Aidan O'Brien pulls ‘amazing' horse from £1.2million Juddmonte after odds collapse in ‘surprising and rapid' market move

AIDAN O'BRIEN has pulled 'amazing' filly Whirl from the £1.25million Juddmonte International - after her odds collapsed in a head-scratching market move. The Ballydoyle boss' long-time ante-post fav Delacroix was a worrying drifter in the markets on Sunday afternoon. 1 It looked like long-time Juddmonte ante-post fav Delacroix was going to be pulled from the race after his odds drifted as stablemate Whirl's collapsed - but Aidan O'Brien declared the former and pulled the latter in a head-scratching market move Credit: Alamy He went all the way out to 6-1 - and 13-1 on the Betfair Exchange - having been 7-4 as his stablemate was hammered into 4-1 from 16s. Advertisement The writing looked on the wall for the Coral-Eclipse winner as punters gave up hope of a rematch with John & Thady Gosden's Ombudsman. But just as it looked like the field was set, O'Brien declared Delacroix and left dual Group1 winner Whirl out of the York Ebor festival feature. The massive upheavel in the markets meant some cashed out bets on Delacroix believing he would be a non-runner. While those who followed the gamble on Whirl were left with 'burned fingers' after she wasn't declared. Advertisement Coral couldn't split the two leaders after declarations, having Delacroix and Ombudsman both 15-8. The firm's David Stevens said: "Ombudsman had claimed outright favouritism for the race over the weekend, but with his Coral-Eclipse conqueror, Delacroix, the only Ballydoyle challenger declared for the race, the younger colt has rejoined his older rival at the head of the market." O'Brien also failed to declared dual Derby hero Lambourn, instead leaving him to face six rivals - and three stablemates - in the Group 2 Great Voltigeur, also on Wednesday. A total of six were declared for the Juddmonte, which is routinely ranked one of, if not the best, race in the world. Templegate's tips: ‘Impressive' 33-1 York Ebor outsider screams value plus 14-1 and 10-1 ante-post picks

It's one of the best festivals all year YOR WELCOME Templegate's tips: 'Impressive' 33-1 York Ebor outsider screams value plus 14-1 and 10-1 ante-post picks Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) TEMPLEGATE has been in cracking form this season and can't wait to get stuck into the awesome four-day Ebor Festival at York. Here, he picks out three ante-post punts he's more than happy to back now in the hope of hoovering up maximum value. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Paddy Twomey does exceptionally well with the ammo he has and Templegate likes one of his Ebor runners at an each-way price Credit: Sportsfile The racing, which will be shown live on ITV1, kicks off on Wednesday with the blockbuster Juddmonte International - where we have a surprise runner supplemented for £85,000. And the big race of the week is Saturday's Ebor handicap - which is where our man's first pick runs… Templegate's York Ebor ante-post tips EBOR (Sat) Trainer Paddy Twomey has done us a couple of favours already this season (Carmers was a lovely Royal Ascot winner for us) and looks to have a solid each-way chance with LA ISLA MUJERES in the Ebor. This Lope De Vega mare is number 18 in the entries so will get a run and has been operating in Listed and Group races with some success since leaving Ralph Beckett's yard in 2024 to cross the Irish Sea. She was an impressive Roscommon winner this time last year and looked in good nick when coming back from eight months off for a close-up second at Down Royal last time. She saw out two miles there but has more than enough pace for this shorter trip where stamina is always an asset anyway. She's hovering around the 33-1 mark which looks too big for a mare that still has potential to improve at the age of five and Twomey is an excellent target trainer. She has some more fancy entries like the Irish St Leger later this season so must be showing plenty at home. They will all have to shift to beat last year's unlucky fifth Hipop De Loire who is 7-2 favourite for Willie Mullins but my hope has plenty going for her each-way. NUNTHORPE (Fri) JM JUNGLE looks a very fair 14-1 for the Nunthorpe on the back of his excellent victory in the Group 2 King George at Glorious Goodwood. This was a clear career best for John and Sean Quinn's five-year-old who enjoyed the quick ground and hit the line really strongly despite winning by only a neck. It's no secret that the current sprinting division is full of horses that are more slow boat than Usain Bolt and the Nunthorpe looks ripe for an upset. JM Jungle's last five visits to York have produced a big handicap win and four places in hot company, all over this trip. There's every chance he'll keep that good run going. JUDDMONTE INTERNATIONAL (Wed) FRENCH raider DARYZ is an interesting contender and looks a big price at 10-1 in a couple of places, with some bookies offering just 7s. This exciting son of Sea The Stars has yet to taste defeat in four outings and took the step up into Group 2 company in his stride at St Cloud last time. Although he's won with some juice in the ground, connections are adamant he wants a quick surface and that's likely to be served up at York. Francis-Henri Grafford knows what he's doing with a talented horse and this improving three-year-old gets weight from his older rivals and can be backed now with three places still on offer. Connections have confirmed him as a planned runner and he could be facing less than the current eight rivals on the day. ‘He needs to be backed wherever he runs' – Templegate's three top tips for the big summer races

