Edmundo Sosa homers as Phillies sweep Rangers

August 10 - Edmundo Sosa hit a solo home run and Bryce Harper had an RBI double as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the slumping Texas Rangers 4-2 on Sunday to sweep a three-game interleague series in Arlington, Texas. Sosa's solo homer in the fifth tied the game 2-2. Philadelphia took the lead in the frame when Bryson Stott singled, stole second, and scored on Weston Wilson's hit off Rangers starter Patrick Corbin (6-8). The Phillies' Zach Wheeler (10-5), working with two extra days of rest because of a sore shoulder, allowed two runs on three hits and three walks over five innings while striking out seven and won for the first time since July 6, with two losses and a pair of no decisions in the interim. Tanner Banks, Matt Strahm and Orion Kerkering each pitched a scoreless inning in relief of Wheeler before Jhoan Duran allowed a hit in the ninth on the way to recording his 20th save of the season and second in as many games in this series. Corbin went 4 1/3 inning, surrendering three runs on four hits and three walks with one strikeout. The loss snapped a streak of four straight no decisions for Corbin, whose most recent victory came on July 10 on the road against the Angels. Both teams had seven hits, with J.T. Realmuto and Stott leading Philadelphia with two each; seven different players produced hits for the Rangers. The Phillies have won six of their past seven games while the Rangers have dropped four straight. Joc Pederson staked the Rangers to the lead with a two-run home run in the first inning that allowed Corey Seager, who had walked, to score ahead of him. Philadelphia answered in the fourth when Trea Turner walked to open the frame and sprinted home on Bryce Harper's double to the right field corner. Brandon Marsh's sacrifice fly in the ninth off Rangers reliever Phil Maton plated Harrison Bader with the game's final run. --Field Level Media

Phillies' 5-4 loss to Padres drops them out of 1st place in NL East, half-game behind Mets

Manny Machado's seventh-inning sacrifice fly led the San Diego Padres to a 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night. With the defeat, the Phillies have lost four of their past five games and dropped out of first place in the National League East, falling a half-game behind the New York Mets. Phillies starter Zach Wheeler had one of his worst performances of the season, giving up four runs and six hits over six innings. It was only the third time this year that he's allowed four runs or more. Leading up to Saturday's game, Wheeler had allowed one run or fewer in six consecutive starts and nine of his past 10. Advertisement The Phillies built a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a Nick Castellanos RBI single, followed by a run-scoring double from J.T. Realmuto. San Diego tied the score in the bottom of the frame on a two-run homer by Jackson Merrill. The Padres then went on top, 3-2, on a RBI single from Martín Maldonado. Philadelphia rallied to take a 4-3 lead in the fifth on a two-run single from Edmundo Sosa. That knocked out Padres starter Yu Darvish, who gave up four runs, five hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings in his second appearance of the season. Merrill once again tied the score with his second homer of the game. He connected with a 95 mph fastball from Wheeler, thrown high out of the strike zone but outside enough for Merrill to extend and pull the ball to right-center field. Advertisement The Padres took the lead for good in the seventh after Tanner Banks took over for Wheeler. Banks struck out Maldonado to begin the inning, but then allowed consecutive singles to Fernando Tatis Jr. and Luis Arraez. He was relieved by Jordan Romano, who left a 92.5 mph fastball down the middle of the strike zone for Machado to drive for what turned out to be his game-winning sacrifice fly. Philadelphia had an opportunity to tie the score in the eighth when Realmuto singled, then advanced to third on a base hit from Otto Kemp. But Brandon Marsh popped up a Yuki Matsui fastball left right in the middle of the strike zone and couldn't drive Realmuto in. Advertisement In the ninth, Jeremiah Estrada pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, retiring Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper for his third save of the season. With the loss, the Phillies dropped to 54-41 and lost first place in the NL East for the first time since June 26. The Padres improved to 52-43, which keeps them 4.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers (57-39), who got a 2-1 win over the San Francisco Giants (52-44) on Saturday.

Philadelphia Phillies' Bryson Stott On The Grind Of 162-Game Season & Key To Beating New York Mets

Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Bryson Stott wants to win the World Series this season. (Photo ... More by) Bryson Stott knows better than anybody that baseball is full of ups and downs. The veteran second baseman is in the midst of his fourth season and he's gone through it himself this year. The 27-year-old had struggled as of late, going 2-for-21 in his prior at bats and 1-for-11 to start July. He broke out of that slump with a home run in the Philadelphia Phillies' 3-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday. The home run propelled the Phillies to victory in a game that was tied behind pitcher Zach Wheeler's one-hit effort. "Just knowing it's long and you're going to have those ups and downs," says Stott in a one-on-one interview. "It's not always the easiest of going. If it was, a lot more people would do what we do. That's what makes baseball so much fun is, you're going to go through the highs and lows." Stott has been the Phillies' starting second baseman since debuting in 2022. He's been a steady fixture in the lineup surrounding by All-Star talent in Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper. He posted 11 home runs and 57 RBIs with a career-high 32 stolen bases last season, but he has struggled a bit this year, batting .204 with a .538 OPS since May 1. Although Stott's name has been involved in trade rumors, he remains as upbeat as ever before the trade deadline at the end of this month. "Obviously, you want to get out of the lows as fast as you can and get back to those highs," says Stott. "But sometimes it just doesn't happen. You got to show up every day and keep working and take extra swings and do what you need to do to get to where you want to be." It helps that the Phillies are leading the NL East midway through the season. Entering Tuesday's game against the San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia leads the New York Mets by a game. The Phillies have been to the playoffs during every year of Stott's career, winning the division last season. "You just want to play well every day," says Stott. "I always go back to you don't know which game is going to get you in the playoffs, whether that game is in April or that game is in September. It's always seems like it comes down to a few games, and you want to make sure that you just take it day by day, and win the game that you're supposed to win that day." The Mets are obviously a real threat considering they now feature four-time All-Star Juan Soto in the lineup. They came within two games of reaching the World Series last season. However, the Phillies still feature a veteran and battle-tested group, led by All-Stars Wheeler and Schwarber. They also have established All-Stars such as Harper, J.T. Realmuto and Trea Turner. "They have a good team," says Stott. "Obviously, adding Soto is going to help. Every time we play them, it comes down to one swing, so you want to be on the right side of that swing. We have a good team. They have a good team, and we know each other very well. We know their pitchers. They know our pitchers. It's about executing and doing the little things, and just keep playing our game, and the good things will happen." Stott says it's a "long" season but when asked what the season objective is, it's simple — win a World Series. The Phillies advanced to the World Series in his rookie season but lost to the Houston Astros in six games. "Yes, obviously," says Stott when asked about the objective being to win the World Series this season. "We talked about it in spring training and then you get into that six-month season and you want to be playing your best baseball at the very end." Stott is partnering with BAND-AID, a long-time sponsor of the Phillies. The veteran second baseman explains how the bandages – he points toward the PRO HEAL bandages – help big time with his recovery and routine. "My everyday life with kids and sliding around on dirt and grass and things like that all day, the cuts and scrapes, they come and go and with BAND-AID," says Stott. "It's top notch and they actually stick. They stick for a long time, and I don't have to worry about them rolling up or anything like that if I slide again. The quicker those little scrapes and cuts go away, the less I have to worry about it and to just move on. If it happens again. I have more and more BAND-AID brand band aids to get me through those little cuts and scrapes." The 27-year-old has been collaborating with BAND-AID for the past month and has filmed social media content for them. He says he's been using the brand since he was a "crazy kid" growing up. "I was the crazy kid growing up and doing backflips off benches and things like that," says Stott. "I wasn't scared of anything. My mom always had the BAND-AID brand bandages in her purse and things like that. It was just non-stop BAND-AIDS for me. I was kind of the wild child."

New Leader Emerges in NL Cy Young Race

New Leader Emerges in NL Cy Young Race originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There's a new leader in the race to win the 2025 NL Cy Young. According to latest Cy Young rankings, Philadelphia Phillies ace Zach Wheeler takes the top spot, edging out superstar Paul Skenes. Advertisement Wheeler, a consistent candidate who placed second in 2024 and 2021, has never taken home the prize but is putting up a strong fight in 2025. With two months remaining in the season, he has risen to the top thanks to his outstanding June performance and ongoing excellence. He currently leads the NL in strikeouts with 148 and is second in ERA with a 2.17, only trailing Skenes' 1.94. His June was especially impressive as he gave up only two earned runs during the month, displaying elite control and dominating play. Wheeler improved to 9-3 on July 6 after throwing a complete game against the Cincinnati Reds, giving up just one hit. The only blemish was a leadoff homer in the fifth inning. Advertisement His strikeout-to-walk ratio is impressive, with 148 strikeouts against just 25 walks, bolstered by a career-best 32.5% strikeout rate and a 52.7% zone rate. Although Skenes has also been dominant this year, it feels like the former New York Met deserves the No. 1 spot right now. His edge in strikeouts, whip, and durability stand out. According to Wheeler is second in the MLB with 14 quality starts and is only behind Logan Webb of the San Francisco Giants. Wheeler's ability to dominate matchups while limiting walks has cemented him as one of MLB's best pitchers. His blend of experience and current high-level play positions him to capture his first Cy Young award, potentially.
