Former Iowa football great, Buccaneers OT to open season on PUP list
On Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced that the two-time All-Pro tackle would open the season on the physically unable to perform list (PUP for short). Wirfs is dealing with a right knee injury at the moment and is joined on the PUP list by his teammate and former Penn State Nittany Lion Chris Godwin, who is recovering from a dislocated ankle.
ESPN's Jenna Laine dove deeper into the Wirfs injury news and how it evolved from Wirfs missing minicamp for precautionary reasons to him landing on the PUP list.
Wirfs was held out of mandatory minicamp in June and stood on the sidelines wearing a heavy brace on his right knee. At the time, coach Todd Bowles indicated he was being held out for "precautionary" reasons. But he wound up undergoing arthroscopic surgery in July, which is when more damage was detected. Early indications are that Wirfs will "likely" miss the start of the regular season, sources told ESPN earlier this month. -Laine.
It's a tough blow for Wirfs and the Buccaneers, who are the favorites to win the NFC South once again. Wirfs is the only player in NFL history to be named an All-Pro at both left and right tackle and was set to block Baker Mayfield's blindside this season. While it sounds like the injury won't keep him out too long, it's a shame that Wirfs will likely miss the start of the regular season with it.
Wirfs was a fan favorite at Iowa, and Hawkeye fans are wishing him a speedy recovery as we get closer and closer to the 2025 season kicking off.

Ravens waived an undrafted rookie offensive tackle
The Ravens have made nearly a dozen roster moves over the past four days and just parted ways with another undrafted free agent. Baltimore signed former Jaguars running back D'Ernest Johnson on Saturday, and to make room on the roster, the Ravens waived undrafted rookie free agent offensive lineman Ozzie Hutchinson. Hutchinson (6-4, 305) signed with Baltimore following the 2025 NFL draft after he appeared in 41 games during his stint at Albany (2019-23), earning second-team All-CAA honors in his final season. Before the Hutchinson move, Baltimore announced five roster moves on Saturday, with the shocker being the release of undrafted rookie kicker John Hoyland. In all, the Ravens signed Brent Urban, Scotty Washington, and Baylor Cupp, while releasing Hoyland, tight end Sam Pitz, and linebacker Diwun Black. Tarik Skubal reacts to Detroit Tigers' MLB trade deadline moves
Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal reacted to the team's underwhelming MLB trade deadline moves while speaking from the dugout in-game on ESPN's "Sunday Night Baseball" at Citizens Bank Park on Sunday against Philadelphia Phillies. "I'm excited, it's the first time I've been part of a team that's acquired talent at the deadline," Skubal said during the fourth inning speaking with ESPN's Karl Ravech, Eduardo Pérez and David Cone. "I've been apart of four teams that have sold and that's not a fun place to be. ... I met a lot of them for the first time yesterday and just after the game we sat in the locker room and talked shop for probably an hour after the game and I think that's pretty cool. "I feel like we've kind of got a brand new team all of a sudden." The Tigers added five pitchers to the MLB roster at Thursday's deadline, though none are having great seasons. There are 49 games before the 2025 playoffs begin in early October. "A lot of us don't care either," Skubal said. "We're gonna play baseball, we know what we got. We know the talent that we have and we know what it takes to win baseball games. At the end of the day that's all that matters." Former Falcons running back eligible for Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2026
Todd Gurley, who spent one season in Atlanta, will be eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2026 The class of 2026 is shaping up to be special 👀 With the conclusion of the NFL's Pro Football Hall of Fame weekend, future Canton hopefuls can now turn their attention to next year's class. Former Falcons running back Todd Gurley will be among the players with first-time eligibility in 2026. After five productive years with the Los Angeles Rams, Gurley was released following the 2019 season. The Falcons signed the former Georgia standout as a free agent in 2020. While Gurley made a name for himself with the Rams, his lone season in Atlanta was underwhelming. Knee injuries got the best of the former top-10 pick. Gurley rushed for 678 yards and nine touchdowns for the Falcons, adding 24 catches for 164 receiving yards. Atlanta got off to an 0-5 start in 2020, prompting team owner Arthur Blank to fire head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Thomas Dimitroff. This didn't help Gurley in what ended up being his final NFL season. Gurley's career may have ended quietly, but he played at an MVP level early on, and should have an outside shot at the Hall of Fame. In 2014, he won the NFL's Offensive Rookie of the Year award despite missing three games. In 2017, he rushed for 1,305 yards and 13 touchdowns, with an additional 64 catches for 788 receiving yards and six touchdown receptions. Gurley was nearly as good during his 2018 season, recording 1,831 yards from scrimmage and 21 total touchdowns.
