Misleading public on Anwar's pardon ‘inappropriate', AGC tells Dr M
Anwar Ibrahim in May 2018 after he was released from jail on a royal pardon from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Muhammad V, through the Federal Territories Pardons Board. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) has reminded former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad that he attended the Federal Territories Pardons Board (FTPB) meeting that decided that Anwar Ibrahim should be granted a royal pardon. In a video, which has gone viral, Mahathir claimed that the royal pardon granted to Anwar in May 2018 was invalid as it was not discussed by the FTPB. In response, the AGC today said the FTPB met at Istana Negara on May 16, 2018. The meeting was chaired by the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V, it added. '(The meeting) was attended, among others, by Mahathir himself in his capacity as the prime minister at the time,' said the AGC. Screenshots from a video in which Dr Mahathir Mohamad claimed that Anwar Ibrahim's royal pardon in May 2018 was invalid as it was not discussed by the Federal Territories Pardons Board. 'Based on the board's advice, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong consented to grant a full royal pardon to Anwar, which took immediate effect from the date of the meeting. 'Any public statements that can mislead the public regarding the FTPB's decisions are wholly inappropriate.' The AGC also said it took a serious view of the matter as it concerned constitutional and institutional integrity. Anwar, who is now the prime minister, received a full royal pardon a week after Pakatan Harapan won power in the 2018 general election. He was freed after serving three years of his five-year jail term on a sodomy conviction. The FTPB is chaired by the king and includes the attorney-general, the federal territories minister and three others appointed by the king.

Honorific titles not for sale or lobbying, says Agong
Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim said only those who have served a long time in the government or brought pride to the country deserve to be conferred honours. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim has reminded that federal honours cannot be bought or lobbied for, saying that these awards are reserved only for those who have truly served the nation. Delivering his royal address at the investiture ceremony at Istana Negara in conjunction with his official birthday today, the king said that he personally vets every nominee, even though the government has provided guidelines, Bernama reported. 'In my view, only those who have served a long time in the government or brought pride to the country deserve to be conferred honours. Not many pass this benchmark every year,' he was quoted as saying. 'Even though people are lobbying for titles, I will not entertain them. Titles like 'Datuk' or 'Tan Sri' are not for sale. If one has so much money, they should do charity and help the poor instead.' Sultan Ibrahim also urged today's 104 recipients to treasure and take pride in the honours they have received. The king also took the opportunity to remind leaders at all levels not to play politics with sensitive issues or stir division, warning that an excess of political parties and internal factions only fuels disunity and hostilities. 'Use your head before making any decision. There is no greater gift for me than a united people,' he said. 'I once said that a virus would hit this country, and now we can see it spreading, (it seems) incurable. I keep repeating this warning because we must not forget.' He also announced plans for a Kembara Diraja tour across the federal territories to better understand people's lives and distribute zakat aid to the underprivileged and eligible recipients.

China's Xi hails Malaysia visit as ‘great success', says Mohamad Hasan
KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 — Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed satisfaction and happiness on his state visit to Malaysia last month. He also described the visit as a great success, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. According to Mohamad, the feedback was conveyed to him recently by China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 'Congratulations to everyone,' he said when speaking at the closing ceremony of the Asean-Malaysia 2025 Chairmanship Security Exercise at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) today. Xi's three-day state visit, at the invitation of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim last month, marked his second official trip to Malaysia in 12 years, following his previous visit in 2013. During the visit, Xi was accorded a state welcome at Istana Negara and was also hosted to an official dinner by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at Seri Perdana in Putrajaya. The visit saw the exchange of 31 agreement documents to strengthen cooperation, marking a new chapter in bilateral relations between the two countries. In a separate development, Mohamad said today's Cabinet meeting also discussed a proposal to establish an international-standard conference centre in Bandar Malaysia. He said the proposal was raised as Malaysia may be hosting multiple high-level international events over the next five years, and the KLCC facility, given its age, should be assessed for its ongoing suitability and security readiness. He added that Malaysia is also bidding to host meetings of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), and the Commonwealth. — Bernama
