CLT20-style World Club Championship 'on the cards', says ECB chief executive: 'That's the next logical step'

England and Wales Cricket Board CEO Richard Gould believes that a World Club Championship, which would be similar to the Champions League T20 that had hosted its last edition in 2014, would be the 'next logical step' and could become a reality in the near future. read more Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni bats against Yorkshire Carnegie at Durban's Kingsmead during the fourth season of the Champions League T20 in 2012. AFP It's been more than a decade since the Champions League T20 (CLT20) was last hosted, with cricket's answer to the UEFA Champions League in football having lasted a total of six editions between 2009 and 2014. And as is the case in the Indian Premier League, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians happen to be the most successful teams in CLT20 history with two titles each. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), however, is confident it can bring a CLT20-style tournament back into the cricketing calendar in the form of a revamped World Club Championship for the T20 format. Especially considering how T20 leagues have sprung up all over the globe with nearly every Full Member and even associates such as UAE hosting one of their own. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'That is on the cards. Without doubt, at some point, there will be a World Club Championship - for both men and women. That's the next logical step,' ECB Chief Executive told ESPNCricinfo. CLT20 'was ahead of its time', says ECB CEO Only a handful of cricket-playing nations besides India used to conduct T20 leagues around the time the CLT20 – which was jointly run by the BCCI, Cricket Australia and Cricket South Africa – was in existence, Australia's Big Bash League and West Indies' Caribbean Premier League being the most notable examples during this time. The Pakistan Super League would come into existence shortly after the final CLT20 season and Sri Lanka (Lanka Premier League), England (The Hundred), South Africa (SA20), USA (Major League Cricket) as well as UAE (ILT20) would go on to establish their own leagues. Bangladesh Cricket Board too has been in existence for well over a decade now, but had somehow never featured in the tournament. The CLT20 had been plagued with issues from the very beginning; the inaugural edition was originally supposed to take place in 2008 but had to be postponed by a year due to the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai. And what was to be the seventh edition of the tournament in 2015 was called off due to lack of interest from cricket fans despite providing more context to T20 leagues by having franchises from different parts of the world face each other instead of being limited to their own leagues. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'That tournament was ahead of its time. Commercially, it couldn't keep up with the expectations on it, but it was a really good event,' added Gould, who was CEO of Somerset when it participated in the inaugural edition in 2009.

Champions League T20 to return as World Club Championship? ECB chief reacts

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is exploring the viability of a revamped World Club Championship for T20 cricket, after more than a decade since the final edition of the defunct Champions League T20 (CLT20). The final edition of the CLT20 took place in 2014 with CSK defeating KKR in the summit clash in Bengaluru. The tournament started 2009 before going defunct in 2014. advertisementSeveral countries have launched their own franchise leagues in the past few years, including England (The Hundred), South Africa (SA20), the UAE (ILT20) and the United States (MLC). Richard Gould, the board chief executive, told ESPNcricinfo that he feels that the Club Championship, for both men and women, could be the next logical step for the evolution of the sport. "That is on the cards," Gould said. "Without doubt, at some point, there will be a World Club Championship - for both men and women. That's the next logical step."advertisementThe CLT20 was run by the BCCI, Cricket Australia and Cricket South Africa and was discontinued as the organisers said that its limited public following as the main reason behind the tournament's demise apart from the commercial aspect. However, Gould feels that the tournament was ahead of its time and was a really good event. "That tournament was ahead of its time," he said. "Commercially, it couldn't keep up with the expectations on it, but it was a really good event."The World Club Championship will require support from eight of the 10 IPL teams as they have investments in teams in other countries as well. IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal had hinted that the BCCI could look into the Club Championship if it can create value for the game.

