Fencing, signage revamp to help protect Yamuna floodplain: DDA

New Delhi: Delhi Development Authority (DDA) will restore and renovate Yamuna signage boards from Wazirabad Barrage to NH-24 on both banks of the river. Officials indicated the initiative aims to clearly mark the floodplain surrounding the northern ridge. The DDA is also implementing a steel fencing project covering 11km of the Yamuna floodplain from Wazirabad Barrage to ITO Barrage to safeguard the environmentally critical zone from unauthorised occupation. The selected contractor is expected to complete the Rs 18 crore project within four months. This action is part of a comprehensive strategy to preserve and safeguard the floodplain. In April, DDA reported to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) about recovering 24 acres of occupied land under the Yamuna Vanasthali project between Jan and April. The initiative will secure restored floodplain areas like Yamuna Vatika, Asita and other vacant patches on both eastern and western banks. A tender has been floated for this, the authority said. The developments comprise Asita East and West and Kalindi Aviral, encompassing Baansera Park, Vasudev Ghat, Amrut Biodiversity Park and Yamuna Vatika near Rajghat, spanning 740 hectares in total. The current Yamuna Vanasthali initiative — a floodplain restoration project on the eastern bank — extends from Wazirabad Barrage to Sarai Kale Khan ISBT Bridge, covering 236.5 hectares. The DDA intends to create connections between all existing and future parks situated along the Yamuna floodplain.

DDA to build steel fence along Yamuna floodplain to prevent encroachment

New Delhi, Jul 21 (PTI) The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) will install a steel fence along an 11-kilometre stretch of the Yamuna floodplain from Wazirabad barrage to ITO barrage, in a bid to protect the ecologically sensitive area from encroachment, officials said on Monday. The project, estimated to cost Rs 18 crore, will be executed within four months by the selected contractor. This initiative comes as part of a broader effort to reclaim and protect the river's floodplain. In April this year, the DDA informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that it had recovered 24 acres of encroached land under the Yamuna Vanasthali project between January and April. 'The fencing will secure restored areas like Yamuna Vatika, Asita, and other vacant patches on both eastern and western banks. A tender has been floated for this," a DDA official said. Over the past two years, several recreational spaces have come up on the Yamuna floodplain, which includes parks and cafes, all developed by DDA along the 22-km stretch of the river starting from Wazirabad barrage and ending at Okhla barrage. The projects are Asita East and West and Kalindi Aviral, which include the Baansera Park, Vasudev Ghat, Amrut Biodiversity Park and Yamuna Vatika near Rajghat, covering a combined area of 740 hectares. The ongoing Yamuna Vanasthali plan is one of the Yamuna floodplain restoration projects on the eastern bank, stretching from the Wazirabad Barrage to the Sarai Kale Khan ISBT Bridge, spread over an area of 236.5 hectares. The DDA also plans to interconnect all its existing and upcoming parks along the Yamuna floodplain. Delhi govt sets November deadline to clear Yamuna floodplains of encroachments

The Delhi government has directed agencies to remove all encroachments from the Yamuna floodplains by November, as part of a 45‑point action plan for cleaning and rejuvenation of the river, officials said on Saturday. Yamuna cleanup is a flagship commitment of the BJP government. In its first budget, the government allocated ₹9,000 crore to the water and sewerage sector, officials noted. The Yamuna traverses 52 km through Delhi; the 22 km stretch between Wazirabad and Okhla is the most polluted and remains the primary focus of planning and policy efforts. Coordinated effort under chief minister's plan Chief Minister Rekha Gupta approved the action plan, which was discussed in a recent meeting chaired by the chief secretary. Key agencies involved include Delhi Jal Board (DJB), Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department, and Delhi Development Authority (DDA), officials added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Würzburg: GEERS sucht 700 Testhörer für Hörgeräte ohne Zuzahlung GEERS Undo DDA to remove floodplain encroachments Under the plan, the DDA has been instructed to clear all encroachments—including illegal nurseries, unauthorised structures, waste dumping, squatters, and farming—along Yamuna floodplains in east, northeast, and south Delhi by November. Officials noted that anti-encroachment drives often face resistance due to lack of formal demarcation of floodplain zones. A DDA survey last year claimed that nearly two‑thirds of these floodplain areas had been encroached in recent years. Past achievements and ongoing duties In recent years, the DDA has reclaimed 224 acres of floodplain land and developed public green spaces such as Asita in East Delhi. In April, it told the National Green Tribunal that 24 acres were freed from encroachment under the Yamuna Vanasthali project between Wazirabad Barrage and ISBT Kashmere Gate . Live Events Drain encroachments to be cleared The action plan also targets encroachments in drains feeding into the Yamuna. The MCD, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), and DDA are tasked with clearing stormwater drain encroachments, while MCD and I&FC departments will address encroachments along drain alignments. Comprehensive project consolidation Projects related to Yamuna rejuvenation have been grouped under ten working heads, including drains, sewage, solid waste management, enhancement of ecological flow, and stricter enforcement, each with specific deadlines.

DDA flags over 500 hectares of encroachment in Yamuna floodplain, plans crackdown

New Delhi: Delhi Development Authority (DDA) informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that over 500 hectares of its Khasra land in Zone-O has been built upon, with around 25 hectares falling within the Yamuna River's one-in-25-year active floodplain. The DDA said it is working to accelerate the removal of encroachments and demarcate the one-in-100-year floodplain. In a preliminary tabletop analysis, the Khasra data from Geospatial Delhi Ltd (GSDL) was overlaid to identify DDA land falling within Zone-O and the 1:25-year floodplain. Built-up areas were then marked on this land—about 562 hectares in Zone-O and around 25 hectares within the floodplain, the DDA stated in its April 29 report to the NGT. You Can Also Check: Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi The report said the DDA would soon conduct a field survey to verify the nature of these built-up areas on DDA Khasras falling in the 'O'-zone, and necessary actions will be taken. It added that the agency had recently reclaimed encroached land, including 24 acres within the Yamuna Vanasthali project. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Container Houses Vietnam (Take A Look At The Prices) Container House Search Now Undo The tribunal had in Oct 2023 set up a high-level committee led by Delhi's chief secretary to inspect and draft an action plan to conserve Zone O-II of the Yamuna floodplain . This followed the NGT's suo motu response to a TOI report titled 'Why flooding has forced DDA's master plan rethink', published in Aug 2023, and asked the committee to chalk out a plan on how the encroachment could be removed from the zone. That report highlighted how the Yamuna's water level reached a record 208.6 metres during the monsoon, flooding low-lying areas such as Raj Ghat and ITO. As per the DDA's Master Plan 2041, the O zone is split into two parts—Zone O-I, which is highly encroached and forms 35% of the total floodplain, and Zone O-II. The O zone, one of about 15 delineated zones, includes riverfront areas and ecologically sensitive floodplain that are officially no-construction zones but remain heavily encroached. While TOI reported that officials might regulate encroachments in O-I and adopt a zero-tolerance stance in O-II, experts expressed scepticism. "Dividing the O zone may not address the core problem," experts noted, warning that the actual floodplain is far broader than the 10,000 hectares classified under the 'O Zone'. A comprehensive study, they said, is needed to mitigate future flood impacts.
