Changing Crescent City Winn-Dixie to Aldi could spark food desert, cost dozens of jobs, mayor says
A small town in Putnam County is on the verge of losing its only full-service grocery store. Winn-Dixie has served Crescent City for nearly three decades — since 1997 — but now, it's on a list of 170 locations being converted into Aldi outlets. Mayor Michele Myers and the City Commission this week presented a resolution last Tuesday urging Southeast Grocers and Aldi to reconsider, saying that the closure would threaten more than 80 local jobs and risk turning Crescent City into a food desert. 'Without a full-service grocer, families here would be forced into 40-mile round trips just to buy produce and staples,' Myers said. 'We have smaller local stores, but they can't replace fresh food or the jobs this store provides.' [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] Steve Cummings, dean at Crescent City High School, added that Winn-Dixie is the town's second-largest employer. 'Students and parents work here,' he said. 'Walking through those doors feels like coming home.' The resolution will be sent to both Southeast Grocers and Aldi. [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter] The mayor said she hasn't reached out to state officials just yet. There is still time before the companies move forward with the planned conversion. Crescent City officials hope a show of community unity will persuade corporate leaders to keep their decades-old anchor store open. 18 Florida Aldi stores coming to Florida. Here's the list of where, current locations
Don't have an Aldi near you? Just wait, one is probably coming. The discount grocery store chain sold most of the unconverted Winn-Dixie and Harvey's locations the company bought last year, but they're still moving forward with the locations that were in progress along with new stores. There are currently 18 Aldi locations due to open soon across Florida, according to the company's coming-soon webpage, including Fort Lauderdale, The Villages, St. Cloud, and one opening in Ocala on Thursday, June 5. The first 100 customers will get gift bags with some fan-favorite products and a gift card, with a chance to win a $500 gift card through the weekend. "At our new Ocala ALDI store, shoppers will find that every decision we make, from our product selection to store layout, is to provide our customers with the best products at the lowest possible prices of any national grocer," said Matt Thon, Aldi regional vice president. "Our customers can save up to 36% on an average household's shopping list." About 220 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores will be converted to the smaller, simpler Aldi format by 2027, Aldi said. The company plans to open 225 new store locations in the United States in 2025, the most they've ever opened in a single year. The no-frills German grocery chain acquired Southeastern Grocers Inc (SEG), the parent company of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets, and announced an ambitious five-year, $9 billion plan to add 800 stores nationwide through new stores and store conversions. In less than a year, it turned around and sold most of them to a consortium of private investors led by SEG president Anthony Hucker, but kept the ones where conversion plans were underway. On Aldi's grand opening page, the chain lists 18 new locations, most of them former Winn-Dixie sites: Arcadia, 1737 East Oak St. Aventura, Promenade Shops, 20417 Biscayne Boulevard Boynton Beach, Cobblestone Commons, 8855 Boynton Beach Blvd., Suite 310 Bushnell, Walker Ridge Square, 1122 North Main Street Crystal River, Crystal River Shopping Center, 1651 Southeast US Highway 19 Deerfield Beach, Crossroads Shopping Center, 301 W Sample Road, Building #2 Fleming Island, Town Center at Eagle Harbor, 1545 County Road 220 Fort Lauderdale, Southland Shopping Center, 941 Southwest 24th Street Jensen Beach, Palm Breeze Plaza, 1105 Northeast Jensen Beach Blvd Lake Wales, Lake Wales Shopping Center, 1860 State Road 60 East Lehigh Acres, 61 Bell Boulevard North Lutz, Sunset Plaza, 18407 US Highway 41 Melbourne, The Ocean Springs Shopping Village, 961 E. Eau Gallie Blvd. Ocala, Marion Oaks Shopping Center, 184 Marion Oaks Blvd. Orlando, Metro West Marketplace, 1403 South Hiawassee Road St. Cloud, 3318 Canoe Creek Road Tampa, 15692 North Dale Mabry Highway The Villages, 820 Old Camp Road (former Winn-Dixie) Westlake, Grove Market, 5062 Seminole Pratt Whitney Road (former Winn-Dixie) Several more Winn-Dixie conversions are still ongoing, including locations in Leesburg, Ormond Beach, Port St. John, and Sebastian. The company also continues to open brand new Aldi stores, such as another being built in Port Orange. Several Aldi Florida locations, most of them former Winn-Dixies, have opened this year, including: Apollo Beach, 252 Harbor Village Lane Avon Park, 802 U.S. Highway 27 South Deltona, 2880 Howland Blvd. Fort Walton Beach: 798 Beal Parkway Jacksonville: 2261 Edgewood Ave. W Lakeland: 6902 Florida Avenue South Lithia: 16751 Fishhawk Blvd. Panama City: 3157 West 23rd St. Panama City Beach: 23200 Front Beach Road Pensacola: 312 East 9 Mile Road Port St. Lucie: 10300 Southwest Discovery Way Quincy: 1632 W. Jefferson St. Tampa, 2100 West Swann Ave. Aldi is an international chain of no-frills grocery stores with no coupons and few, if any, big-name brand products. Unlike Winn-Dixie, Aldi does not offer a meat counter, a deli, a pharmacy, a bakery, or a liquor store. There are no elaborate displays, no overhead music, a much smaller selection with few duplicates of item brands, lots of house brands, and fewer open hours. The goal of all of these is to keep prices low, the company says. You pay a quarter to get a shopping cart (you get it back when you return the cart), and you bag your own groceries with empty boxes from the store, bags you bought there or containers from home. There is a double-your-money-back "Twice is Nice" guarantee on its store brand products, and the chain regularly offers "FINDS," limited-time offers that change weekly or seasonally, and other discounted deals. The company does not offer a membership program. The Aldi chain was founded by Karl and Theo Albrecht in 1946 (Aldi is an abbreviated form of "Albrecht Diskont"). After the brothers got into an argument over whether the stores should sell cigarettes, in 1960, they split the company into Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd, which both operate stores internationally in different regions. U.S. stores, including the new Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores, are operated by Aldi Süd. Aldi Nord also owns Trader Joe's. Aldi U.S. is based in Batavia, Illinois. Aldi doesn't own Winn-Dixie, but it continues converting stores in Florida. Here's where
Discount grocery store chain Aldi may have sold most of the unconverted Winn-Dixie and Harvey's locations the company bought last year, but they're still moving forward with the locations that were in progress. The company has 10 more coming to Florida, according to their grand openings page, including a new listing for one in Deerfield Beach. In Volusia County, an Aldi opened in Deltona on May 1 at a previous Winn-Dixie location, but plans for a converted Winn-Dixie in Port Orange hit a snag when, on May 9, the city's building and fire departments marked the application as "deficient."
