DCP Rashmitha Rao Counsels Drug Addicts At Rehab Centre
Nagpur: As part of the ongoing Operation Thunder anti-drug awareness campaign, deputy commissioner of police (zone 4) Rashmi Rao personally interacted with and counselled over 50 recovering drug addicts at Prerna De-Addiction Centre on Besa-Pipla Marg. The session was conducted on June 24 under the weeklong World Anti-Drug Day events by Nagpur city police. Held between 8pm and 9pm, the session focused on educating in-patients at the centre about the physical, mental, and social consequences of substance abuse. Rao, along with assistant commissioner of police (Ajni division) Narendra Hiware, urged the recovering individuals to embrace a drug-free lifestyle and reclaim their lives and families. Speaking at the session, Rao emphasized that drug abuse doesn't just destroy health but also shatters homes and children's futures. "Rehabilitation is not just about quitting a substance — it's about building a stronger life," she said. The event was part of the broader Operation Thunder initiative launched by police commissioner Ravinder Singal, with awareness programmes scheduled from June 20 to 26 across the city. Prerna De-Addiction Centre, run by Prashant Bharti for the last 14 years, has treated over 1,200 patients. According to Bharti, nearly 50–60% of those treated have fully recovered and reintegrated into society, many now living stable, addiction-free lives. DCP Rao was accompanied by a team of cops led by PI Mukund Kawade of the Beltarodi police station.

Nagpur police's anti-narcotics drive also champions communal harmony
Nagpur: City police's 'Operation Thunder' — a week-long anti-narcotics campaign slated to culminate on June 26, the World Anti-Drug Day — is transcending law enforcement initiatives by weaving a message of communal harmony while fighting substance abuse. Uniting diverse communities in a shared fight for a drug-free future, city police now aim to make Nagpur free of addiction. With an innovative and inclusive slogan, 'Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Isai, Nashe Se Dur Raho Bhai', the campaign emphasises that the ill-effect of addiction spares no religion or caste. The rallying cry, 'Nasha Nako, Disha Havi' (no to drugs, yes to purpose), is resonating across Nagpur through vibrant rallies, street plays, and awareness events. CP Ravinder Singal's vision extends beyond law enforcement, emphasising prevention through education. "Our duty is to prevent crime at its roots, starting with young minds in schools and colleges," he said. This humane approach of running an anti-drug campaign positions the police as reformers, fostering a drug-free, harmonious city. The campaign's multifaceted approach includes school competitions like essay writing, poster-making, and reel contests to inspire youth to reject drugs and embrace ambition. Social media platforms are amplifying slogans like, 'Jo karega nasha, uski hogi durdasha' (Those who indulge in drugs face trouble). Police are aslo cracking down on drug dens, and smuggling networks, said DCP (crime) Rahul Maknikar. Singal is also hosting a national-level conference on anti-drug abuse on June 25, to be attended by diverse stakeholders, including policymakers, educators, and community leaders. The platform aims to spark a dialogue on addiction and unity. 'Operation Thunder 2025' stands as a beacon of hope, urging citizens to join this people's movement to ensure the youth chase dreams, not drugs, in a united and harmonious society.

Anti-drug day programmes to be held at Kannur Central Jail
Marking World Anti-Drug Day and the 10th anniversary of the ban on smoking in Kerala's prisons, Malabar Cancer Care Society (MCCS) will conduct a series of awareness programmes at the Kannur Central Jail on June 26. The events, aimed at promoting drug-free and smoke-free environments, will begin at 2 p.m. and will be inaugurated by Kannur District Medical Officer Dr. Piyush Namboothiripad. The programme will include anti-drug and anti-tobacco awareness sessions led by expert doctors, musical performances by inmates who have overcome substance addiction, and an anti-drug magic show by renowned magician Prashant Vengad. MCCS president D.D. Krishnanadha Pai said this year also marks a decade since the implementation of the historic smoking ban in Kerala prisons, first enforced in 2015, following a 2014 government order. He said the initiative was driven by the MCCS after non-smoking inmates lodged complaints about having to share space with smokers. Notably, Kerala became the first State in India to enforce a complete smoking ban inside prisons, which was later adopted by prisons across North India and eventually nationwide, he claimed. In 2014, MCCS also launched 'No Tobacco Clinics' within prisons, offering monthly counselling and awareness sessions for inmates who wished to quit smoking. The organisation has since continued to lead numerous awareness drives on tobacco and drug addiction in correctional facilities. The June 26 programme is expected to serve as a powerful reminder of the continued importance of anti-drug and anti-tobacco initiatives, especially within the prison system.
