BMW streamlines its local XM range with new XM Label
BMW South Africa is consolidating its XM range with a single model offering. From now on customers will only be able order the updated flagship XM Label derivative that boasts a formidable plug-in hybrid powertrain producing 550kW and 1,000Nm worth of torque.
These impressive numbers come courtesy a 4.4 l twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine and a permanently excited synchronous motor integrated into the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. Sent to the road via an M xDrive all-wheel-drive system, BMW says the XM Label will scorch its way from 0-100km/h in 3.8 seconds and reach a maximum speed of 290km/h courtesy of the M Driver's Package fitted to South African units as standard.
In keeping with its phenomenal straight line performance, the BMW XM Label sports a corner-capable chassis armed with all manner of aids, including adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers and active roll stabilisation. There's also a locking rear e-differential and integral active steering. While new 23" M lightweight alloy wheels are available as an option, an M Sport braking system is standard and comprises six-piston, fixed-calipers at the front and single-piston, floating-calipers units at the rear.
When not tearing up drag strips or terrorising supercars, drivers can make use of this M car's emissions-free electric driving mode that offers a range of up to 76km thanks to a 25.7kWh battery pack. AC charging has been boosted from 7.4kW to 11kW, meaning the latter can be replenished from zero to 100% charge in two hours and 20 minutes.
Exterior updates to the BMW XM Label include enhanced customisation options such as BMW Individual Frozen Tanzanite Blue metallic paint and a BMW M kidney grille in high-gloss black. There's also a new welcome light animation to show off with after dark.
The interior can be spiced up with new Merino leather upholstery colour ways. Available options include BMW Individual Night Blue, Black, Vintage Coffee Brown and Silverstone. Standard features take the form of a BMW Curved Display with M-specific content, a head-up display, parking assistant plus, BMW Live Cockpit Professional with the latest generation iDrive system and a three-dimensional prism headliner jewelled with no less than 100 individual LED light units. There's also customisable ambient lighting, four-zone automatic climate control and a high-performance Harman Kardon sound system.

Time-attack specialists head to East London
Border Motorsport Club are set for a busy weekend of motorsport action at the iconic East London Grand Prix Circuit as they host round four of their regional main circuit championship on Saturday, followed by a Top End Run on Sunday. The Top End Run will see the cars starting on the short back straight, going through Beacon Bend onto the main straight for a 600m sprint where a speed gun will be used to ascertain the top speed of the day. The organisers are anticipating about 40 cars and they will be competing in three different normally aspirated classes, namely four-cylinders and rotary engines, six-cylinders and then eight/ten/twelve-cylinders. The event has also been opened up to motorcycles and at the time of going to the press there was interest shown from a couple of the local two-wheel racers. The event has attracted a wide variety of cars as well as some of the Simola Hillclimb big names and will be led by local heroes Darron Gudmanz and Martin, Wade and Jody van Zummeren in their thunderous Nissan GTRs along with Gauteng visitor Craig Czank, who will be in a Nissan GTR 32, and Gqeberha's Gordon Nicholson in his super smooth Audi R8. A host of East London's local racing drivers joining in on the action are Shaun Gradwell in his BMW E36, Shaun Vallance in a BMW M4, Grant Godfrey, Pramesh Hooka, Devesh Reddy, Viswa Williams and Leeroy Randall in Nissan GTR R35s, Bevan Choudree in a turbocharged VW Polo, Gary Schultz in a Nissan SR20, Johan van der Westhuizen in a BMW V8, Bryce Choudree in a BMW E46 M3, Naveen Reddy in a VW Golf 7R, Laren Odendaal in a Audi RS3, Viswa Williams in a Ferrari 488GTB, Kyle Hart in a Range Rover SVR, Diego Machado in a Mercedes GT53, Jeandre Coetzer in a Nissan 370Z, Buntu Jwaai in a Audi RS5 and Lincoln Randall in a VW Golf. Facelift BMW XM range revealed with streamlined solitary model
Previous base model departs, leaving the renamed Label as the sole derivative without any powerplant changes. Introduced two years ago as the M division's powerful product ever, BMW has restructured the controversial XM range by making the previously known Red Label the only variant as part of the SUV's first mid-life overhaul. Locally, pricing for the Red Label currently starts at R3 650 000, thus expect a price increase once sales of the 'new' Label commence.
