Jessica Alba's Plunging Sculptural LBD and Bombshell Curls Are So Old Hollywood-Coded

Jessica Alba was the epitome of Old Hollywood glamour as she made an appearance at the Red Sea Film Foundation's "Women In Cinema" Gala on Thursday night. The actress revamped a classic LBD with a sculptural bodice and slit. Alba paired her plunging dress with statement 2025 Cannes Film Festival has been keeping fans fed with a sartorial parade of red carpet elegance, but Jessica Alba brought just as much glamour to France's nearby Cap d'Antibes on Thursday night. While making an appearance at the Red Sea Film Foundation's "Women In Cinema" Gala, the entrepreneur swapped out her recent bikini streak for an Old Hollywood style moment. Alba stunned in a plunging strapless LBD with a sculptural bodice and royal family-coded statement jewelry while posing at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc. Alba—who filed for divorce from ex-husband Cash Warren in December after 16 years of marriage—continued to show off her single life glow-up as she stunned at the gala. She revamped the classic LBD with a structured asymmetrical bodice, which featured 3D ruffles and rosettes that gave the strapless dress a sculptural feel. A slit on her right side broke up the dress's column silhouette and flashed her pointy-toed black heels. Alba, who spoke at the event, accessorized with a diamond pendant necklace with a large ruby-colored stone, a diamond cocktail ring, and large diamond stud earrings. She leaned into an Old Hollywood beauty moment by wearing her caramel-highlighted brown hair in an elegant side-parted style with bombshell curls. The Honest Company founder highlighted her features with black eyeliner, luminous blush, and a nude matte lip. It's been a busy couple of months for the multi-hyphenate, who recently rang in her 44th birthday in late April. Alba appeared to open up about her healing journey amid her divorce as well as her hopes for finding love and connection as she penned a personal birthday message. 'Sometimes I get caught up in all the things of life and my drive for perfection is exhausting so I'm making space to accept myself—flaws and all and release the need to control,' she wrote in the emotional post. 'As I move into this next year, I wish for myself what I wish for everyone - to feel loved. To feel seen. To feel accepted. And to know you are worthy of your biggest dreams.' 'I'm just an advocate and want to continue to keep moving forward with that, with my pledge from 2017, so it ain't over,' said the Oscar-winning actor at the Women in Motion dinner at Cannes, part of a program set up by luxury group Kering in 2015. A post shared by Jomana Alrashid | جمانا الراشد (@jomanaalrashid) Kidman, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of Virginia Woolf in 'The Hours' in 2002, has worked with many of the leading male directors of her generation, but she pledged in 2017 to shoot with a female director every 18 months. She told journalists in the French Riviera resort town earlier on Sunday that in the eight years since, she's worked with 27 female directors, including projects in development. 'Part of it is protecting and surrounding the women with almost like a force field of protection and support,' she said. Other stars at the dinner included Dakota Johnson and Julianne Moore as well as Patrick Schwarzenegger of 'The White Lotus.' Director Guillermo del Toro was also in attendance. Brazilian director Marianna Brennand received the initiative's emerging talent award, which includes a grant of $55,920 to work on a second feature project. According to Women in Motion organisers, the share of women directors increased to only 13.6% from 7.5% among the top 100 box office films in the United States between 2015 and 2024. Seven out of the 22 films in competition this year were made by women, including an entry from Julia Ducournau, one of only three women to have ever won the Palme d'Or top prize.

