ZoRO vice-prez highlights plight of indigenous Mizo tribes

Aizawl: Zo Re-unification Organisation (ZoRO) vice-president L Ramdinliana Renthlei highlighted the plight of the indigenous Mizo tribes, scattered across the globe, as they continue to yearn for self-rule. He said while there are over 370 million indigenous people conquered by mightier nations worldwide, the Mizo community is among these tribes striving for unity and recognition. On the occasion of World Indigenous Peoples' Day on Saturday, Renthlei extended his greetings to all Mizo ethnic tribes (Zofate) globally and called for the reunification of the scattered Zofate. He emphasised the need for a collective effort towards asserting their rights and identity as a unified people. Renthlei referred to the UN's 'Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples' (adopted on Sept 13, 2007), which advocates for indigenous peoples' self-determination and the restoration of their rights. According to the ZoRO vice-president, this declaration has been a source of hope for the 'Zofate', who are now eagerly looking forward to achieving self-rule under a single administrative unit. He said while the Zofate are currently divided across various nations, their unification remains a critical goal. He stressed the importance of maintaining unity at the heart of the movement, as it would enable the people to reclaim their lost heritage and rights. ZoRO, which was formed on May 20, 1988, to promote the reunification of the Zofate, gained NGO status as an affiliated member of the United Nations on May 21, 2004. ZoRO to oppose Centre's border fencing & FMR lifting proposal

Aizawl: The Zo Reunification Organisation (ZoRO) said it will intensify its opposition to the Centre's proposal to fence the India-Myanmar border and lift the free movement regime (FMR), a media statement issued by ZoRO said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Mizoram chief minister Lalduhoma also supports their views, it said. ZoRO is an Aizawl-based group which seeks the reunification of all Chin-Kuki-Mizo-Zomi tribes of India, Bangladesh and Myanmar by bringing them under one administration. ZoRO general secretary L Ramdinliana Renthlei said the organisation's leaders met Lalduhoma on Friday to apprise him about their activities opposing the scrapping of the FMR and the proposed fencing of the India-Myanmar border by the Centre. "ZoRO urged the chief minister to oppose border fencing and not to allot lands within Mizoram for execution of fencing works in Mizoram-Myanmar border areas and also make efforts to ensure that FMR stays as before. We appealed to Lalduhoma to oppose the decisions of the central government," Renthlei said in the statement. He added Lalduhoma expressed support to the stance of the ZoRO, vowing to take all necessary steps in this regard. ZoRO said by scrapping the FMR and fencing the India-Myanmar border, the Indian govt violates Article 36 (a) and (b) of the UN Declaration on the Rights Of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). "We strongly condemn the proposal of the Indian govt to further divide 'Zofate' or ethnic Mizos who are recognised by the world body as indigenous peoples living across the international border," the statement said. The statement said ZoRO will intensify movement against the decision of the Centre on border fencing and the FMR for which systematic preparations are being made and it appeals to 'Zofate' across the globe to support its efforts in unification of all the ethnic Mizos.
