‘He needs to be backed wherever he runs' – Templegate's three top tips for the big summer races

The Irish Sun24-06-2025
NOW the dust has settled on Royal Ascot we can turn our attention to a whole load of big races coming up this summer.
With Newmarket's July Festival, Glorious Goodwood and the York Ebor quickly approaching, now is the time to strike in the ante-post markets.

Almaqam saw his form boosted massively when Ombudsman, seen here trailing behind in second in the Brigadier Gerard, bolted up in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes

Here, I take aim at three of the bigger contests and reveal my thinking behind the selections.
Coral-Eclipse (July 5)
The Coral-Eclipse is bubbling up to be a cracker with Ombudsman putting himself firmly in the picture by winning the Prince Of Wales's Stakes at the Royal meeting.
He showed a sharp turn of foot once getting a clear run and he won without too much trouble.
The bookies may have overreacted a little by making him 7-4 favourite for the Eclipse.
After all, second home Anmaat doesn't seem the greatest in a battle.
At current prices,
ALMAQAM
looks a better bet.
He had no trouble in dealing with Ombudsman when they met in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown in late May.
Most read in Horse Racing
The latter clearly improved for that run but Ed Walker's colt seemed to have a lot left in the tank.
His liking for a little bit of cut in the ground is a slight worry but his liking for the track is a plus and the British summer could easily deliver a deluge or two which would make the current 10-1 very tempting indeed.
Of course if Field Of Gold turns up they are all probably playing for a place.
July Cup (July 12)
I hope connections of
MORE THUNDER
stick their neck out and supplement their speedster for the July Cup as he'd have a massive chance.
He's not in the betting at the moment but his performance in just missing out in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot last week was blistering.
He clocked one of the biggest speed figures I have ever seen for the final half of the race after he took a little while to get going.
He is 100 per cent a Group horse and looks like he could well be a Group 1 horse at that.
William Haggas' flyer needs to be backed wherever he turns up next.
If he stays in handicaps and takes up his entry at the BUNBURY CUP at Newmarket on July 12 he deserves to be closer to 2-1 than the general 4s that's kicking about now.
York Ebor (August 23)
I would love to see
FRENCH DUKE
turn up in the Ebor at York after his solid comeback run in the Duke Of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot last week.
He was very well backed into 4-1 but got caught up in traffic and didn't have enough time to get into the race coming around the final bend.
I think stepping up a quarter of a mile in the Ebor would be the perfect race for him with this under his belt.
He's had just seven starts and shapes like a real stayer who could see his handicap mark of 99 come down a little after this run.
There are lots of other options and I'll be looking out for him wherever he goes – but I hope it's to the Knavesmire on August 23.
He could go off at a big price and run very well indeed.

‘I got scared when I Googled it' – Former world darts champion Michael Smith fears he needs major surgery

He will be able to continue playing before the potential operation DARTS WORRY 'I got scared when I Googled it' – Former world darts champion Michael Smith fears he needs major surgery WALKING WOUNDED Michael Smith reckons he will need a new shoulder when he finishes throwing darts because his body is 'literally packing up'. The St Helens darts star – who has slumped to 21 spot in the world rankings – is in constant pain and a fortnight ago, he was told by medics he has severe osteoarthritis in his shoulder. 2 Michael Smith may need shoulder replacement surgery Credit: Getty Smith, 34, earned the title of World Champion back in 2023 after beating Michael van Gerwen in the final. Advertisement Since then, he has struggled to stay at the top of the darts world due to the emergence of Luke Humphries and Luke Littler. However, the former champ is set to continue his career with the help of injections. Due to his condition, he will be left potentially needing surgery after he retires from darts. When the father-of-two went online for more information and googled the condition, he admits he got 'scared' by the diagnosis and the long-term implications. Advertisement Bully Boy could ultimately require a shoulder replacement by the time he is in his mid-forties. Separate from these challenges, he has struggled to walk properly on his left foot – he has taken antibiotics and painkillers to curb the agony – and a course of steroids might be on the agenda. He told Online Darts: "I went on holiday, so it was the third one I missed. "I got my MRI back for my shoulder. I've got severe osteoarthritis or something like that—I can't even say it properly. Advertisement "The next step now is injections for my shoulder and wrist. Moment Michael Smith BREAKS dartboard in anger as he issues public apology "Worst case is a shoulder replacement, which isn't great, but that would only be when I retire. For now, it's injections. "A new shoulder would be like learning to play again. I got scared when I Googled it. "I just heard arthritis, but then all the stuff before it scared me. "They mentioned cortisone for my wrist, PRP which I need too, and then shoulder replacement where they cut your rotator cuff. Advertisement 2 He will continue playing on with injections Credit: Getty "That's where I panicked. But the operation won't be until I retire anyway—45, 46 maybe. For now, I'll just deal with it. Smith does not currently have a next match scheduled. He recently missed out on qualification to the World Matchplay for the first time since 2013. His last time at the oche ended in defeat as he was beaten in the first round of the Players Championship 21 by Polish ace Krzysztof Ratajski. Advertisement When Smith won the world title after years of heartbreak – he beat Michael van Gerwen 7-4 in the final and hit a nine-darter – he celebrated throughout the following season, and even had a wild holiday in Las Vegas with his wife. However, his second-round defeat in December 2024 to Dutchman Kevin Doets meant he dropped £485,000 off his rankings, denying him a spot in some TV events. Smith has essentially written off the rest of this year in terms of performances but he is determined to return to form at the PDC World Darts Championship – where there is £1million on the line for the winner. On September 20, he will undergo eye laser surgery, which will mean skipping some European Tour events. He added: "This is not going to stop me. I'll be back. I don't know anything else but to play darts and to fight. Advertisement "I'm a Manchester United fan. Like them, I'm a sleeping giant. I will wake up one day. "At home, when I'm practising, I'm in a good place. I feel right. Then I go to Pro Tours and just one bad game, in your head, it just goes back to square one. "My main issue now is getting everything right for December. Listen, if I win five games in the Worlds, I'm back in the top ten, it's like 200 grand. "Everyone will forget my year then. If I want to win it, which I know I've done before – I've been in the final three times – I could be back in the top three or top four. Never say never. "For me, I know I'll be back up there. It's the idiocy of when you see people's comments online. Advertisement "I managed my schedule poorly when I became World Champion. I didn't do the full year as much as I should. "I just concentrated more on TV. It bit me in the a*** for the next two years."

