gunna's last release under YSL Records/300 Entertainment. His relationship with the label — founded by Young Thug — has become increasingly complicated in the wake of the high-profile YSL RICO trial. 'It'll come to me just through life and just living,' Gunna told Uproxx in June, describing his creative process. 'So for this album in particular, it's no theme. It's in current time of what's happening with me.' Gunna last topped the Billboard 200 with 2022's DS4EVER. All of his solo albums have landed in the top three on the chart and reached No. 1 on the Top Rap Albums chart. MGK's Lost Americana secured second place in the poll with 13% of the vote. The rootsy folk album marks the artist formerly known as Machine Gun Kelly's first full-length Americana project, following a run of hip-hop and pop-punk releases. The 'Other' category came in third, earning nearly 9% of the vote. Check out the full results of this week's poll below and visit Billboard's Friday Music Guide for more must-hear releases.
