Science is not meant for an individual or a nation, but for a global progress, said former ISRO Director Mylswamy Annadurai here on Sunday. He was speaking at the valedictory function of the two-day state level Young Astronomy and Space Science Congress - YASSC 2025 at Sri Kaliswari College here. Dr. Mylswamy, who had served as the Project Director of Chandrayaan-1 and Chandrayaan-2, Mangalyaan and among others inspired the participants with his motivational words on space exploration and scientific innovation. The nation's strength largely depends on scientific development. He emphasised that science would benefit the entire globe and not just an individual or a country. In the Global Innovation Index, India has advanced to the 39th position from its earlier rank of 81 which he greatly appreciated. He shared his personal journey of making every available opportunity as the key for his achievement. He stressed that the government and private institutions should support research and development, foster global opportunities in scientific research for children as in sports and work to enhance the technology readiness level. He appreciated the initiatives of Tamil Nadu Astronomy and Science Society (TASS) and expressed hope that they would be extended to other states in future. He said that in science there is no victory or failure, as every scientific endeavour is a process of learning. Out of 182 teams, 57 among them received special mention and were honoured with medals, while 100 participants were awarded certificates. Medals were also presented to evaluators, regional coordinators, and regional academic coordinators. The event marked another milestone with the release of the lunar eclipse poster, along with the launch of the newsletter of the state level YASSC 2025. Ariviyal Palagai coordinator Srikumar welcomed. Sri Kaliswari College secretary A. P. Selvarajan presided. The TASS general secretary I Manohar presented an overview of the YASSC. TASS president G. Ramesh, YASSC evaluation coordinator D. Khanna and others spoke. A total of 1252 students participated from across T.N. in six events including paper presentation, e-content development and astro-game creations. Secretary S. P. Sellakumar proposed a vote of thanks.

Madurai: India is making strides towards developing a fully indigenous fighter aircraft, said Dr Dillibabu Vijayakumar, senior scientist, DRDO , ministry of defence, while addressing the Youth Astronomy & Space Science Congress (YASSC) 2025 at Sivakasi in Virudhunagar on Saturday. The two-day event, hosted for the first time in Sivakasi by the Tamil Nadu Astronomy Science Society (TASS) at Sri Kaliswari College, drew over 350 students from across Tamil Nadu. Around 170 teams comprising about 500 students will present research papers during the congress. In his keynote, Dr Vijayakumar stressed the importance of indigenous research for nation-building and urged students to pursue science with focus and persistence to achieve both personal success and technological advancement for the nation. The inaugural session was attended by Dr Niruj Mohan Ramanujam, scientist, Indian Institute of astrophysics (IIA), Bangalore; Dr Chrisphin Karthick, scientist, IIA, Bangalore; G Ramesh, president, TASS; J Manohar, general secretary, TASS; Dr A T Ravichandran, president, Raman Research Foundation; and A P Selvarajan, secretary, Sri Kaliswari College. ISRO scientists encourage young achievers to focus on indigenous research

Emphasising the importance of indigenous research in nation building, DRDO senior scientist V. Dillibabu on Saturday urged the students to remain focused, which would enable them to achieve their goals. Speaking at the inaugural session of a two-day Youth Astronomy and Space Science Congress (YASSC) 2025 at Sri Kaliswari College here, he highlighted the country's strides towards developing fully indigenous fighter aircraft in the near future. The student community should adapt to changes and technological advancements happening in the globe. This would give twin benefit viz., for both personal success and for the nation. Hence, young achievers should be focused and persistent until they reached the set objectives, he said. For the first time, such a prestigious national-level congress was being organised under the auspices of Tamil Nadu Astronomy Science Society, an umbrella organisation of the district Astro club in the State, and such events should be held at periodic intervals as it would provide a platform to exchange views and enable in dissemination of knowledge, he added. Delivering the keynote address, Indian Institute of Astrophysics scientist Chrisphin Karthick commended the enthusiasm of young minds engaged in research projects and encouraged them to stay steadfast in their academic pursuits. The Congress not only provided a platform for the students to showcase their research, but also fostered scientific temper, aligning with India's vision of nurturing the next generation of scientists and innovators. Niruj Mohan Ramanujam offered felicitation. College secretary Selvarajan inspired the participants to follow the path of achievers with determination and confidence. More than 170 teams are taking part in the Congress. About 500 students are presenting research papers. Tamil Nadu Astronomy and Science Society president Ramesh, general secretary T. Manohar and Raman Research Foundation president Ravichandran were among other speakers.. The valedictory function would be addressed by former ISRO Director Myilsamy Annadurai on Sunday and other scientists.
