Former Public Enemy No. 1 sentenced to life in prison without parole for murder of his girlfriend

Terence Trent Vos will spend the rest of his life in prison, without the possibility of parole, after he was found guilty of aggravated murder in the killing of his girlfriend, Shandon Nicole Scott. Unified police responded to a crash on I-80 in Salt Lake County in the early morning hours of May 1, 2021, and found Scott, 32, with 'many gunshot wounds,' according to the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office. A witness to the crash reported seeing Vos in the driver's seat; the person said Vos had tried to take their vehicle but they stopped him. Vos ran from the scene when law enforcement arrived. Unified police later said Scott was shot at a townhome complex at 700 East and 2700 South shortly before officers responded to the crash at 3 a.m. Their investigation found neighbors heard pounding, screaming and gunshots about 2:45 a.m. After being arrested, Vos told officers someone else had shot Scott, but he then admitted to a friend during a phone call while incarcerated that he had gotten into a fight with Scott and shot her. Vos, 35, of Salt Lake City, is a former Public Enemy No. 1 of the Salt Lake City Metro Gang Unit. In addition to his life sentence, the judge gave Vos four sentences of five years to life for three counts of felony discharge of a firearm causing serious injury and possession of a firearm as a restricted person, first-degree felonies. Vos also received a sentence of one to 15 years in prison for obstructing justice, a second-degree felony. He was given credit for the time he served resolving his conviction for failure to stop at the command of a law officer, a class A misdemeanor. Third District Judge Elizabeth Hruby-Mills ordered each of the sentences to run consecutively with previous sentences in other cases but concurrently with each other. In a statement Friday, Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said his office hopes Scott's family can 'now begin to heal' from their loss. 'We applaud the judge for sentencing the defendant to life without the possibility of parole. The streets of Salt Lake County will be safer now that this violent habitual offender is behind bars for the rest of his life,' Gill said. Vos was found guilty in March following a six-day jury trial. He has received multiple charges for alleged crimes while incarcerated since the killing, including threatening Utah Department of Corrections officers last month.

Man, 31, died in the Pierce County Jail Friday afternoon, sheriff's office says

A 31-year-old man in custody at the Pierce County Jail suffered a medical emergency and died Friday afternoon, a spokesperson for the sheriff's department said Sunday. The man's name will be released by the Pierce County Medical Examiner, Deputy Carly Cappetto said. About 5:25 p.m., the man, who had been in jail for two years, suffered a medical emergency from a previous (health) condition, Cappetto said. He alerted medical staff, who happened to be in his area for an unrelated incident, and they came to assist him, she said. 'Staff attempted life-saving measures but he was later pronounced deceased,' Cappetto said. The man died at 6:23 p.m., about an hour after the medical emergency. His death is under investigation, she said. The man had been in custody since May 15, 2023. He was being held on two counts of first-degree aggravated murder and unlawful possession of a firearm, Cappetto said.

3 Canton teens facing murder charges tied to gang-related fatal drive-by shooting

CANTON ‒ Three teens accused of killing Bryson O. Barksdale Sr. in a drive-by shooting have been indicted on multiple charges in connection with the April 2023 incident. Tracian L. Jones, 19, Jerry Dotson III, 19, and Paul G. Johnson, 18, are charged with aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault, improperly discharging a firearm into a habitation and other charges and specifications. The Canton men were minors when Barksdale, 35, was shot inside a house on Otto Place NE. Canton police Detective Scott Jones testified during a February hearing in Stark County Family Court that the three teens were believed to be associated with a gang, and the home where Barksdale was shot was affiliated with a rival gang member. A dispute on social media was highlighted as a potential motive. Jones said the victim, however, was not believed to be affiliated with either gang, and was more likely in "the wrong place at the wrong time." Following the hearing, Family County Judge Judge Matthew P. Kreitzer ruled the trio should be tried as adults and bound the case over to Stark County Common Pleas Court. Their indictments were contained in a grand jury report dated April 16. 2023 drive-by shooting: Three Canton teens to be tried as adults All three are facing additional charges of discharge of a firearm on or near prohibited premises and receiving stolen property, Johnson and Jones were charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle. Dotson was charged with having weapons under disability. All three indictments include specifications that a gun was used in the crimes and that they were committed during criminal gang activity. Online court records do not indicate that the defendants have attorneys in their common pleas court cases. Johnson and Jones are being held in the Cuyahoga Hills Juvenile Correctional Facility in the village of Highland Hills in the Cleveland area. Dotson is in the Richland Correctional Institution in Mansfield. A murder conviction can result in a sentence of 15 years to life in prison.
