Lalduhoma's new car raises eyebrows; ZPM calls it ‘a necessity'
Aizawl: Responding to mounting criticism, the ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) on Tuesday defended chief minister Lalduhoma's acquisition of a new car, calling it a practical choice rather than an extravagant one. Addressing reporters at the Aizawl Press Club, ZPM spokesperson K Laltluangkima acknowledged Lalduhoma's 2023 election promise to avoid expensive vehicles. "He did make that pledge. Initially, he used a 15-year-old car inherited from his predecessors. But repeated breakdowns prompted the purchase of a new car, priced between Rs 20 to 32 lakh," he said, adding that the model is common and hardly luxurious. Laltluangkima pointed to a recent video showing the Nagaland CM with a 31-car convoy — 11 of which, he said, were the same model as Mizoram's CM's car. "Label it expensive if you must, but criticism may be overstated," he added. "Our CM is entitled to Z+ security. Despite being entitled to a bulletproof vehicle, the CM chose a regular car — a commendable decision under the circumstances." "Better roads might have allowed cheaper alternatives. But in our terrain, such choices aren't viable," he said.

Mizoram BJP MLA slams ZPM for issue-based support to NDA
Aizawl: BJP legislator K Hrahmo on Monday criticised the ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) for supporting the BJP-led NDA govt on an issue-based approach rather than formally joining it. He said this decision has cost Mizoram vital opportunities and contributed to the state's worsening financial situation. Speaking at the Mizoram BJP's weekly political session held at the Atal Bhavan, Hrahmo said, "When BJP and its allies were about to form the govt at the Centre, our state was also invited to be a part of it. But our current state govt, ZPM, responded by offering issue-based support. Had they joined the govt, Mizoram could have avoided its present hardships and benefited from people-oriented policies and strong national support, particularly for Christians and missionaries. " He added that had Mizoram been part of the ruling bloc, the state could have secured a Union minister's post. "Our state govt claims to support the Centre on an issue-by-issue basis. But does the Centre support Mizoram in return?" he asked, implying that the state has not received any special attention or benefits despite its declared support. Hrahmo said over 228 people from Aizawl joined BJP on Monday, despite negative perceptions about the party.

Lalduhoma met Modi at the latter's official residence in Delhi and asked him to inaugurate the Bairabi-Sairang road and the Sairang Rail station in the outskirts of Aizawl. Sources in the Northeastern Frontier Railway (NFR) said the PM is likely to inaugurate the newly constructed railway line by the end of July as safety inspection by the commissioner of railway safety (CRS) and trial run along the entire railway had already been completed. During the meeting, the two leaders discussed wide ranging issues, including fallout of the recent conflict in the Chin state effecting Mizoram. They also discussed the proposed Thenzawl Peace City Project, 'Hand-holding scheme' — the flagship programme of the present Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) govt and upgrading the World Bank-funded Aizawl to Thenzawl road into a national highway. Lalduhoma also raised the issue of the Rs 9,265 crore northeast grid national gas pipeline project being undertaken by the Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL). The PM in turn said he wanted the deputy commissioner of Mamit district bordering Tripura to speed up the construction of the pipeline as it will be going through the district.

ZPM-guv ‘rift' over guv rule in CADC
Aizawl: The differences between the Mizoram governor and the ruling party in the state have come out in the open with the ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) voicing support for the Mizoram council of ministers' decision urging the governor to revoke the recent imposition of governor's rule in the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC). The ZPM's statement on Wednesday followed a press conference held on Tuesday when home minister K Sapdanga had addressed the issue of the CADC being placed under the governor's rule by governor Gen VK Singh on Monday. Citing provisions under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, particularly Paragraph 14, the ZPM explained that the governor may institute a commission to assess the functioning of autonomous district or regional councils. The findings of such a panel are to be presented to the state legislature along with the governor's recommendations. The ZPM stated that the decision of the council of ministers was consistent with democratic norms and the rightful process for upholding public representation.

MLA accuses ZPM of funds mismanagement
Aizawl: K Hrahmo, a BJP MLA in Mizoram, on Monday unleashed a scathing attack on the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) govt, accusing it of failing to secure Centre-funded projects as well as mismanaging the state's finances, reports HC Vanlalruata. Speaking at a political session organised by Mizoram BJP , Hrahmo criticised the govt's inability to implement effective projects, claiming that the few they had executed were classified as 'departmental works', preventing the collection of GST. "From Jan to June 2025, GST collections have continued to decline. A major issue here is the state's inability to secure project funds from the Centre, which has caused a significant financial gap," Hrahmo said.