Red Sea fund honors 7 women in cinema at Cannes festival

CANNES: Seven Saudi Arabia and international women filmmakers and artists were honored at the Cannes International Film Festival on Thursday night. For the latest updates, follow us on Instagram @ Elham Ali, Jacqueline Fernandez, Gaya Jiji, Amina Khalil, Rungano Nyoni, Sarah Taibah, and Engfa Waraha were recognized for their work at the Red Sea Film Fund's Women in Cinema Gala event. Several of the women spoke to Arab News about the importance of women's voices in cinema, and had high praise for the Kingdom's efforts to support them. A post shared by Red Sea Film Foundation (@redseafilm) South Asian actress and performer Fernandez said: 'At my 15th year in film, and being part of the industry, this really culminates and really motivates me to keep going and to do more and to rise and it couldn't have come at a better time. 'Just meeting the women and the talent here, seeing how women are supporting women on such a platform has been so inspiring. I feel every artist constantly needs to feel motivated and inspired, and this is one of those moments for me.' The former Miss Universe honoree transitioned into film in the Indian industry with breakout performances in 'Murder 2' (2011) and 'Housefull 2' (2012). A post shared by Red Sea Film Foundation (@redseafilm) She also starred in commercial successes 'Race 2' (2013) and 'Kick' (2014) opposite Salman Khan. 'I think that their (RSFF) passion to promote film and to promote the technicians and to promote the industry has been very, very admirable. 'The fact that also they are not just focusing on Saudi, but they're looking at more of a global reach for their talent, and they're also looking at connecting and bringing together other cultures within that. 'It really is what cinema is all about, right?' she said. A post shared by Red Sea Film Foundation (@redseafilm) Saudi Arabia actress and presenter Ali emphasized the importance of investing in domestic cinema infrastructure, as exemplified by efforts of the Film Commission, Film AlUla, the RSFF, and independent grassroots initiatives. 'There's nothing more important than cinema to present a history and cement stories. 'Cinema is the platform to transfer our stories to the world, and the fastest to do that, and that's why I'm with and support this industry and I still (strive) for more. A post shared by Red Sea Film Foundation (@redseafilm) 'Yes, we've reached such a beautiful point today by seeing our work displayed at international festivals, like Cannes and others, but that's why we need more. 'We're taking quick, powerful, and creative steps,' she said. She added that cultural sensitivities remain a challenge but younger filmmakers were dealing with them slowly. A post shared by Red Sea Film Foundation (@redseafilm) Zambian-Welsh director, screenwriter and actress Nyoni told Arab News: 'I feel fortunate to be recognized. 'It feels like someone, somewhere is listening or at least paying attention a little bit, but also because the Red Sea (Film Fund) spotlights specific areas that are not very popular. 'People always go to the usual suspects and I always love especially when people come to Africa. A post shared by Red Sea Film Foundation (@redseafilm) 'It's such a rarity because, actually, the benefit is you don't get to be very popular, these are not very sexy places to go to, and I love that they finance filmmakers. 'That's the bit that I find really amazing.' Nyoni gained recognition with her early shorts, including 'The List' (2009), and with her more recent feature films, 'I am not a witch' (2017) and 'On becoming a guinea fowl' (2024). They have all earned her numerous awards including the Un Certain Regard Award for Best Director at Cannes last year. A post shared by Red Sea Film Foundation (@redseafilm) Syrian filmmaker Gaya Jiji, whose first feature 'My Favorite Fabric' was also selected in the Un Certain Regard section in 2018, said the right support for women in cinema is emerging now globally. She attended the Red Sea Film Festival three years ago, which supported her movie. And the festival is a co-producer of her second feature 'Pieces of Foreign Life.' She said that the RSIFF has helped create space for women, specifically from Saudi Arabia, which was a step to fulfilling the Vision 2030 plan. Thai actress Waraha said the RSIFF has given a spotlight for women in Asia to have a bigger platform on a global level. A post shared by Red Sea Film Foundation (@redseafilm) 'In Thailand, it's not that difficult for women to be in cinema, but on an international level, especially women of color, there's language barriers. 'There's looks that limit (me) to certain roles, which make it harder for me to bring into the international level with blockbuster movies,' she said. Waraha gained recognition in 2023 for her lead role in the hit TV series 'Show Me Love,' which marked her breakout performance. Her role in 'The Paradise of Thorns,' which she considers her breakout moment, earned her the Best Actress of the Year award at the 2025 Thailand Box Office Awards. 'I feel proud,' she said about receiving the Women in Cinema honor. 'And I want to keep this as inspiration for both myself and for others.' 'I always say women are half of society, and they need to be half of the industry as well. Honoree Taiba has dedicated her work to shedding light on 'real women' in both a physical and emotional sense. 'As much as I'm really, really, really proud to be one of the seven highlighted women in cinema, I hope that we reach a point of equality in the industry that there are no such special events just for us,' she said. She is the creator, writer and lead of the acclaimed dark comedy series 'Jameel Jiddan,' and most recently finished shooting her feature film 'A Matter of Life and Death,' which she stars in and wrote. 'As a woman — and I'm sure a lot of women relate to that — we really doubt our deserving of things. 'This year, I decided that … I'm worth it. I really worked hard, and I'm really proud of myself, that I'm in the right place at the right time of my life.'

