Dave Bautista Joins 'Highlander' Reboot As Villain Opposite Henry Cavill

After much clamouring from fans for Dave Bautista to play the villain to Henry Cavill's ( Man of Steel , The Witcher ) Highlander Connor MacLeod, word is that the Guardians of the Galaxy star is in final negotiations to join the Amazon MGM reboot of 1986's cult classic Highlander . Dave Bautista In the original Highlander , Christopher Lambert ( Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance ) portrayed MacLeod, a medieval Scottish Highlander who learns he is immortal. He is mentored by Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, played by Sean Connery ( James Bond films), and ultimately engages in a centuries-spanning conflict with other immortals, adhering to the film's iconic line 'there can only be one'. The new action-fantasy film, produced under Amazon MGM's United Artists banner, is confirmed for a theatrical release and sees Bautista joining Cavill, Russell Crowe ( The Pope's Exorcist , Gladiator ), and Marisa Abela ( Back to Black ) in the cast. Cavill will star as MacLeod, with Crowe taking on the role of Ramirez. In this new version, Bautista may helm the role of The Kurgen , a ruthless immortal barbarian, who has murdered others across centuries to absorb their essence. In the original, this formidable antagonist was memorably portrayed by Clancy Brown ( The Penguin ). Bautista's near-confirmed casting marks both a full-circle moment and the realisation of a long-running fan wish. He was previously in talks to play the Kurgan in 2015, when an earlier version of Highlander was in development under director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan ( The Huntsman: Winter's War ) for Summit Entertainment. More recently, fans have imagined Cavill and Bautista as rival immortals in a series of fan-made trailers. Chad Stahelski, director of the John Wick series, is at the helm of the upcoming film. Principal photography is scheduled to begin at the end of September, with filming set to take place across locations in the UK and Hong Kong. Michael Finch, co-writer of John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023), penned the screenplay. Production isled by Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt under United Artists, Neal H. Moritz, Stahelski's 87Eleven Entertainment, Josh Davis of Davis Panzer Productions, and Louise Rosner also serving as producers. Dave Bautista as J.J. in My Spy (2020) Bautista's likely casting marks a return to Amazon feature projects. He has starred in the action comedies My Spy (2020) and its sequel, is in post-production on The Wrecking Crew opposite Jason Momoa, and is reportedly in talks for the sequel to Road House (2024), all in collaboration with Amazon. An exact release date for Highlander has not yet been set, though Stahelski previously said it would likely arrive in either 2027 or 2028. Tom Holland Calls Christopher Nolan's ‘Odyssey' the ‘Job of a Lifetime,' Promises a Movie ‘Unlike Anything We've Ever Seen'

In an interview with GQ Sports, Tom Holland extolled his experience working on Christopher Nolan's highly-anticipated follow-up to the Oscar-winning 'Oppenheimer,' the action fantasy 'The Odyssey' — an adaptation of the famous Homer epic. 'It was amazing. The job of a lifetime, without a doubt,' Holland said. 'The best experience I've had on the film set. Incredible. It was exciting. It was different. And I think the movie is going to be unlike anything we've ever seen.' 'Matt Damon has always been a hero of mine, Anne Hathaway has always been a hero of mine. So to share scenes with them, to learn from them, to become friends with them, I couldn't have asked for a better job. And I'm so proud of the work I've done. I came to work every day with a real sense of purpose and a point to prove, and I'm so grateful for Chris to have given me that opportunity,' he said.' Nolan is once again producing with his wife Dame Emma Thomas, both of whom were knighted after becoming at the same ceremony in 2024. 'Working with Chris, getting to know him and Emma [Thomas] was absolutely fantastic,' Holland said. 'I've never seen someone that can work the way that they do, and there is a reason why they're the best in the business for sure. To get a front row seat to that and to be a part of the process and to collaborate with a true master of his craft and learn from him was the best experience I've ever had.' 'The Odyssey' trailer premiered exclusively in cinemas last month, and has yet to be officially released online, but according to ScreenRant includes clips of the fall of Troy, Damon as Odysseus, and Holland playing Telemachus — who, in the story, searches for his father (Odysseus), missing since he left to fight in the Trojan War. 'The Odyssey' will be released in theaters everywhere July 17, 2026. New Old Guard 2 Trailer Sees Charlize Theron Cross Swords With Uma Thurman

It'll be a fight for the ages in the long-awaited sequel to Netflix's hit action-fantasy film. Ahead of Netflix's Tudum event, the streamer and Skydance released the official trailer for The Old Guard 2, starring Charlize Theron. For those who may have forgotten, The Old Guard was a pretty kick-ass sci-fi action film released on the streamer in 2020. Based on Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández's Image Comics series, the movie follows a team of immortal mercenaries-turned-found family, led by Theron's Andy, battling unseen threats to protect humanity. Along the way they bring a girl named Nile (KiKi Layne) into the fold, have their secret exposed, and suffer betrayal from within their tight-knit group. Now, after five years of patient anticipation, the newly released trailer sees Andy confronting her former bestie Quynh (Veronica Ngô), whom she left in an iron maiden at the bottom of the ocean. Andy also has her work cut out with a deadly confrontation with the first immortal being, played by Uma Thurman, who threatens to destroy everything they hold dear with a power 'they can't even imagine.' Not only does Thurman's villain come equipped with a katana, but she also has a mysterious bone to pick with Andy, rivaling the fury of the Bride's warpath in Kill Bill. Naturally, the trailer hints at a final showdown between Thurman and Theron, teasing a powerhouse match-up action fans didn't know they wanted to see. Aside from the enticing tease of seeing Theron and Thurman fight, the trailer also sprinkles a nugget of information that would make their battle even more one-sided in Thurman's favor. Despite apparently knowing the Old Guard's history and relationships, she doesn't seem to understand that Theron's Andy is no longer immortal—though who could blame her, with all of the death-defying stunts we see in the trailer? As revealed in the movie's official description, with Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts) in exile, Andy, Nile, Joe (Marwan Kenzari), Nicky (Luca Marinelli), and James Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) seek out Tuah (Henry Golding), an old ally who may hold the key to unlocking the secrets of their immortality. Whether this discovery will help Andy regain her lost immortality or strip it from Thurman's character to level the playing field for their final confrontation remains to be seen. Filming for The Old Guard 2 wrapped up in 2022, but post-production faced delays due to shifts at Netflix and industry-wide strikes. Because of the film's radio silence, fans feared the project had been put on ice. However, in a 2024 interview with Variety, Theron set the record straight, reassuring folks the sequel was still moving forward—and that she was 'really excited about it.' 'It's really good,' Theron told Variety. 'It's a really important film to us. I only wanted to do it if we could make it amazing. I really love this movie.' The Old Guard 2 releases July 2.