Send shivers down the bookies' spines with some ante-post liabilities TASTY TRIO 'He needs to be backed wherever he runs' – Templegate's three top tips for the big summer races Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) NOW the dust has settled on Royal Ascot we can turn our attention to a whole load of big races coming up this summer. With Newmarket's July Festival, Glorious Goodwood and the York Ebor quickly approaching, now is the time to strike in the ante-post markets. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Almaqam saw his form boosted massively when Ombudsman, seen here trailing behind in second in the Brigadier Gerard, bolted up in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes Credit: Getty Here, I take aim at three of the bigger contests and reveal my thinking behind the selections. Coral-Eclipse (July 5) The Coral-Eclipse is bubbling up to be a cracker with Ombudsman putting himself firmly in the picture by winning the Prince Of Wales's Stakes at the Royal meeting. He showed a sharp turn of foot once getting a clear run and he won without too much trouble. The bookies may have overreacted a little by making him 7-4 favourite for the Eclipse. After all, second home Anmaat doesn't seem the greatest in a battle. At current prices, ALMAQAM looks a better bet. He had no trouble in dealing with Ombudsman when they met in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown in late May. The latter clearly improved for that run but Ed Walker's colt seemed to have a lot left in the tank. His liking for a little bit of cut in the ground is a slight worry but his liking for the track is a plus and the British summer could easily deliver a deluge or two which would make the current 10-1 very tempting indeed. Of course if Field Of Gold turns up they are all probably playing for a place. July Cup (July 12) I hope connections of MORE THUNDER stick their neck out and supplement their speedster for the July Cup as he'd have a massive chance. He's not in the betting at the moment but his performance in just missing out in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot last week was blistering. He clocked one of the biggest speed figures I have ever seen for the final half of the race after he took a little while to get going. He is 100 per cent a Group horse and looks like he could well be a Group 1 horse at that. William Haggas' flyer needs to be backed wherever he turns up next. If he stays in handicaps and takes up his entry at the BUNBURY CUP at Newmarket on July 12 he deserves to be closer to 2-1 than the general 4s that's kicking about now. York Ebor (August 23) I would love to see FRENCH DUKE turn up in the Ebor at York after his solid comeback run in the Duke Of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot last week. He was very well backed into 4-1 but got caught up in traffic and didn't have enough time to get into the race coming around the final bend. I think stepping up a quarter of a mile in the Ebor would be the perfect race for him with this under his belt. He's had just seven starts and shapes like a real stayer who could see his handicap mark of 99 come down a little after this run. There are lots of other options and I'll be looking out for him wherever he goes – but I hope it's to the Knavesmire on August 23. He could go off at a big price and run very well indeed.
