Lorry driver in FRU crash unable to post bail

TELUK INTAN: The lorry driver charged in connection with the death of nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel here has not been able to post bail, police say. Perak deputy police chief Deputy Comm Zulkafli Sariaat said the accused, Rudi Zulkarnain Md Radi, 45, will therefore be detained at the Batu Gajah lock-up until the next court mention date on June 17. 'Bail was set at RM6,000 and he was unable to pay. We have also not received any payment from others so far,' he said at Hospital Teluk Intan (HTI) yesterday. On Friday, the Teluk Intan Magistrate's Court set the bail after Rudi Zulkarnain pleaded not guilty to nine charges of causing death by dangerous driving. Media reports indicated that some netizens were willing to post bail for the driver. DCP Zulkafli said a witness who claimed that the lorry driver attempted to avoid another vehicle at the crash site had yet to come forward. He added that to date, 16 witnesses had provided their statements. Meanwhile, six of the FRU members who were hospitalised after being involved in the incident on Tuesday are still undergoing treatment. Perak Health director Dr Feisul Idzwan Mustapha said of the six, five were at HTI and the other at Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun in Ipoh. 'Of the five patients currently receiving treatment at HTI, four are in ICU. The other is in the surgical ward and his condition is improving. He may be discharged soon,' he said. Dr Feisul Idzwan said another member was discharged on Friday. Earlier, Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah met family members of the FRU personnel at the hospital, Bernama reported.

Lorry driver in fatal FRU crash remains in custody as no bail posted

TELUK INTAN: No one has come forward to post bail for a 45-year-old lorry driver charged with causing the deaths of nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) policemen due to reckless driving yesterday. Perak deputy police chief, Deputy Commissioner Zulkafli Sariaat, said that so far, no one had offered to do so. "The bail for the lorry driver was set at RM6,000. "He was unable to pay it, so he has been remanded and will be transferred to Batu Gajah prison until the trial, scheduled for June 17," he told reporters at the Teluk Intan Hospital today. Zulkafli was responding to reports that some social media users had offered to assist the lorry driver with bail after he was unable to afford it. According to these individuals, they claimed the accident was not caused by the driver but by a steering malfunction. Yesterday, the lorry driver, Rudi Zulkarnian Mat Radi, was charged in the Sessions Court with nine counts of dangerous driving causing death. He pleaded not guilty to all charges framed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. The alleged offences stem from a crash at Km15, Jalan Sungai Manik, Hilir Perak, at around 9:05am on May 13. Judge Nur Hamizah Shaffiuddin set bail at RM6,000 for all charges and fixed June 17 for mention. When asked if the lorry driver was also wanted in connection with a cattle theft case, Zulkafli said the matter was still under investigation.
