2026 COMPETITION LAUNCH - Middle East Business News and Information

(Dubai, UAE, 2 JUNE 2025) – The 19 th edition of the Sony World Photography Awards is open for submissions and free for all to enter on . The Sony World Photography Awards is a definitive platform for the celebration and discovery of contemporary photography. Since its first edition in 2007, the Awards has recognised the seminal images and stories that shape our visual language and is one of the most prestigious photographic awards programmes in the world, providing global exposure and new opportunities for photographers. Organised by Creo, the Awards form the core part of Creo's photography programming strand, the World Photography Organisation. Sony supports the Awards to help the continued development of photographic culture by giving a global platform to today's talent. Photographers worldwide are invited to submit to the Awards' four competitions: Professional , celebrating outstanding series of work between five to 10 images across 10 categories; Open , rewarding the best single images of the year across 10 categories; Youth , championing images by emerging talent aged 19 and under; and Student , highlighting the projects of photography students across the globe. Additional initiatives include the National & Regional Awards , the Latin America Professional Award , the Japan National Award , and the Alpha Female Award , as well as the Sustainability Prize . Entry to the Awards is free and photographers are judged anonymously by a panel of industry leading judges. INSIGHTS Introduced for the 2025 Professional competition and returning for a second year, Insights is an additional prize element that sees the 10 category winners joining a day of tailored sessions in London with leading industry figures. From a range of commercial and institutional backgrounds, these experts offer the photographers specialised guidance on ways to continue to widen their platform and to find new opportunities to showcase their work; from insights into private collectors of photography, to sessions on photobook publishing, and behind the scenes access to the acquisition process of public collections. STUDENT COMPETITION BRIEF: TOGETHER For this year's Student competition, photographers are asked to respond to the brief Together. Togetherness can take many meanings, shapes and forms. It is a subject rich for exploration. Throughout history photographers have looked at life in communities in both the human and the natural world, considering the ways that individuals exist as members of a group. For this year's brief, students are invited to explore the theme of togetherness from any angle they choose, looking at the concept in its broadest sense. From intimate stories of camaraderie to big and small communities working towards shared goals, to places and spaces that bring us together, and patterns of connection in the natural world – the brief invites students of photography to consider the innate need for sociality in all living beings. Images can be taken on any device, shot in any style, and approached from any angle. While creative responses are encouraged, photographers must stick to the brief. 2026 PRIZES AND DEADLINES The Sony World Photography Awards is open to submissions from 1 June 2025. Sony World Photography Awards 2025: The year's best images unveiled

A female skater in India, a park ranger transporting Congolese crocodiles and a taxidermist preparing a deceased wolf for display are among the subjects of the past year's best images, according to judges of the Sony World Photography Awards. On Tuesday, the World Photography Organisation unveiled the shortlisted entries and finalists in its annual competition's 10 professional categories. In each of the categories — which span landscape, still life, sport and the environment, among others — judges selected three finalists and up to seven shortlisted photographers. In April, organizers will hand the prestigious Photographer of the Year title, as well as a $25,000 cash prize and a range of Sony equipment, to one of the 30 finalists. In a press statement, jury chair Monica Allende said this year's shortlist and finalists showed 'great originality and clarity of vision.' 'From narratives of community-building, to explorations of collective memory, to empowering stories of people challenging conventions, these works offer a diversity of perspectives on our moment in history,' she added. Now in its 18th year, the Sony World Photography Awards also include student and youth contests, as well as 'open' categories for non-professionals. Organizers say they received almost 420,000 entries across this year's various competitions. Scroll down to see images from the Sony World Photography Awards professional competition. A selection of photos will be on show at Somerset House in London from April 17 to May 5, 2025.

UAE-based Filipino wins at Sony photography awards

That who welcomes suggestions for self-improvement and utilises discovered latent talents properly and rightly so, shall profusely benefit well in due time. Take the case of Donell Gumiran into the artistic design industry for years. He recently added another feather in his cap – so to speak – having been 'anonymously selected by judges' as the 'United Arab Emirates National Award' winner at the Open Competition of the 18-year-old 'Sony World Photography Awards.' The annual event of the UK-based 2007-founded World Photography Organisation, encourages the greenhorns and the veterans of the lens to ceaselessly broaden their talents in the area of 'photographic culture.' Thus, Gumiran's black-and-white 'A Timeless Tradition' – an abaya-clad Emirati woman, a crisp representation of the 'rich heritage of the Arab culture' as the woman that 'exudes a sense of pride and strength' contemplatively looks at the placid horizon with an old fisherman's boat by the Abu Dhabi seaside – shall be among the exhibits at the Somerset House in London from April 17 to May 5, 2025; after the April 16 formal proclamation of the competition over-all winners in the Student, Youth, Open and Professional categories. On Wednesday evening, Gumiran explained that through 'A Timeless Tradition,' he wanted to sharply validate the interconnectedness of the locals to their land and their traditions that shape their Emirati culture.' The 51-year-old recollected, 'I was a newbie in Dubai when an acquaintance invited me to join him at photography workshops.' 'Easy convincing. I saw the opportunity that attending would help me become progressive in my job as the team leader of a design studio and agency that hired me direct from Metro Manila where I became a working student in the university. I looked at it as a way to much better encourage my colleagues in their respective tasks. That we help one another in our professional growth,' he continued, also saying that he saw that virtue tacitly in place in his workplaces back home, prior to his UAE adventure. 'I also saw it as a chance for additional income when I am already ready,' Gumiran quickly added. Nearly 19 years in Dubai, the unico hijo of a father from the Northern Luzon province of Isabela and a mother from the Western Visayan province of Iloilo, took to the numerous weekend training-cum-workshops of two Filipino clubs under the auspices of the Philippine Consulate General-Dubai almost 18 years back, to assist overseas Filipino workers in continuing learning education and skills upgrade. He learnt a lot from the Lightform Photographers' Guild and OPPPs. Extremely thankful for the weekend theories and exposures, Gumiran was among the graduates in 2010. He reminisced: 'While others concentrated on events, fashion shows, and landscapes for their catalogues, I pursued my desire to document every inch of culture I saw.' 'By so doing, I record and doing so, I create timeless stories and history. That is what I have been doing. I always have my camera with me,' he said. From the press release of the awards which quoted Gumiran: 'I am truly grateful to be chosen as the 'UAE National Award' winner for the 'Sony World Photography Awards 2025. Photography allows me to tell stories and capture moments that matter. 'A Timeless Tradition' is special to me because it reflects the rich culture and heritage of the UAE. I am thankful to Sony and the World Photography Organisation for giving photographers like me a chance to share our work with the world.' Through Gumiran's discovered latent talent in photography, his body of work, which include his own writings have been appreciated by the National Geographic Espana, Forbes, BBC News and Vogue. Art galleries and other international competitions in Abu Dhabi, London, Paris, Berlin, Tokyo, Madrid, New York, and Moscow became host to his productions. The Office of the President of the Philippines-National Commission for Culture and the Arts has quintuply honoured him by way of the prestigious 'Ani ng Dangal' ('Harvest of Integrity'). In 2023, the design director was declared the 'Emirati Futurism International Award in the Creative Design Category' winner.