Gary Neville left stunned by Liverpool after 'incredible' £10m transfer

Gary Neville has been left stunned by Liverpool raking in £10million for Trent Alexander-Arnold - despite the full-back only having one month remaining on his contract. Real Madrid announced the signing of the full-back ahead of the transfer window opening. Alexander-Arnold, 26, heads to the Spanish capital to link up with Los Blancos in time for the beginning of the Club World Cup. Real have been keen to secure his signature early, and saw an approach to the Reds turned down in January. The new La Liga star has signed a six-year contract at the Bernabeu and Les Merengues handed Liverpool an £8.4m fee. The Reds also save a month of Alexander-Arnold's salary as Real Madrid pick up the tab to see the Anfield side earn a tidy £10m package. The Spanish giants will be relieved to have a right-back at their disposal having seen Federico Valverde and Lucas Vasquez fulfill the role after Dani Carvajal was ruled out for the season. New boss Xabi Alonso will be able to call upon Alexander-Arnold from the beginning of his tenure. Ex-Manchester United captain and Salford City co-owner Neville is in disbelief at the deal. Though, he can understand the thought process the Club World Cup hopefuls went through. "Honestly, no, I mean, I'm stunned by that really, that £10m has changed hands for, but there is £100m pounds at stake in this World Club Championship and Real Madrid have got a great chance of doing it," he said on the It's Called Soccer podcast on the US Overlap channel. "So you imagine if he plays in this tournament, they haven't got a right back that's playing there naturally at this moment in time. So it could be money well spent in four or five weeks. "I just find it crazy that you're spending £10m to have a player for five, six games. It's incredible." Neville has been impressed with Liverpool's work so far this summer. The Reds have signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen and look set to add Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez to their ranks too. He said: "I think when you're talking about winning the league, what is it that improves you? I mean, the only thing that's going to improve you when you win the league is signing world-class players, or players that have got the potential to be world-class players. So signing Wirtz is fantastic. "Frimpong and then there's talk of Kerkez as well, deals with their right and left-back situations. So to get those three done, if they were to get those three done quite quickly, would be smart business. But I wouldn't have expected anything else from Liverpool. "Maybe slightly surprised that they've gone so heavy on Wirtz in terms of the fee. They don't normally go that big, but Slot deserves it, by the way. He waited 12 months for a player to sign." Albion reported to be keen on rising star from Brazilian champions

A Brazilian full-back turned winger is the latest player to be linked with Albion. Botafogo wideman Cuiabano has been subject of strong interest from the Seagulls, according to a report. David Ornstein at The Athletic understands two bids have so far been made, the second potentially rising to about £6.7 million. Cuiabano, 22, emerged as a left-back but has recently been shifted further forward on the left in a 4-4-2 set-up. He previously played for Gremio and has reportedly been of interest to several European teams. GEORGINIO RUTTER BEATS THE INJURY BLUES Clubs in Brazil are moving into position ahead of the transfer window. Botafogo won the league title last season and are currently battling for qualification in the Copa Libertadores. It is known Cuiabano was watched by two clubs from Italy and another from Spain ahead of the January window but Botafogo held on to him. Fenerbahce are reported to have made a bid. Although his exit in July is seen as likely, Botafogo are keen to keep hold of Cuiabano for the World Club Championship. Albion have Pervis Estupinan as their undisputed first choice left-back and other options in more attacking areas. Cuiabano is likely to be one of many players linked with Albion, who have a good track record in the South American market.

Erik ten Hag emerges as contender for top Bundesliga job - as Dutchman eyes return to management seven months after his sacking by Manchester United

Erik ten Hag has emerged as a contender to replace Xabi Alonso should he confirm his expected departure from Bayer Leverkusen. Talks have yet to take place as Alonso has still to confirm his plans with Real Madrid waiting in the wings for the Spaniard. But former Manchester United boss Ten Hag is on a list of potential candidates that Leverkusen would like to speak to should Alonso leave. Ten Hag has a good reputation in Germany from his time working at Bayern Munich and was heavily linked with the Borussia Dortmund coaching role in January. However, the 55-year old, who was sacked by Manchester United in October and continues to be paid compensation by the club, has been keen to recharge and take his time before leaping straight back into management. Leverkusen are second in the Bundesliga, eight points adrift of Bayern Munich. However, Leverkusen boss Alonso is favourite to succeed Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid. Ancelotti had been lined up to become national team coach of Brazil but that is now in doubt as Madrid have not given permission yet. Though the 65-year old Italian coach is still expected to leave the Bernabeu, Madrid have yet to clarify plans of who will be in charge for the forthcoming World Club Championship. Their reluctance to give Ancelotti the green light has put his potential appointment as Brazil boss in jeopardy.
