Bukit Song viaduct to open ahead of schedule

MIRI: The construction of the 300m Bukit Song viaduct under the Work Package Contract (WPC) 11 of the Sarawak Pan Borneo Highway project is expected to be completed ahead of schedule, says Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. The Works Minister said that during a field visit on Sunday, he witnessed the progress of the viaduct's construction, which had to be undertaken due to unsuitable soil conditions in the area that made reclamation unfeasible. In a post on his official Facebook page, Nanta explained that this factor had contributed to minor delays in its overall construction. 'However, the construction of this viaduct, which was originally scheduled for completion in October, is now expected to be completed next month. 'With this, the entire highway will be fully completed for the benefit of the people of Sarawak,' he said, Bernama reported. According to Nanta, WPC 11 is the final package among the 11 work packages under the project. During the visit, he also inspected the 4.2km road upgrading works and the replacement of water pipes by Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd, which became necessary following a pipe burst incident prior to the start of construction. 'Although there is a slight delay, this additional work is essential to ensure an uninterrupted water supply for Miri City and to prevent future road damage,' Nanta said.

The Works Minister said the viaduct, originally scheduled for completion in October, is now targeted to be ready by next month. 'I am very excited and pleased with the progress of the Bukit Song viaduct construction, which is expected to be completed ahead of schedule. 'Once ready, it will mark the full completion of the highway in its entirety for all PBH users in Sarawak,' he said in a post on Facebook. Nanta, who is Kapit MP, had earlier visited the project site where he was briefed on the construction of the Bukit Song viaduct. He explained that the viaduct had to be constructed as the area was unsuitable for embankment works due to soil movement. 'This had caused some delays to the overall construction of PBH Sarawak,' he said, adding that WPC 11 is the final package of the 11 work packages under the PBH Sarawak project. During his visit, Nanta also inspected the 4.2km road upgrading works and the replacement of old Laku water pipes (now under Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd) in the area. He said the pipe replacement works were necessary following previous pipe bursts before construction began. 'Although there was some delay, these additional works are crucial to ensure that water supply in Miri city will not be affected and that new roads that will be built later will not be at risk of damage in the future,' he said. Nanta also called on the Ministry of Works, through the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak, to ensure that there is continuous engagement between the project teams and contractors, as well as to regularly carry out strict monitoring to ensure smooth progress and timely delivery of the project. alexander nanta linggi Bukit Song lead Pan Borneo Highway Sarawak viaduct
