JLR spruces ‘Land Rover' Defender up once again inside and out
Introduction of new tech and exterior changes hasn't come with any price increases following the initial line-up refresh in January this year. Having refreshed its line-up back in January, JLR South Africa has introduced yet more upgrades to the Defender range, this time externally and inside than mechanically. New outside Applicable to all three bodystyles, 90, 110 and 130, the exterior revisions consists of 22-inch diamond turned dark grey alloy wheels, a tinted finish for the restyled taillight clusters, a dark oval badge on the grille, new headlights and a gloss black finish for the grille bars across all variants. Changes inside Underneath, no alterations have been, however inside, all Defenders receive a slightly revised centre console, upgraded materials and a new 13.1-inch Pivi Pro infotainment system. Image: JLR On the technology front, Adaptive Off-Road Cruise becomes an option for the first time, while somewhat controversially, a new Driver Attention Alert monitor has been fitted atop the steering column similar to many current Chinese vehicles. OCTA bespoke Besides the regular Defender range, the hardcore OCTA has not been omitted from the changes despite having only made its world debut in July last year. Image: JLR Centring on its exterior as it benefits from the same interior and tech updates as its siblings, the OCTA gets textured graphite trim, Phosphor Bronze outer edging on the Defender bonnet script, bumpers and side vents, optional carbon fibre accents and four colours for the 20-inch forged alloy wheels. The final change is a revised choice of colours with only Charente Grey and Petra Copper being carried over. Image: JLR New, therefore, is Borasco Grey, Sargasso Blue and Patagonia White Matte additionally furnished with a matte protective film. Nothing new up front Up front, the unchanged engine line-up consists of the 3.0-litre Ingenium straight-six turbodiesel in the D250 and D350, the mild-hybrid Ingenium 3.0-litre straight-six turbo in the P400, and the 2.0-litre Ingenium four-cylinder turbo-petrol paired to an electric motor and battery pack in the plug-in hybrid P400e. For the former pair, outputs remain at 183kW/570Nm and 257kW/600Nm while the P400, without the electric hardware factored in, develops 294kW/550Nm. Image: JLR In combined form, the plug-in hybrid P400e outputs 297kW/640Nm and, according to JLR, will travel emissions-free for 59 km. At the range's summit, the venerable AJ-V8 5.0-litre supercharged V8 soldieries on with outputs of 386kW/626Nm in the simply titled Defender V8. Unique to the 130 is an integrated air compressor not available on the 90 or 110. Image: JLR The OCTA, meanwhile, makes use of the mild-hybrid BMW-sourced 4.4-litre twin-turbo producing 467kW/750Nm. As before, all engines are mated to the ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission. Price Price-wise, no changes have been made since the January updates. This also includes the standard five-year/100 000 km maintenance plan and eight-year/100 000 km battery warranty on the P400e. Land Rover Defender and Octa get interior, exterior and tech upgrades

Image: Supplied Launched five years ago, the (Land Rover) Defender has received several upgrades, including finishes, design, and technology enhancements across 90, 110 and 130 body designs as well as the Defender Octa. It gets a new headlight design with signature detailing and fog lights as standard, and flush rear lights with smoked lenses. There are new exterior colour options that include Woolstone Green and Borasco Grey, enhanced detailing and upgraded materials, as well as a larger 13.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control is available as an option, while the Defender 130 is now available with an optional integrated air compressor. The Octa gets a new Sargasso Blue exterior colour, a Patagonia White exterior with Matte Protective Wrap and tactile textured Graphite accents. Exterior The Defender receives optimised surfaces for the new front and rear bumpers finished in Silicon Silver or Carpathian Grey Satin on most models, and a new textured pattern for the bonnet inserts and side vents, while the gloss black grille-bar with a dark oval badge is now standard. It stands on newly designed 22-inch seven-spoke Diamond Turned Dark Grey alloy wheels. Interior The dash-mounted gear-shifter has been repositioned, and the centre console has been redesigned to make the most of the space on offer. A new sliding section hides small items out of sight in a closed cubby, and as part of the Signature Suite upgrade, it gets removable side pockets and cable routing to keep items charged without wires trailing around the cabin. There's still the option for the centre 'jump' seat for three-abreast seating across the front on most models. Video Player is loading. Image: Supplied For the first time, there's optional Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control that allows the driver to set a desired comfort level when negotiating rough terrain. The system automatically adjusts the speed to maintain the desired level of comfort while driving off-road. A new Driver Attention Monitor features a driver-facing camera that provides audio-visual alerts that can be adjusted, enabled or disabled via the driver assistance menu. Defender Octa The fastest and most capable Defender yet, with a 467kW 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, gets a revised colour palette, which, in addition to the existing Charente Grey and Petra Copper, there's now Borasco Grey and Sargasso Blue with a coarse sparkle. Image: Supplied In addition to the existing Matte Protective Film available on all Defender OCTA exteriors, there's also an optional Patagonia White Matte Wrap. There are also new Textured Graphite finishes with a matte surface and high-intensity metallic flake on key touchpoints on the exterior, including the front and rear bumpers, bonnet vent inserts, side fender vent surrounds and two-piece bonnet script with a Phosphor Bronze outer finish. Chopped Carbon Fibre exterior and interior accents can now be specified as an option, along with four interior colourways and a choice of wheel and tyre combinations, including 20-inch forged alloy wheels. Behind a chopped carbon fibre cover, there's a specially-integrated 4,500kg-rated winch. The Defender range is priced from R1 801 100.

Defender updated for 2025
Land Rover has updated its Defender range for 2025, introducing new styling, upgraded technology and new options across the 90, 110, and 130 body styles. All Defender variants now feature updated headlights with a new lighting signature and integrated fog lamps as standard. At the rear, flush-mounted tail lights get a smoked tint for a cleaner appearance. There's also a new gloss black grille bar and darkened badging across the board. Land Rover has expanded the colour palette too, with contemporary hues like Woolstone Green and Borasco Grey. New 22-inch Diamond Turned Dark Grey alloys are also available. A driver monitoring camera has been added as well. Some models gain sliding compartments and removable side pockets, while the option remains to configure a centre jump seat for three-across front row seating. More Capable Off the Road Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control is now available for the first time in a Defender. Similar to All-Terrain Progress Control but more advanced, this tech lets drivers set a comfort level while navigating tough terrain. The system automatically adjusts throttle inputs to maintain that comfort level, leaving the driver to focus on steering. Defender 130 adds an optional integrated air compressor to its list of gear, making tyre pressure adjustments easier during multi-surface excursions. Accessories and Personalisation Land Rover continues to lean into customisation with updated accessory packs: Explorer, Adventure, and Urban. New blacked-out roof racks, cross bars, and front underbody shields add visual impact, while a dark-finish rear scuff plate now joins the existing bright version. Practicality enhancements include fixed or deployable side steps and bonnet decals with updated Defender script across all body styles.