Inside Andy Murray's life after retirement with new jobs, potato gig and fresh addition to family with wife Kim

HAVING won three Grand Slams, £48million in career prize money and undergoing hip surgery, Andy Murray would be forgiven for wanting to put his feet up in retirement. But instead the tennis icon has been coaching, venturing into business and welcoming a new member of the family with his wife Kim. 4 Andy Murray has struck a deal with a potato brand 4 He has welcomed a new dog to the family Credit: andymurray/Instagram 4 The tennis icon has taken to the stage for his own live shows Credit: Getty Murray hung up his racket at the Paris Olympics last summer in an emotional farewell. It has been just over a year since he last stepped onto a court and he revealed he is not missing playing. Dad-of-four Murray admitted to "feeling guilty" about the time he spent away from his kids as a player. But it did not stop him taking the chance to coach Novak Djokovic for six months before splitting. "It was a chance to learn from one of the best athletes of all time. "I would do it [coaching] again at some stage. I don't think that will happen immediately," Instead Murray has moved into the business world, becoming a partner of Redrice Ventures where he leads a group of athlete advisers to help find investment opportunities. Andy Murray starts new career as agony aunt as he reveals details of 'terrible' first date with wife Kim But in one of his more bizarre business deals, Murray struck an agreement with potato brand Albert Bartlett to promote their products. They are based in Scotland and are a long-term supplier to the Cromlix Hotel. A statement on the partnership said it brings "two Scottish-born British icons with shared community vision and family values [together].' It added that the two-time Wimbledon champion will be "encouraging the nation to enjoy a healthy lifestyle through sport and a balanced diet'. Murray said: "I was lucky during my early playing days to have access to the kit and facilities required to play and develop, and as my career progressed, to have the best diet and training advice available. "I am excited to partner with Albert Bartlett to showcase the importance of a balanced diet and an active lifestyle to communities across the UK. "I hope the project inspires people to play and enjoy sport throughout their lives, at whatever level they are able." Away from business, Murray has welcomed a new member to the family in the shape of a flat-coated retriever dog. It comes after his border terriers Rusty and Maggie May died. And instead of entertaining on the tennis court, Murray has gone on tour with his own live show. And he is now focusing on golf, recently playing with Carlos Alcaraz while he was at Wimbledon.

Fofana, 24, has since removed all references to Chelsea from his Instagram account - an action he also took when he wanted to leave Leicester in 2022. At the time he cryptically posted a message in French to his Insta story. It read: "My father told me you're going to annoy a lot of people when you start doing what's best for you and I've begun to realise it." And when asked if Fofana could perform the role, his manager said last week: "Wes played 45 minutes in that position. "It was the first half against Bournemouth away. Probably one of the worst halves since we started." Chelsea spent £70million on Fofana in the summer of 2022. The luckless defender has since managed just 34 appearances for the Blues due to injury - so far working out at more than £2m per outing. 5 Last summer, Fofana criticised team-mate Enzo Fernandez for singing a derogatory song about France's black players in a video posted to the Argentine's Instagram. Advertisement In a since deleted post, the defender accused Fernandez of "uninhibited racism". Fofana went on to forgive his team-mate following an apology, telling reporters: "I trust him because I know him. "I know he is not racist. The act… I felt a little bit upset. But now, it is done. It is finished. "I hope this has educated him a bit, because for sure, it is a different culture. We need to educate about this because cultures are different, a lot of countries." 5 Advertisement TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW
