Women in Andhra Pradesh will soon travel for free on buses. How much will it cost the exchequer?
The Chandrababu Naidu government's free bus scheme for women in Andhra Pradesh will cost the exchequer Rs 3,500 crore, officials have said. The scheme, which will be launched on August 15, is part of the Telugu Desam Party government's election 'Super Six' election guarantees, made ahead of the May 2024 election. Significantly, Telangana's Revanth Reddy scheme has also implemented a similar policy. Under the Naidu government's new bus scheme, 'Zero Fare Tickets', will be issued to all women travelling on state road transport corporation, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said. The ticket will include details such as the route travelled, the amount of money saved per trip through the free service, and the full 100 percent subsidy the government provides. Issuing Zero Fare Tickets would help women passengers clearly understand the benefit they are availing, the CM said. The CM also discussed financial aspects of the scheme in states with similar policies to understand how much it would cost, officials said, adding that the Naidu government is seeking more funds from the Centre while also exploring 'alternative revenue sources and reducing operational costs to become a profitable entity'. According to Minister for Transport, Youth Affairs and Sports Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy, approximately 25 lakh women — a majority of them who travel for work including farm labour and daily wagers — will benefit from the scheme. 'Providing cost-free transportation increases their mobility, they can travel farther, and explore new opportunities,' he said. While the finer details of the scheme are still being worked out, sources say that luxury and premium segment bus services are likely to be excluded. 'He directed officials to come up with an action plan on the possible revenue-generating methods and the necessary policy changes. Simultaneously, the chief minister instructed officials to purchase only AC electric buses in the future. He noted that converting existing buses to electric buses would reduce maintenance costs and recommended that the required electricity be produced in-house,' one official said, adding that the chief minister 'emphasised the need to study the establishment of charging stations in all RTC depots across the state'. The Andhra Pradesh RTC has a fleet of about 11,000 buses, of which over 70 per cent are non-AC regular buses. According to estimates, the scheme will cost over Rs 200 crore/month. The scheme implemented by the neighbouring Telangana is estimated to cost the exchequer Rs 3,000 crore. In Telangana, the scheme is applicable to women, children, and transgender people. This comes at a time when the Naidu government is pushing for securing more funds for various schemes and key developmental projects in the state. Apart from the bus scheme, the TDP's `Super Six' guarantees promised three free LPG cylinders to eligible beneficiaries; Rs 3,000/month in unemployment allowance and Rs 15,000 for each school child; Rs 20,000 to farmers, and increasing social security pensions for people with disabilities.

Varanasi youth summit: Kashi Declaration adopted for drug-free society
Varanasi: The Kashi Declaration, affirming a national consensus to treat substance abuse as a multi-faceted public health and societal challenge and suggesting a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach, was adopted at the Youth Spiritual Summit here on Sunday. 'If a nation, where 65 per cent of the population is youth, falls prey to addiction, only those who break free from it will be able to build the future,' said Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya. Addressing the Summit, the Union Minister said, 'We have reflected deeply over the last three days across diverse thematic sessions. Based on this collective chintan, the Kashi Declaration is born, not just as a document, but as a shared sankalp for the Yuva Shakti of Bharat.' The Youth Spiritual Summit on the theme Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat culminated at the Rudraksh International Convention Centre in Varanasi with the formal adoption of the Kashi Declaration. Organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the Summit brought together more than 600 youth leaders, representatives from over 120 spiritual and socio-cultural organisations, academicians, and domain experts. The event marked a defining moment in Bharat's journey toward a drug-free society by 2047. This gathering represented a national convergence of youthful energy, spiritual vision, and institutional resolve. The Summit featured four focused plenary sessions exploring key dimensions of substance abuse: its psychological and societal impacts, the mechanics of drug trafficking and supply chains, strategies for grassroots awareness campaigns, and the role of spiritual and cultural institutions in rehabilitation and prevention. These deliberations formed the foundation of the Kashi Declaration, which is a visionary commitment to collaborative action against drug addiction, rooted in India's civilizational wisdom and youth leadership. The Declaration emphasises the integration of spiritual, cultural, educational, and technological efforts to prevent addiction, support recovery, and foster a national culture of sobriety, said a statement. It proposes institutional mechanisms for multi-ministerial coordination, including the formation of a Joint National Committee, annual progress reporting, and a national platform for linking affected individuals to support services.

Mansukh Mandaviya joins 'Fit India Sundays on Cycle' rally in Gandhinagar, calls cycling a solution to pollution and traffic
Gandhinagar (Gujarat) [India], July 13 (ANI): Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, took part in the latest edition of Fit India Sundays on Cycle on Sunday, as part of a special rally organised under the theme 'Cycling Rally with Public Sector Undertakings' in Gandhinagar. The initiative, aimed at promoting fitness and sustainable living, aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Fit India Movement and has been gaining momentum across the country. Mandaviya said, ''Sundays on Cycle' has become a series taking forward PM Modi's vision of 'Fit India'. Cycling is the solution to pollution, traffic and is also the best exercise.' Highlighting the widespread participation of the youth, the Union Minister added, 'Youth across the country have actively participated in this movement at more than 7,000 places.' In Delhi, wrestler and BJP leader Dalip Singh Rana, popularly known as The Great Khali, on Sunday highlighted the importance of both physical fitness and the empowerment of daughters, while attending the Fit India Sundays on Cycle event. At the event, Khali lauded the initiative and underlined the importance of fitness in nation-building. 'Feels proud to be here. I see youngsters here cycling, and it is our Prime Minister's dream of a fit India. India can be a Vishwaguru only when our people are fit. This is a great initiative by the Prime Minister... Everyone should dedicate at least one hour a day to their fitness,' he told ANI. However, it was Khali's emotional remarks on the Radhika Yadav murder case that stood out. Reacting to the shocking incident where a man allegedly killed his own daughter, Khali said, 'This is an unfortunate incident that a man killed his own daughter. How will we work towards our motto of 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' if we go on killing our daughters?' The former WWE superstar, visibly disturbed, stressed the need to shift societal mindsets. 'We cannot become a vishwaguru till we support our daughters. I have a daughter. Daughters are no less than sons, and it is all a matter of mentality, which some people still need to change... Everyone should support their daughters and motivate them to pursue sports,' he added. (ANI)

New Delhi: The Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, inaugurated the 2025 season of the ASMITA league in Modinagar, Uttar Pradesh, on Tuesday. The 2025 season of ASMITA began with the weightlifting league, where 42 girls are participating in eight different weight categories in the two-day event being held in the Open category. In the current financial year 2025-26, 852 leagues across 15 sports disciplines have been planned. The leagues spread across the states and Union Territories will feature over 70,000 female athletes. Last season, 550 leagues were conducted across 27 sports disciplines that enabled the participation of 53,101 female athletes. 'It is our mission to create opportunities at every level and then spot talent and groom them. I see there is a lot of fire in the eyes of these kids who have turned up here in Modinagar. I am sure we will be able to find another Mirabai Chanu,' said Mandaviya. Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Mirabai Chanu was among the host of dignitaries who were present at the inauguration of the ASMITA weightlifting league. Boosting the morale of the participants was Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Raksha Nikhil Khadse. 'ASMITA is a big pillar in our robust sports programme. Women have demonstrated their ability to excel in sports, and the sky is the limit for them. The intent in the eyes of the kids is something that needs to be cultivated,' said Raksha Khadse. 'You can't have a better role model than Mirabai Chanu. Having come from a remote Manipur village and achieved excellence at the highest levels, she has created a benchmark for all women weightlifters. Her presence should inspire the young girls who are taking part in weightlifting,' said Dr. Mandaviya. He also reiterated the government's '360 degrees' commitment to sports and emphasised how this is reflected in the sports budget that has increased fourfold in the last 10 years. 'We are looking to reach every corner of India and tell aspiring sportspersons that we now have a pathway for you to rise and shine. Our Khelo Bharat Niti (sports policy) has been designed in this manner, and having collaborated with the National Education Policy, we are giving a lot of impetus to school sports. These will be reflected in the Khelo India calendar that we have created. There will be no dearth of opportunities." Olympian Mirabai said the ASMITA Leagues, which started in 2021, have been a huge boon for women in sports. 'Its tiered structure is perfectly scripted. Everyone now has a vision of how to make it to the highest level. We didn't get such opportunities, and that's why ASMITA is a blessing for women who want to play a sport and dream big,' said Mirabai.
