Why Nate Tice calls Mason Graham a 'human hand grenade'

Yahoo Sports NFL analyst Nate Tice and NFL writer Charles McDonald break down what makes Michigan's Mason Graham such a special prospect and why they both have him as DT1. Hear the full conversation on 'Football 301' - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more Mason Graham from Michigan. He is number 7 on your big board, #8 on mine. Charles with Graham, maybe a little drop off from 2023 to 2024. I would say his 2023 tape was pretty much outright dominant. Well, 2024, some flashes, more than sustained play maybe, uh, about some injuries as well as just the felt like a post hardball hangover that people had in Michigan this year. But with Mason Graham, why is he 7 on your big board? Why is he considered probably defensive tackle one, not probably, is defensive tackle one in this class. Uh, he's he's a really special player. I, I think, and I think it's, uh, the movement skills are really what, what pop out on tape, um, because he's a strong guy, he can be stout, you know, when things are coming right at him, but like the ability to just kind of Like, like create space when, you know, create space in the phone booth, um, and be able to wiggle its way up the field and still be explosive through it. Like that to me is pretty rare stuff. Uh, even with like the, you know, the injury, what was it ankle injury that he was hampered with all season. I don't remember exactly. Yeah, even with that. You can still see a lot of the explosive ability, uh, just, just to be a difference maker. The nickname that came for Graham was the human hand grenade because he just detonates people on the impact and it kind of just, it's, he's explosive. I mean, his arm length isn't great and people are figuring out what his weight is, but I think his weight's plenty fine, even if he is up 300, I think his playstyle is not to be a beef guy, even though he is strong. It's not, you know, he can hold up against blocks and he does OK against double teams, you know, some double teams can move him like most defensive tackles. But the thing is, is that he is a big play generator for the defense, and not just passes, but against the run too. Um, and he does it in different ways. So it's sometimes he's knifing in there and beating you with speed and bend, sometimes it's power and you just can, the knockback, um, sometimes just effort beating double teams. So it's kind of, he shows everything. And I'll probably bump him like one or two spots. He'll probably end up maybe being a top 5 player for me overall. Uh, it's just that there's a couple of blemishes I have with him that I mentioned, just some of the length and some of the other stuff. It's like, is he a 10 sack guy guaranteed just we're going to call it that. Not sure, but I know he's going to impact the game. Um, I think there's a lot of Geno Atkins to him. Uh, that's the guy I kind of came back to when I watch. Yeah, that's kind of who really he reminds me of just that, just a little ball of power. Close

Is Oregon DT Derrick Harmon a 'certified first round' pick?

Yahoo Sports NFL analyst Nate Tice and NFL writer Charles McDonald praise the strengths of Oregon DT Derrick Harmon, citing his versatility. Hear the full conversation on 'Football 301' - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more I'll start with Harman. I like him. I think he just does stuff. He, he can line up across the defensive line. I believe he is going to be a defensive tackle, a true 3 technique, deep type defensive tackle, but you can move him on the inside on, on rushdowns, you know, more inside, I should say. You can put him on the outside. He's really good on twists and games. He keeps his feet. I think, uh, again, I'm not particularly a 10 sack guy, but this is a guy to contribute pressures and some sacks and get you a handful of sacks, but I also think he's really good against the run. Um, the guy that I ended up comparing him to. I actually feel really good about this as time has gone on. This is this high upside, so no one slip my throat for saying this, is, uh, Akeem Hicks, um, the old Bears defensive tackle, where I just think that his good play against the run while doing, contributing against the pass, you know, I think he could project to a two-gap defense where he has to hold up against his blocks, a gap shooting defense where he has to get up field. Um, I think he's really good. I already mentioned this, but the twists and slants and all those games and everything. I, I just really like Harman. I, I, this, this just think his skill set translates. Like he just does a lot of things. He gets the big explosive plays like TFLs and sacks, but also just does the in-between stuff, um, where he's not out of position and he's actually just contributing, holding his gap, doing his role real well. Uh, I, I just, I, I think he's a high floor player with some ceiling to tap into, and I think he tested quite well. So if you can't tell, I really like Derek Harman from Oregon, but Charles, you have him at 21. Thoughts as well, or maybe some negatives if maybe throw some cold water on on maybe maybe my uh uh very, very high praise of Harbin. Well, no, I, I, I see the reason why I was just thinking to myself I gotta move a little higher is because I kind of agree with all that. I don't, I don't know, I don't, I don't, I don't really have any negatives. I, I, I guess maybe the negative is. Like he's not I don't, he's not like a Mason Graham level athlete, but more than good enough to hold his own. And I think even to be productive pass rush in the NFL. So, uh, well rounded guy, like high floor, high ceiling. I, I, I, I, I don't really know why more people aren't talking about him. Maybe that's just me not consuming as much draft stuff as I should be, but this is, this is a guy who I think is a certified first round defensive tackle. Um, plays for a long time and helps you win against the run in the past. Like he's a bigger like a heavy handed guy, but he moves well. He's got some pass rush moves, he's got some juice. I don't really see too many holes in this game that would make you afraid of taking him in the top 20 or maybe even a little higher than that. Yeah. Yeah, I, I feel like it's safe. Like I, like I said, I have 14, but I, top 20 it feels like this player all the way. I, I, I just think he, he's just one of these guys that's scheme proof to me. Like it's just like, no matter what you're gonna ask him to do, he's going to be able to contribute to what you're doing. So I just like players like that. Close

