ISRO scientists encourage young achievers to focus on indigenous research
Speaking at the inaugural session of a two-day Youth Astronomy and Space Science Congress (YASSC) 2025 at Sri Kaliswari College here, he highlighted the country's strides towards developing fully indigenous fighter aircraft in the near future.
The student community should adapt to changes and technological advancements happening in the globe. This would give twin benefit viz., for both personal success and for the nation. Hence, young achievers should be focused and persistent until they reached the set objectives, he said.
For the first time, such a prestigious national-level congress was being organised under the auspices of Tamil Nadu Astronomy Science Society, an umbrella organisation of the district Astro club in the State, and such events should be held at periodic intervals as it would provide a platform to exchange views and enable in dissemination of knowledge, he added.
Delivering the keynote address, Indian Institute of Astrophysics scientist Chrisphin Karthick commended the enthusiasm of young minds engaged in research projects and encouraged them to stay steadfast in their academic pursuits. The Congress not only provided a platform for the students to showcase their research, but also fostered scientific temper, aligning with India's vision of nurturing the next generation of scientists and innovators.
Niruj Mohan Ramanujam offered felicitation. College secretary Selvarajan inspired the participants to follow the path of achievers with determination and confidence.
More than 170 teams are taking part in the Congress. About 500 students are presenting research papers.
Tamil Nadu Astronomy and Science Society president Ramesh, general secretary T. Manohar and Raman Research Foundation president Ravichandran were among other speakers..
The valedictory function would be addressed by former ISRO Director Myilsamy Annadurai on Sunday and other scientists.

Opposition meet to pick V-P candidate remains inconclusive, another round of parleys on August 19
The meeting of INDIA bloc leaders on Monday (August 18, 2025) at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's official residence to decide the Opposition candidate for the Vice-President's post remained inconclusive. 'A meeting of leaders of all Opposition parties in Parliament will be held at 12:30 PM tomorrow Tuesday Aug 19th at 10, Rajaji Marg,' Congress communications chief Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X. The Opposition bloc is likely to announce its choice on Tuesday (August 19, 2025). According to sources, the Congress president, who is also the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Rajya Sabha, was committed to fielding a candidate and not conceding without a contest. On Sunday night, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had reached out to the leaders of some Opposition parties, including Mr. Kharge for unanimously electing the new Vice-President. Sources said the Opposition wants to field a non-political face who has national standing and stature for the second-highest constitutional position in the country. The vice-presidential election, necessitated by the sudden resignation of incumbent Jagdeep Dhankhar last month, is scheduled for September 9. The last date for filing nominations is August 21. Though no name was finalised, several possible candidates were considered. According to sources, on DMK's suggestion, Indian scientist Mylswamy Annadurai, who during his tenure at ISRO worked on two of the major missions of ISRO, namely Chandrayaan-1 and Mangalyaan, was also discussed. The Trinamool Congress, however, was of the opinion that it would be 'reactive' to field another Tamilian in response to the NDA's vice-presidential candidate — Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan. Mr. Annadurai hails from the same Kongu region as Mr. Radhakrishnan. His scientific and apolitical background is an advantage. If a consensus on Mr. Annadurai's candidature emerges within the Opposition ranks and if he agrees to contest, it will help the DMK and its allies politically as they will not be seen as 'anti-Tamil' in opposing Mr Radhakrishnan. Another name that is said to have been discussed is Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, sources claimed. There were also some reservations among RJD and SP leaders about contesting the vice-presidential polls since the numbers are loaded in favour of the NDA. They argued that since the Opposition does not have the requisite numbers, it should let this election go in view of the upcoming Bihar polls, which they argued needs more attention. The SP also argued that the Opposition should focus its energy on its campaign against the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. When India earns respect, Congress feels the pain: Shivraj Singh Chouhan
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday lashed out at the Congress and other opposition parties over their uproar in the Lok Sabha. 'Why is it that whenever India's global standing rises, Congress seems to suffer discomfort?' he asked pointedly. The Lok Sabha was scheduled to hold a discussion on 'India's First Astronaut on the International Space Station: The Role of the Space Programme in Making India a Developed Nation by 2047'. However, the session was disrupted by heavy sloganeering and chaos led by the Congress and other opposition MPs. In a video message, Chouhan expressed deep disappointment and said, 'There are moments in a nation's journey that should transcend political divisions. Whenever India has experienced a moment of pride, the entire country has rejoiced — but Congress has cried foul, raised doubts.' He cited examples, including India's successful Chandrayaan mission landing on the Moon's South Pole, the surgical strikes by the Indian Army, and Operation Sindoor, saying that while the nation stood united in pride, Congress chose to question and criticise. 'Be it air strikes or our military's decisive operations, while the whole country applauds our forces, Congress keeps asking: 'But how much damage was done?' he said. Referring to India's scientific achievement during the COVID-19 pandemic, Chouhan said: 'Our scientists developed a vaccine, and under the Prime Minister's leadership, over 100 countries received it. Lives were saved. But Congress dismissed it as 'Modi's vaccine' and warned people against taking it.' Highlighting the recent space mission, Chouhan lauded Shubhanshu Shukla, India's astronaut who visited the International Space Station, calling him a symbol of national pride. 'At a time when the nation was ready to welcome him with open arms and Parliament was to discuss his historic achievement, Congress created chaos in the Well of the House. Shouldn't all parties, regardless of affiliation, have united to honour him?' He added, 'The world is looking at India with amazement as we progress and grow — was it too much to expect Congress to participate constructively in such a discussion?' Taking a sharp dig, Chouhan remarked, 'Why does Congress experience pain whenever India's global prestige grows? Their noise, protests, and doubts only serve to dishonour those who bring glory to the country. Is this what they call patriotism? The entire nation is watching — and Congress will have to answer.'
