Dayton Metro Library offers free lunches, and more for kids this summer

Previous coverage of the Dayton Metro Library above. DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – To bridge the gap while schools are out, the Dayton Metro Library is offering summer resources for kids in the Miami Valley. The resources include everything from free lunches, games, activities, tutoring and pre-k prep. Local library opens applications for upcoming Writer and Author's Symposium DPS Summer Lunches: These lunches will help fight food insecurity and give kids/teens a friendly place to hang out. Both the West Branch and the Northwest Branch will have lunches, Monday through Friday, from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. The program will run until July 31. (There will be no lunch service on Juneteenth and the Fourth of July.) Homework Help, Summer Edition: Available to kids from First Grade to those entering Senior year. This unique program will teach kids STEM concepts, make cool art projects with help from local artists and grow a garden to learn about healthy will be available at the Burkhardt, Northwest, and West Branches Monday through Thursday, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The program will run until August 6. (There will be no homework help class on Juneteenth.) Kids under 8 must be accompanied by an adult. Y on the Fly: Every Wednesday, the Northwest Branch will host the YMCA's mobile unit from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Kids/teens can enjoy fun games and free healthy snacks. The last Wednesday the mobile unit will visit is July 30. Kettering Health boosting cybersecurity as recovery from attack continues Kindergarten Club: This program is created for kids who will be starting Kindergarten in the fall. Kids and their parents/guardians will get to enjoy a variety of activities. Caregivers will be giving tips on teaching early-literacy activities, social/emotional learning opportunities and skills in their homes. Previous coverage of last year's festival is above. DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The massive Celtic Fest Ohio will kick off this upcoming Saturday in Waynesville. Renaissance Park, 10542 East State Route 73, will be rocked on Saturday, June 14, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The festival is a vibrant celebration of Celtic heritage. There will be live musicians, traditional dancers, authentic food and a vendor market. There will be a diverse selection of Celtic music, from traditional to contemporary Celtic rock. The headline performers are as follows: Albannach Bastard Bearded Irishmen Father Son and Friends Jameson's Folly Miami Valley Pipes & Drums Poor Man's Gambit SCYTHIAN Sweet William The 42nd Royal Highlanders The Drowsy Lads The Piper Jones Band Local library opens applications for upcoming Writer and Author's Symposium Notable activities include the following: 42nd Royal Highland Regiment Encampment, learn about Celtic and American history from reenactors. Seek and Find Etching, an event to teach kids about etching and knotwork. Miller Border Collies, watch spectacular dogs in herding demonstrations. Miami Valley Pipes and Drums, enjoy the beauty of historical Celtic music with the festival walkthroughs. The all-ages Shamrock Shenanigans Fireman Rally, $18. (Each ticket is donated to the Massie Township Fire Department.) Afternoon tea, a $28 serene and peaceful gathering in the garden. Taste of the Isles, a $55 small plate historic menu tasting experience. Alcohol-based events are 21+ only, with a photo ID ready, and are as follows: Irish whiskey tasting, $39, learn about five premium Irish Whiskies behind the Aleing Knight Pub. Guinness Experience, $34, learn the six-step iconic Guinness Pour and personalize an engraved glass at the Tasting Tent. Dave Chappelle announces summer shows; tickets on sale Friday Tickets are available for purchase online here. It's $17 for everyone 13 years old and above. Previous coverage of the Dayton Metro Library. DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The Dayton Metro Library is now receiving applications for its 2025 Writer and Author's Symposium. This is an exciting opportunity for writers to engage with the vibrant local community. There are two open roles for the event. Featured Writers: These writers will be able to directly engage with readers, promote and sell their books. Facilitators: A collection of writers, publishers, and editors who will critique the first ten pages of an emerging writer's work. This will help them improve their work and give them vital feedback. Any writer in the Miami Valley interested in either position for the Symposium can apply here, by of before Friday, July 11. Dayton Library to host senior pizza parties with college help If selected, the DML will contact the writer with additional information. Anyone can visit the Symposium, which will be held on Saturday, September 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., throughout the Main Library downtown. There will be workshops, mini writing-themed activities and an exploration of local authors. Registration is not required.
