YouTube Launches ‘Effects Maker' for Shorts, New Comment COntrols

This story was originally published on Social Media Today. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Social Media Today newsletter. YouTube is rolling out a new 'Effect Maker' option, that'll enable creators to build their own effects for Shorts clips, while it's also adding some additional comment controls, and improved tagging for brand collaborations. First off, YouTube is giving more creators access to its new 'Effects Maker' option, which enables creators to create, publish, and manage effects for YouTube Shorts. So kind of similar to Snapchat's Lens Sudio, Effects Maker will give creators the tools to create engaging effects for use in Shorts clips, which could help to spark more engagement and interest. YouTube has been experimenting with Effects Maker for the past year, adding in more options to facilitate expanded creative expression with these experiences. And now, more creators will get access, with all users that are able to access YouTube's advanced features now able to also try out the tool. As per YouTube: '[Effects Maker] is only available on desktop for now, and we don't have specifics on expansion to mobile, but we'll keep you posted. When you publish an effect, it will be available to all users that are eligible to create shorts.' Creators will also be able to showcase their effects on their Channel, while YouTube is also testing new generative AI elements to further enhance your creative options. So a lot more creative effects could be coming to YouTube Shorts, providing even more considerations for your content, and for boosting awareness of your channel. On another front, YouTube's also adding in more comment control options, including bulk comment controls in YouTube Studio. 'Up until now, creators could only select a limited number of comments to action on at one time. Now, we're adding the ability for creators to select all comments and take action, like 'remove' or 'report.'' That'll help to streamline your channel management, while YouTube's also adding an option to limit comments to subscribers only. The combination of comment management options could help to keep your channel comments civil, while also giving your subscribers more focus. YouTube says that the capacity to adjust who can comment is only available at the individual video level at this stage, but it is working on expanding this in future. Finally, YouTube's also launching a new element within its BrandConnect creator collaboration toolset which will give creators the option to tag brand partners during video upload, or when editing their existing clips. As you can see in these examples, you'll now be able to manage brand collaboration listings in the composer flow, which YouTube says will give creators more control over which content advertisers can use, as opposed to sharing an entire channel. 'This also enables advertisers to promote a creator's sponsored content to a wider audience via Partnership Ads, which increase the visibility of the collaboration and can drive additional traffic to a creator's channel through a 'Subscribe' button, which will be included in the ad. Creators with branded mentions will have increased visibility in the advertisers' Creator Partnerships Hub, and may be suggested to new brands for additional campaigns.' Advertisers will also get access to video performance data for the tagged clips, enabling greater oversight within collaborations. The option will be available globally on the YouTube main app or YouTube Studio for creators in the YouTube partner program. 'Eligible creators can find this feature in the paid promotion and brand section under video details.' Some handy updates, with the addition of custom creative options for Shorts potentially providing another valuable option to boost engagement. You can learn more about YouTube's latest updates here. YouTube: Here's easiest method to change channel, handle name on mobile, PC

You have nailed the edits, polished your thumbnails, and maybe even cracked the monetisation code. But when someone asks, 'What's your channel called?'… you hesitate. That name, or worse, that awkward handle with numbers, was probably something you picked in a rush, and now it sticks out like a sore thumb. Whether it feels outdated, does not match your niche anymore, or just is not you, it might be time for a proper rebrand. On YouTube, changing how people see and find your channel involves two things: your channel name and your handle. The channel name is your brand title – the one viewers spot on your videos and profile. The handle, on the other hand, is your unique identifier (the @name you see in Shorts, tags, and URLs). Both can be changed, and no, you do not need to be a tech wizard to do it. Here is how to update both cleanly, whether you are on your phone or using a PC. How to change a YouTube channel name on mobile Open the YouTube app on your mobile Tap your Profile Picture Tap the View Channel at the top Next to your name, tap Edit Enter your desired channel name Click on Save How to change a YouTube channel name on PC Open YouTube on a web browser Click on your profile picture on the top right and then open YouTube Studio. You will see a field that allows you to enter a new name for your channel. Type in the desired new channel name here Click the Publish button to apply the change Note: You can change your channel name twice within a 14-day period. Changing your name will remove your verification badge. Also, channel name is subjected to availability. How to change YouTube handle name on mobile Open the YouTube app on your mobile Tap your Profile Picture Tap View Channel Tap Edit Under the Handle section, find your handle To change your handle, tap Edit Type to change the existing handle If a handle isn't available, a similar one will be suggested Tap Save to confirm your handle How to change YouTube handle name on desktop Open YouTube Studio on a web browser Sign in Select Customisation Tap Profile Under Handle, you can view or change your handle Once you've filled in the desired name, click Publish Note: You can change your handle twice within a 14-day period. Also, handle name is subjected to availability.