Alessandra Ambrosio exudes glamour in a plunging black gown as she joins stunning Shanina Shaik and Jessica Alba at Cannes gala

The red carpet was awash with glamorous stars on Thursday as celebrities attended the Red Sea Film Foundation's Women In Cinema Gala at Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc. Leading the way was Alessandra Ambrosio, who put her phenomenal figure on display in a plunging gown with a velvet bodice and satin skirt. The garment cinched in at her slender waist and was embellished with silver brooches that matched the crystals on her long black gloves. The Victoria's Secret model, 44, finished off her look with chandelier earrings and towering peep-toe heels. Also dressed to impress was fellow VS model Shanina Shaik, 34, who turned heads in a low-cut silver dress that was encrusted with thousands of crystals and pearls. The long-sleeved gown also featured a racy thigh high split to show off the Australian star's toned pins and silver heels. Jessica Alba, 44, was also looking phenomenal for the evening, opting for a strapless black gown that she accessorised with a dazzling ruby necklace. She wasn't the only actress in attendance, with Eiza Gonzalez and Imogen Poots also making a glamorous entrance. Eiza, 35, looked radiant in a tan figure-hugging dress with a low-cut neckline that she paired with diamond jewellery. Imogen, 35, also looked sensational in a butter yellow gown adorned with sequins. The Red Sea Film Foundation hosted the Women in Cinema Gala to celebrate the achievements of emerging female talent in front of and behind the camera, who are redefining the film industry in the Arab World, Africa and Asia. It is one of the many star-studded events taking place during Cannes Film Festival. The Cannes Film Festival originally emerged in the World War II years, when the rise of fascism in Italy led to the founding of an alternative to the then-government controlled Venice Film Festival. In the time since, Cannes´ resolute commitment to cinema has made it a beacon to filmmakers. Countless directors have come to make their name. Alessandra's garment cinched in at her slender waist and was embellished with silver brooches that matched the crystals on her long black gloves Jessica Alba, 44, was also looking phenomenal for the evening, opting for a strapless black gown that she accessorised with a dazzling ruby necklace Eiza, 35, looked radiant in a tan figure-hugging dress with a low-cut neckline that she paired with diamond jewellery as she posed with Shanina This year is no different, though some of the first-time filmmakers at Cannes are already particularly well-known. Kristen Stewart (The Chronology of Water), Scarlett Johansson (Eleanor the Great) and Harris Dickinson (Urchin) will all be unveiling their feature directorial debuts in Cannes´ Un Certain Regard sidebar section. Many Cannes veterans will be back, too, including Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning), Robert De Niro - who´s to receive an honorary Palme d´Or 49 years after Taxi Driver premiered in Cannes - and Quentin Tarantino, to pay tribute to low-budget Western director George Sherman. Over recent years the star-studded extravaganza has arguably won more attention for the outfits worn by its celebrity guests than the roster of feature films being screened on the Croisette. But new nudity rules, devised for 'the sake of decency,' have been implemented at this year's festival. According to organisers, the austere move is an attempt to stifle the celebrity trend for 'naked dresses' - namely provocative outfits that reveal considerably more than they conceal - on the red carpet. 'For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as any other area of the festival,' states a Cannes festival document. 'The festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit red carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules.' The surprise new policy features in a recent festival-goers charter - released with a series of outlines regarding expected public behaviour. Guests are expected to converge on the Grand Auditorium Louis Lumière for some of the highest profile film screenings across a packed two-week schedule in Cannes. It's understood that the iconic venue now adopts a more conservative dress code, with suits, dinner jackets and floor-length evening gowns generally favoured over headline grabbing ensembles. Classic little black dresses, cocktail dresses, pant-suits, dressy tops and elegant sandals, 'with or without a heel', will also be permitted. While the decision to implement a more stringent policy will be a first, it is not known if French TV broadcasters, wary of airing nudity, played a role in its enforcement. Major red carpet events, including the Cannes Film Festival, are aired in France by France Télévisions Recently attracting more models and influencers than actors and filmmakers, the annual ceremony has seen an increase in risque red carpet fashion statements.
