Lorry driver in fatal FRU crash remains in custody as no bail posted
TELUK INTAN: No one has come forward to post bail for a 45-year-old lorry driver charged with causing the deaths of nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) policemen due to reckless driving yesterday.
Perak deputy police chief, Deputy Commissioner Zulkafli Sariaat, said that so far, no one had offered to do so.
"The bail for the lorry driver was set at RM6,000.
"He was unable to pay it, so he has been remanded and will be transferred to Batu Gajah prison until the trial, scheduled for June 17," he told reporters at the Teluk Intan Hospital today.
Zulkafli was responding to reports that some social media users had offered to assist the lorry driver with bail after he was unable to afford it.
According to these individuals, they claimed the accident was not caused by the driver but by a steering malfunction.
Yesterday, the lorry driver, Rudi Zulkarnian Mat Radi, was charged in the Sessions Court with nine counts of dangerous driving causing death.
He pleaded not guilty to all charges framed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. The alleged offences stem from a crash at Km15, Jalan Sungai Manik, Hilir Perak, at around 9:05am on May 13.
Judge Nur Hamizah Shaffiuddin set bail at RM6,000 for all charges and fixed June 17 for mention.
When asked if the lorry driver was also wanted in connection with a cattle theft case, Zulkafli said the matter was still under investigation.

After the incident, the suspect was taken to the Kluang police headquarters' Narcotics Crime Investigation Division for a urine test. The suspect also has a criminal record. The case is being investigated under Section 44(1)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for self-administering dangerous drugs.

JPJ opens probe paper on lorry company in fatal FRU crash

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The road transport department (JPJ) has opened an investigation paper on the lorry company involved in the accident that took the lives of nine Federal Reserve Unit personnel in Teluk Intan, Perak last month. JPJ senior director (enforcement) Kifli Ma Hassan said the investigation was being conducted under Section 57 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010, relating to operator licence conditions. 'JPJ has seized the lorry involved, and the investigating officer has been instructed to complete the investigation paper by the end of this month. 'Once completed, the investigation paper will be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor for further action,' Bernama quoted him as saying. Klifli said the initial investigation found that the lorry company had violated its permit conditions. 'The lorry company was found to have violated the permit conditions by carrying an unauthorised load, namely rocks, while the approved permit was to transport coal. 'We are still investigating the case and appropriate action will be taken,' he said. On May 12, a lorry collided with a truck carrying 18 FRU members on Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampan in Teluk Intan, while they were on their way back to Ipoh. Nine FRU members were killed, while nine others were injured.

Kemaman cops seize 12 motorcycles in anti-street racing operation
CHUKAI: Twelve motorcycles have been seized during a two-day anti-street racing operation dubbed Ops Samseng Jalanan here. Kemaman police chief Supt Mohd Razi Rosli said the operation was conducted after a viral video showed a group of motorcyclists racing and riding recklessly around the town. He added that they issued 74 summonses for various offences under Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987. "The operation involved 17 personnel from 1am to 5am on Saturday (June 7) and continued on Sunday (June 8) during the same hours. During the operation, we seized 12 motorcycles and issued 74 summonses after inspecting 68 vehicles," he said in a statement on Sunday. Mohd Razi urged parents to pay closer attention to their children's movements and activities, particularly those involving motorcycles. He said illegal street racing not only breaks the law but also poses a threat to the lives and safety of other road users. – Bernama
