Microsoft Raising Xbox Prices—And $79.99 Games Are Next
The age of the $70 game may be coming to an end, as Microsoft has unveiled a new pricing structure for its games and hardware—one that also sees the Xbox Series line of consoles become more expensive. Microsoft is raising the prices of nearly its entire catalogue by a significant margin. In an announcement today, the company introduced a revised pricing structure that takes effect May 1, impacting Xbox Series consoles and accessories. The new structure includes a proposed $10 increase on software, adding more than 10 percent to the cost for consumers. However, this change to software pricing is scheduled to go into effect at a later date. Price hikes on Xbox hardware are being rolled out globally, with the exception of wireless headsets, which will only see increases in the U.S. and Canada. All price adjustments are listed in the chart below. (If an item is not listed, its price remains unchanged.) Item Old Price New Price Price Differential Xbox Series S 512GB Edition $299.99 $379.99 $80 Xbox Series S 1TB Edition $349.99 $429.99 $80 Xbox Series X Digital Edition $449.99 $549.99 $100 Xbox Series X $499.99 $599.99 $100 Xbox Series X 2TB Galaxy Edition $599.99 $729.99 $130 Xbox Wireless Controller – Limited Edition $79.99 $89.99 $10 Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 (Core) $139.99 $149.99 $10 Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 (Full) $179.99 $199.99 $20 Xbox Wireless Headset $109.99 $119.99 $10 The new pricing on Xbox consoles and peripherals is already live, according to the official Xbox announcement. Microsoft also stated: 'We also expect to adjust the pricing of some of our new, first-party games starting this holiday season to $79.99,' referencing Mario Kart World's confirmed $79.99 launch price for the Nintendo Switch 2, announced during the recent Nintendo Direct. Xbox issued the following statement on the new pricing: 'We understand that these changes are challenging, and they were made with careful consideration given market conditions and the rising cost of development. Looking ahead, we continue to focus on offering more ways to play more games across any screen and ensuring value for Xbox players.' While both Xbox and Nintendo have committed to increasing software prices, it remains to be seen whether Sony will follow suit.

Microsoft Is Raising The Price of Its Xbox Series Consoles, Games Will Hit $80 This Holiday, Some Gamers Are Falsely Blaming Nintendo
Black America Web Featured Video CLOSE Source: CHARLY TRIBALLEAU / Getty / / Microsoft / Xbox Welp, it's going to cost you more if you're still in the market for an actual Xbox Series X or Series S console. Xbox announced today that it is raising the prices of the Xbox Series S and Series X consoles globally, except for accessories, which will see their prices increase in the US and Canada. First-party titles are expected to reach the $80 threshold by the holiday season. The price hike will take effect beginning May 1. You can peep them below: Xbox Series S 512 – $379.99 (up from $299.99) Xbox Series S 1TB – $429.99 (up from $349.99) Xbox Series X Digital – $549.99 (up from $449.99) Xbox Series X – $599.99 (up from $499.99) Xbox Series X 2TB Galaxy Special Edition $729.99 (up from $599.99) Xbox Wireless Controller (Core) – $64.99 Xbox Wireless Controller (Color) – $69.99 Xbox Wireless Controller – Special Edition – $79.99 Xbox Wireless Controller – Limited Edition – $89.99 (up from $79.99) Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 (Core) – $149.99 (up from $139.99) Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 (Full) – $199.99 (up from $179.99) Xbox Stereo Headset -$64.99 Xbox Wireless Headset – $119.99 (up from $109.99) Here's what Xbox had to say about the price hikes in an official statement: We understand that these changes are challenging, and they were made with careful consideration given market conditions and the rising cost of development. Looking ahead, we continue to focus on offering more ways to play more games across any screen and ensuring value for Xbox players. A History of Price Hikes This marks the first time the Series S has seen a price hike since its 2020 release. Xbox committed to the console's current prices in 2022, following PlayStation's price increase for the PS5 due to inflation. The Xbox Series X experienced a price increase in 2023 in most countries, except the US, and Xbox Game Pass underwent multiple price hikes globally. These new Xbox price increases should not come as a surprise, as PlayStation announced price hikes for the PS5 in the UK, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand three weeks ago. Nintendo recently faced criticism after revealing that the Nintendo Switch 2 would cost $450, one $80 game ( Mario Kart World ), and price hikes for Switch 2 accessories following Donald Trump's misuse of tariffs. Somehow This Is Nintendo's Fault Speaking of Nintendo, gamers, of course, are BIG MAD about the price hikes and already pointing fingers at someone. Gamers should blame Donald Trump and his misguided trade policies, as well as his misuse of tariffs. Still, somehow, Nintendo is being blamed for what Xbox's decision, with 'Thanks, Nintendo' immediately trending after the news broke. While we understand that Nintendo is not at fault for Microsoft's or even a potential decision from PlayStation, we acknowledge gamers' frustration with having to spend more money at a time when prices are increasing. There doesn't seem to be enough money to cover these expenses. You can see more reactions in the gallery below. Microsoft just increased all Xbox prices: Grab one before the hikes go into effect
Gaming is about to get a lot more expensive — at least for Xbox fans. Effective today, May 1, Microsoft is increasing the price of Xbox consoles and controllers, and not by an insignificant amount: The Xbox Series S 512GB, is now $380, more than a 25 percent increase from $300. The Xbox Series X 1TB Digital is now $550, a 22 percent increase from $450. The Xbox Series S 1TB is now $430, a 22 percent increase from $350). The Xbox Series X 1TB with Blu-ray is now $600, a 20 percent increase from $500. The Xbox Series X 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition is now $730, a 22 percent increase from $600. The news doesn't end there. Controllers and headsets now start at $65 and top out at $200 for the "Full" Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. Games will also increase in price, though not right away: "Some of our new, first-party games will launch at $79.99 beginning this holiday season," Microsoft explains. That last one seems more about leaning in to Nintendo's ambitious Switch 2 game pricing, and less about any possible tariff impact (though it's worth noting Xbox prices are going up worldwide, not just in the US.) But not all is negative, as if you're in the market for a new console, prices at online retailers have yet to catch up. Before you whip out your credit card, remember some key caveats here. The current Xbox platform is effectively five years old, with the leaked mid-gen "Brooklin" refresh seemingly canceled. An all-new Xbox generation is also expected to arrive in the next few years, perhaps 2028, with leaks suggesting it may be a "cloud hybrid" machine. And more and more previous Xbox exclusives are beginning to pop up on the PS5, too. That said, if you've been waiting to buy an Xbox, now is the time, as these legacy prices could disappear any minute.