Could Kaleb Johnson be this draft class' Todd Gurley?

Yahoo Sports NFL analyst Nate Tice and PFF's lead draft analyst Trevor Sikkema discuss the strengths and weaknesses of former Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson and give some potential team fits. Hear the full conversation on 'Football 301' - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more Caleb Johnson is like science guy meme hands up, like, I don't know what to do with you here, um, because this breakdown Cale Johnson because he's he's a unique watch. Yeah. So there are plays of Caleb Johnson and and a handful of plays. I'm not just talking about a couple where I go. That's Todd Gurley. Like, that's like, that's, that's today's version of Todd Gurley, like who he is as a runner. Um, I love him in outside zone. I love when you can get him towards the sideline and he could just put his foot in the ground and just take off up the field. I think for being 6'1, 225 pounds, the long speed that he has, the top speed when he gets up to it, ton of speed to power that he converts there with his momentum, can really get up the field and hit those home runs for you. I thought where there were good plays, he was inconsistent when it came to those 3rd down abilities. So like, pass catching and pass protecting. Not that he can't do it. Obviously, he's built like somebody who I felt as though could be a nice 3rd down player, but I didn't think that he was consistent in either of those areas. And then there were times when I just didn't love his vision between the tackles in those man and gap scheme run blocking concepts. So if you tell me that like, If you put Caleb Johnson. With the Minnesota Vikings, the San Francisco 49ers, like teams like that, where, where you were just able to get to the outside and run outside zone a lot, like, I mean, like he would be a 1000 yard back for you, even as a rookie. But I don't think One thing that we're doing at PFF this year, which I'm super excited about is we're getting into more like team-centric big boards. So we're gonna release team like top 100s, like for every team, like given what they need, given their styles, like all these kinds of stuff. And Caleb Johnson to me is gonna be one that's gonna have a ton of different range, cause for some teams, I might go, I don't love him behind that blocking concept that they're trying to run. And in other concepts, I might go, this dude's gonna be a 1000 yard runner if they draft him as a rookie. So, To me, there were just too many areas of his game where I felt like it was inconsistent, specifically in the 3rd down, like, pass. Uh, what do I say, like, like past game pluses. I just felt as though he was a little bit lack in that regard, but like as a runner, like I said, there are times when I watch him and I go, this is Todd Gurley again. So there's just, it's, I, I'm very indifferent about where I'm gonna end up on Caleb Johnson. Yeah, he, I have him and Judkins right next to each other, um, that's kind of like running back 34, and I'm totally with you is that. He grew on me. He was a guy that I actually was lower on the most, and then he kind of grew on me and I feel like I'm gonna stay right here in this range where I have the overall like mid-40s kind of overall my big board somewhere around there. Um, there's some Aarian Foster there, and I think maybe it's just some zone, zone zone, but they're the same size, they kind of have the same speed. That's the guy that I keep watching, that's the upside that you're hoping for. But again, where A Foster go on the draft rafted. And that, that, you know, do you take that skill set on day two? Like, you know, and again, that's kind of going with the result of Aaron Foster was, but again, just saying some of the limitations. He's a classic early down only back. I like this guy to take the majority share of touches, but then you need somebody else on your team to balance them out, to help him out, to do some of the dirty work stuff to be the classic scap back protection back. If I could get. Shoot, if I can get Johnson and Traveon Henderson on the same team, we're gold. Let's get these two like we're awesome. Close
