Some popular car models are going away. See which models are being discontinued by 2026.
It's getting harder to find new sedans. The Chevrolet Malibu, Subaru Legacy and Volvo S90 are among a handful of vehicles that won't return for the 2026 model year. Their departure comes as automakers adjust their portfolios to meet shifting demands among U.S. drivers ‒ namely, increased interest in SUVs and electric vehicles. Car sales accounted for just 19% of the market between January and October 2024, according to car shopping site Edmunds. SUVs, in comparison, made up 58%. "The downfall of sedans continues" even though they are often more affordable than larger counterparts, said Justin Fischer, media specialist at online car marketplace CarEdge. "We're seeing lots of affordable sedans going away, so we expect to see the average selling price of new cars in America increase in 2026 because of that alone." Here's a roundup of models that are hitting the end of the road in 2025. Audi A4 Audi's A4 sedan is on its way out, as previously reported by USA TODAY. The sedan will be replaced by the new A5 Sportback as part of Audi's efforts to shift all combustion-engine cars to odd-numbered model names and all even-numbered cars to electric models, said spokesperson Mark Dahncke. The new A5 Sportback went on sale in June, and a RS 5 high-performance model is expected "in the near future," Dahncke said. Cadillac XT6, XT4 Cadillac is ending production of the XT6, a three-row SUV, toward the end of 2025. The XT6's target demographic was households with an annual income of at least $200,000, according to the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network. Production of the gas-powered SUV at parent company General Motors' Spring Hill Assembly plant in Tennessee is set to be replaced by the Vistiq, a new all-electric SUV, according to the Free Press. As for the XT4, production of the small SUV at GM's Fairfax assembly plant in Kansas City, Kansas, ended in January. BMW XM base BMW is axing half of its XM portfolio. The automaker in June said it would offer just one XM SUV model, the XM Label, and scrap the XM base design for model year 2026. The XM Label is the most powerful road vehicle produced by BMW M, a subsidiary of BMW focused on high-performance vehicles, with a total system output of 738 horsepower. The XM base, by comparison, offers up to 644 horsepower. Chevrolet Malibu General Motors wrapped up production of the Chevrolet Malibu, a midsize sedan, in late 2024, making 2025 the last model year for the nameplate. The discontinuation comes as GM prepares its Fairfax assembly plant to produce Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicles and the gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox. In June, the company said the plant is on track to begin building the Bolt by the end of 2025 and the Equinox beginning in mid-2027. How often should you inspect brakes? 5 costly mistakes to avoid Infiniti QX50, QX55 The QX50 compact luxury SUV and QX55 luxury crossover coupe will no longer be available in the Americas after the 2025 model year, spokesperson Ashli Bobo said. Bobo noted that the brand offers a 'refreshed' QX60 luxury crossover SUV and recently introduced the QX80 Sport, another luxury SUV. Infiniti is also set to unveil two new nameplates: the QX65 crossover coupe and Vision QXe electric SUV. Lexus LC Hybrid Coupe, RC and RC F Lexus earlier this year announced that the brand would say goodbye to the RC and RC F sports cars after the 2025 model year. The decision comes after a decade on the market and more than 90,000 units sold, according to a January news release. Lexus is also dropping the LC Hybrid Coupe in the U.S. market for the 2026 model year. Parent company Toyota's June sales report shows just 7 LC Hybrids were sold in the first six months of 2025, compared to 790 gas LCs. Mercedes-Benz EQB The EQB, an all-electric compact SUV, will not be offered in the United States or Canada after model year 2025. The company remains 'fully committed to electrification," said spokesperson Andrew Brudnicki, who noted the new all-electric CLA sedan is set to arrive at U.S. dealerships later this year. Porsche 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman Porsche confirmed the two 718 sports cars will end production this year. The gas-powered Macan, a compact SUV, is set to end sometime in 2026. Subaru Legacy Production of the Subaru Legacy wrapped up this spring, according to a news release from Subaru. The automaker sold more than 1.3 million units spanning six generations in the United States since the sedan's 1989 debut. In an April statement, Subaru said the discontinuation 'reflects market shifts from passenger cars to SUVs and crossovers and Subaru's transition to electrified and fully electric vehicles." The company previously announced plans to produce eight electric vehicle models by 2028. Volvo S60, S90, EC40 Sales of the S60, a midsize luxury sedan, and the S90, a large luxury sedan, ended in the United States with the conclusion of the 2025 model year. Volvo spokesperson Thomas Schultz said the brand is axing the models as it continues to evaluate its portfolio 'to align with customer needs as well as sales demand,' noting that the market for sedans has been waning. Tariffs also played a role in the decision to end S90 sales in the United States, Schultz said. Volvo ended production of the S60 at its South Carolina plant in 2024 after five years of production, turning its attention to building the EX90 electric SUV and XC60 SUV. The automaker also stopped importing the EC40 electric SUV, Schultz said.

