I come across dozens of new beauty products every month, each with a catchier marketing spiel than the last. This is especially the case with skincare. I've lost count of the number of times I've heard of a product claiming to be 'Botox in a bottle' or 'filler in a pot'. I've spoken to a number of dermatologists and aestheticians who are seeing a move towards more active skincare over injectables. 'I talk to a lot of women who don't want injectables but want to boost their own collagen for more natural-looking results,' agrees the consultant dermatologist Dr Mary Sommerlad. 'There's a real desire in skincare now to boost healthy skin and improve our own cell function,' she says. In her clinic in London, Dr Sommerlad is noticing an increase in patients complaining of softening of the skin's structure or hollowing of areas such as the cheeks. This is often down to the natural ageing process and will gradually happen in midlife, but the effects can appear more strikingly in anyone who has rapidly lost weight due to GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic. Dr Sommerlad is certainly seeing the shift, with more patients on these sorts of medications. 'Filler injections were much more common a few years back because you could achieve instant volume in the face if you're noticing sagging skin,' she says. 'But you can do more with skincare nowadays.