YouTube set to bid farewell to Trending Page after nearly a decade: Know here's why

YouTube has officially announced plans to retire its longstanding Trending Page and the Now Trending list as of today, citing a steady decline in user engagement and a significant shift in how audiences discover new content on the platform. The Trending Page, which launched in 2015, was originally designed to spotlight the most popular videos across the platform, allowing users to stay abreast of emerging trends and viral content. Over time, however, the feature became more of a benchmark for content creators to showcase the popularity of their uploads rather than a hub for genuine discovery. In a blog post announcing the move earlier this month, YouTube explained that visits to the Trending Page have notably dropped over the past five years. The company attributes this to changing user behaviour, as viewers now predominantly rely on other parts of the platform, such as personalised recommendations, Shorts, search suggestions, comments, and the Community tab, to engage with trending content. "YouTube's Home Page and algorithm-driven suggestions have become the go-to sources for users to find popular and relevant content," the company noted. "As personalisation continues to improve, users are naturally gravitating away from generalised lists like Trending." While the retirement of the Trending Page may mark the end of an era for some, YouTube reassured users that trending and popular content will remain accessible. The platform pointed to YouTube Charts, which already features trending music videos, top podcast shows, and movie trailers, as a new destination for discovering what's gaining momentum. Plans are underway to expand Charts to include additional content categories in the near future. Gaming enthusiasts will still be able to view trending videos via the dedicated Gaming Explore page, and all users can continue to explore content via the Explore tab, creator channels, and their subscription feeds. For creators seeking inspiration, YouTube Studio's Inspiration tab will continue offering personalised content ideas based on emerging trends and audience interests.

YouTube rolls out creator-focused feature Hype in India: What is it, and how do you use it?

YouTube has made Hype, a feature that lets creators gain more traction and reach the Leaderboard, available in India. With the feature, creators now have the ability to 'Hype' their videos, and it will help creators get discovered, as 'reaching new viewers can be a hurdle,' said Google India in a blog post published on Tuesday, July 15. The feature will appear just below the Like button of videos posted by YouTubers. The more the number of 'Hypes' the creator's video gets, the higher it will climb on the Leaderboard of the top 100 hyped videos. Users can only Hype a YouTube video three times per week free of charge. This feature will only be available for creators with less than 5,00,000 subscribers. Users can Hype a video posted by a creator only in the first seven days after the video is published, and as mentioned earlier, only three videos can be hyped per week for free. When a video is hyped, it receives points. The more points the content creators get, the higher they climb on a country-specific leaderboard with the top 100 Hyped videos, which appears under the Explore section on YouTube. Higher the rank, greater is the chance of the video being featured on the YouTube homepage. The Top 100 Hyped Videos tab will appear under the Explore section on YouTube. Hype also helps creators analyse their content. Hyped videos may also receive badges indicating that the video is a favourite among viewers. When viewers Hype a creator, bonus points are automatically provided for rising creators based on their number of followers. The fewer the subscribers, the higher the benefit, enabling smaller creators to obtain more traction on their content. 'We want to make sure everyone has a fair opportunity at the limelight. In just the first four weeks of our beta tests for Hype in Turkey, Taiwan, and Brazil, users hyped over 5 million times over more than 50,000 unique channels,' Google said. The Hype feature was launched globally in 2024, with a handful of YouTube creator-focused features such as automatic dubbing, which lets creators translate audio tracks into different languages before adding them to their videos. Jewels and Gifts are a new set of digital items that fans can give to creators during their live streams. Content creators on the platform can also ask an AI bot for suggestions on video ideas, titles, thumbnails, and outlines via the Inspiration Tab in YouTube Studio.

YouTube Adds Video Title Testing Option in YouTube Studio

This story was originally published on Social Media Today. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Social Media Today newsletter. YouTube's announced the next stage of its thumbnail testing rollout, with more users now able to access the feature within the 'Test and Compare' element in YouTube Studio, adding another means to optimize your YouTube content performance. And it's also now adding video title testing into the mix. As explained by YouTube: 'We're starting to experiment with a feature that gives creators the ability to test titles as well as thumbnails using our 'Test & compare' feature in Studio. We're rolling this out to a small percentage of creators at first, but we'll keep you posted on our plans to expand it to more creators.' So YouTube will now let you try out titles as well, as a means to determine the most engaging, attention-grabbing elements for your video uploads. That could be a valuable addition, providing more means to glean feedback on optimal content approaches before full publishing. YouTube originally announced that it was developing its thumbnail A/B testing feature in June 2023, and then launched an initial test with selected creators last year. As you can see in this example, YouTube's thumbnail comparison testing enables channel managers to upload up to three thumbnail images, which are then sample tested with YouTube users. As explained by YouTube: 'YouTube will show your chosen thumbnails evenly across your videos viewers and will select a winning thumbnail based on which one generates the most watch time share.' YouTube says that it's optimizing for watch time on this element because it believes that this metric is the best way to guide your content strategy decisions, and 'support your chances of success on the platform.' In other words, YouTube wants you to focus on this element to grow your channel, which means that it's the key thing that drives exposure and reach. The same process will seemingly now be applied to video titles as well, giving you another feedback option to better align your content with your audience. It could be a valuable addition, especially when you consider that top YouTubers like MrBeast spend significant amounts of time and money on thumbnail and title development, in order to maximize their video performance. Indeed, Mr Beast claims to have a team of six people that develop and test his video thumbnails, trying out up to 20 variations for each of his clips. Titles testing adds another aspect to this, ensuring more data-backed approaches to maximize your YouTube clips.