No End in Sight? US BMW XM Sales Fall 24% in Q2 2025
You'd no doubt recognize the XM if you happened to see one (of the apparently few) on the street. A front-end design like no other, complete with attention-grabbing, glowing grilles, makes the SUV almost impossible to ignore. This was probably, at least partially, the point when BMW launched the Halo M product back at the end of 2022. But sales figures show that BMW may have totally missed the mark with the XM - a rare coincidence with what most brand enthusiasts have been saying since the SUV's inception. Things started off okay, if not amazing, for the XM. It launched in late Q1 2023, and in Q2 of the same year, 762 models made it into customer garages. That's not bad when you consider the BMW XM is a somewhat low-production model commanding a price deep in the six figures. Q1 2024 even saw growth for the model - likely as a result of the SUV coming to market in the US late in the quarter, but hey, we'll give credit where it's due. Moving 541 units, an increase of 32.3% over the previous year, the XM looked to hold its own. Unfortunately, the good news for XM sales ended there, a year and a half ago. XM sales fell 29.5% and 30.7% in Q2 and Q3 of 2024, respectively, and most recently, in Q2 2025, they continued to fall another 23.8%, with just 409 SUVs finding new homes. While obviously the Bavarian automaker isn't producing as many XMs as, say, the BMW 3 Series, it isn't totally due to low production that the model isn't moving. A quick search online reveals over 200 XM models sitting on dealer lots, including 2023 and 2024 models. It's unlikely to be reactionary since it's about the time in the XM's product lifecycle for an update, but BMW is making changes to the 2026 BMW XM. The newest model year drops the base model, leaving only the XM Label. The 2026 XM Label enjoys 738 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque - nearly 100 more horsepower than the standard car - and some special red badging details. For 2026, BMW will introduce new exterior paints and interior upholstery, wheels, and welcome light animation. That also means the price of entry rises to over $186,000, when previously, you could get a base model for around $160,000. Unless, of course, BMW does something wacky and debuts the 2026 XM Label at a lower MSRP than the 2025 model. Which, while unlikely, isn't impossible. Despite announcing and showcasing the model's changes for 2026, the automaker is mum on pricing, claiming it will be announced closer to the model's August start of production. If the brand really wants to move some metal, a lower MSRP would be a great way to do it. After all, it's hard to claim the XM is at all close to the aspirational model BMW M hoped it would be. Either way, the elimination of the base model will effectively doom the XM to a continued downward sales trend for the remainder of its potentially short life. The XM is a victim of marketing. I've had a decent chunk of time behind the wheel of the XM, and the saddest thing about seeing it fail is that it's actually a pretty competent car. If you pulled all the silly badging and re-positioned it as an X8, priced alongside the top-tier X7 M60i or something similar, it would likely be a pretty good seller. Yes, it's still ugly, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I was never the target audience. It will be interesting to see how BMW pivots from the XM to the next halo car and what lessons the brand might have learned along the way. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

BMW streamlines its local XM range with new XM Label
