Tampa Bay Buccaneers Offensive Star Tristan Wirfs Ranked Near Top of NFL
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Offensive Star Tristan Wirfs Ranked Near Top of NFL originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have certainly had stars on their team over the years, but maybe none along the offensive line as highly regarded as Tristan Wirfs. Advertisement After coming to Tampa Bay via the 13th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the 26-year-old former Iowa Hawkeye has made four Pro Bowls total across two different tackle positions, two First-Team All-Pro selections and one Second-Team All-Pro team. He's also been an important part of protecting Tom Brady and now, Baker Mayfield, as the Bucs offense was one of the best in the NFL in 2024. Wirfs has sometimes avoided national media attention and appreciation as the rest of the league doesn't always notice the Bucs and their players for whatever reason, but ProFootballFocus ranked him the No. 2 offensive tackle in the league heading into 2025. "There has been no better pass-blocking offensive tackle in the NFL in recent years than Wirfs. Not only did he permit zero sacks in 2024, but he also allowed pressure on just 1.9% of pass plays — the best rate among all offensive tackles. The gap between Wirfs and the second-place left tackle in pressure rate allowed — 1 percentage point — is the equivalent of the gap between the second- and sixth-ranked left tackles." Advertisement Wirfs is second to just Jordan Mailata of the Philadelphia Eagles, but ahead of other stalwart offensive tackles in the league, like 3. Rahawn Slater, Los Angeles Chargers, 4. Trent Williams, San Francisco 49ers, 5. Lane Johnson, Eagles, 6. Penei Sewell, Detroit Lions, 7. Christian Darrisaw, Minnesota Vikings, 8. Laremy Tunsil, Washington Commanders, 9. Zach Tom, Green Bay Packers and 10. Bernhard Raimann, Indianapolis Colts. Bucs star player makes a playful jab at Tom Brady
Tristan Wirfs was drafted by the Buccaneers in 2020, and it was a pick by Jason Licht and his staff that would change the trajectory of the franchise. One Super Bowl and several Pro Bowls later, Wirfs has become a fan favorite and someone well-respected by his current and former teammates. Speaking of former teammates, Wirfs recently spoke about one notable one that fans may remember. Wirfs was recently on the Calm Down Podcast hosted by Erin Andrews and Charissa Thompson and made a playful jab at his former quarterback, Tom Brady. Wirfs and Brady have always had a fun relationship and it lead to the former Hawkeyes offensive tackle addressing the added stress he had of protecting Brady. ""Yeah, Tom was my QB. They were like, 'Don't let anybody touch him, ' and I was like, 'Alright, I'll try my best' — he's fragile, he's old. Not that old, not that old!. . .He's like, two years younger than my mom. Sorry, sorry, sorry!". It was a fun listen, and Bucs fans could enjoy it as they prepare for the draft.

Tristan Wirfs almost was drafted by another team in the 2020 NFL Draft
The NFL Draft is always a monumental moment for every team in the league. It allows teams and their fans to have renewed hope in their franchise and shapes the future of everyone on and around the team. According to a recent interview between a former Browns coach and a reporter, fate was looking out for the Bucs during the 2020 NFL Draft. During the interview with SB Nation's Dawgs by Nature, when asked if running back Nick Chubb could bounce back from his injury, former Browns running back coach Stump Mitchell said he believed he did. While answering, he actually hinted that the Bucs almost missed out on their now-keystone keystone Tristan Wirfs. '. . .There is no question Nick can do, but those guys up front you are depending upon them in the passing game as well as the run game. You know Coach (Bill) Callahan ranted and raved about tackle Tristan Wirfs who was there when we picked. But we didn't pick him and took Jedrick Wills instead. Wirfs has been a Pro Bowler since Day 1 plus has a Super Bowl ring.' The 2020 NFL Draft is always talked about for the impact it has had on the league in regard to the quarterbacks it gave. The offensive tackle class, though, has shaped the league just as much by giving it Wirfs, Wills, Andrew Thomas, Mekhi Becton, and Austin Jackson in round one. While Wirfs has been the best of the group, with Thomas behind him, the others have either left their original team or are on the brink of leaving. Turns out the Bucs were very fortunate the Browns front office had other plans compared to their coaching staff.