BMW South Africa is consolidating its XM range with a single model offering. From now on customers will only be able order the updated flagship XM Label derivative that boasts a formidable plug-in hybrid powertrain producing 550kW and 1,000Nm worth of torque. These impressive numbers come courtesy a 4.4 l twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine and a permanently excited synchronous motor integrated into the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. Sent to the road via an M xDrive all-wheel-drive system, BMW says the XM Label will scorch its way from 0-100km/h in 3.8 seconds and reach a maximum speed of 290km/h courtesy of the M Driver's Package fitted to South African units as standard. In keeping with its phenomenal straight line performance, the BMW XM Label sports a corner-capable chassis armed with all manner of aids, including adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers and active roll stabilisation. There's also a locking rear e-differential and integral active steering. While new 23" M lightweight alloy wheels are available as an option, an M Sport braking system is standard and comprises six-piston, fixed-calipers at the front and single-piston, floating-calipers units at the rear. When not tearing up drag strips or terrorising supercars, drivers can make use of this M car's emissions-free electric driving mode that offers a range of up to 76km thanks to a 25.7kWh battery pack. AC charging has been boosted from 7.4kW to 11kW, meaning the latter can be replenished from zero to 100% charge in two hours and 20 minutes. Exterior updates to the BMW XM Label include enhanced customisation options such as BMW Individual Frozen Tanzanite Blue metallic paint and a BMW M kidney grille in high-gloss black. There's also a new welcome light animation to show off with after dark. The interior can be spiced up with new Merino leather upholstery colour ways. Standard features take the form of a BMW Curved Display with M-specific content, a head-up display, parking assistant plus, BMW Live Cockpit Professional with the latest generation iDrive system and a three-dimensional prism headliner jewelled with no less than 100 individual LED light units. There's also customisable ambient lighting, four-zone automatic climate control and a high-performance Harman Kardon sound system.

Facelift BMW XM range revealed with streamlined solitary model
Previous base model departs, leaving the renamed Label as the sole derivative without any powerplant changes. Introduced two years ago as the M division's powerful product ever, BMW has restructured the controversial XM range by making the previously known Red Label the only variant as part of the SUV's first mid-life overhaul. New outside Now known simply as the XM Label, the updates are minor and externally consist of standard 22-inch M light alloy wheels in place of the previous 21-inch wheels, the removal of the red accents, new, optional, 23-inch gloss black M light alloy wheels and a gloss black finish for the kidney grille surround. ALSO READ: Sci-fi in red as BMW unleashes new 550 kW XM Red Label A new welcome animation and Frozen Tanzanite Blue colour from the BMW Individual catalogue round the XM's aesthetics off. Subtle changes inside Mostly colour and upholstery changes have taken place inside. Image: BMW Inside, the revisions are even more subtle and limited to a new black Merino leather upholstery option with Coffee Brown detailing, or Silverstone Merino leather with black detailing. Same powerplant, quicker charging Up front, BMW has upgraded the 25.7-kWh battery pack to now support AC charging up to 11 kW instead of the previous 7.4 kW. No uptakes in power have, however, been achieved with the electric motor still developing 145kW/280Nm and the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 430kW/750Nm. XM now rides on 22-inch alloy wheels as standard instead of the previous 21-inches. Images: BMW Combined, the XM Label outputs 550kW/1 000Nm that goes to all four wheels via the eight-speed Steptronic that acts as housing for the electric motor. The claimed all-electric range is 76 km and the top speed once again limited to 250 km/h or 290 km/h with the optional M Driver's Package selected. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h takes 3.8 seconds. In South Africa soon Confirmed to make its official public debut at this weekend's 24 Hours of Le Mans, the XM Label has been approved for South Africa, though an official date of reveal hasn't yet been made. While pricing wasn't disclosed either, the German-market variant will start at €183 400, which amounts to a directly converted R3 767 919. Locally, pricing for the Red Label currently starts at R3 650 000, thus expect a price increase once sales of the 'new' Label commence.
