KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — The Ministry of Health has approved an allocation of RM1.05 million to carry out minor works and improvements at the Duchess of Kent Hospital in Sandakan. Its Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, said the allocation would cover the additional needs for the surgical ward, as well as for medical and non-medical assets required by the hospital. 'This allocation is for urgent applications needed by the hospital and its patients here,' he told reporters after a visit to the Duchess of Kent Hospital yesterday adding that improvements from this allocation also include adding more chairs for patient waiting areas, as well as replacing mattresses and pillows. Meanwhile, Dzulkefly said he is on an intensive three-day visit, starting yesterday, to 22 health facilities across six districts in Sabah. 'Earlier, we went to the Karamunting Health Clinic and now we are at the Duchess of Kent Hospital. I just listened to an excellent presentation from the hospital's director, Dr Mohd Fahmie Othman. I have learned about the needs and facility constraints at this hospital, and I am committed to providing 'adequacy',' he said. In addition, he wants the services at health clinics to be strengthened to reduce overcrowding at major hospitals like the Duchess of Kent Hospital. This includes moving minor surgeries to health clinics with the involvement of specialists. — Bernama

Anwar announces RM10m aid for Muar B40 families, vows swift disbursement

MUAR, July 27 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today announced an immediate allocation of RM10 million to assist Muar residents, particularly those from the B40 group. He said the allocation would be coordinated by the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) of the Prime Minister's Department, in collaboration with the Muar District Office, to ensure targeted assistance that meets the actual needs of the people. 'I have asked ICU to coordinate this. We will enhance support for the basic needs of the people, especially those from the B40 group. We will approve RM10 million immediately within the next week or two,' he said when officiating the launch of the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2025 Campaign at Dataran Tanjung Emas here today. Also present were Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and Information Department director-general Julina Johan. Anwar said the initiative is part of the Unity Government's commitment to ensuring that no group is left behind in national development, in line with the spirit of independence and principles of social justice that form the foundation of the nation's struggle. He also urged Malaysians to embrace the spirit of independence by flying the Jalur Gemilang as a symbol of national pride and unity. PM hits back at claims of neglect, says RM1.84b in projects prove federal commitment to Terengganu

KUALA TERENGGANU, July 12 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has asked the people of the state not to be influenced by baseless claims that the federal government is not doing any development for their welfare. He said in fact, a total of 445 programmes and projects with an allocation of RM1.836 billion have been approved in Terengganu under the Fifth Rolling Plan (RP5) Development Programmes/Projects of the 12th Malaysia Plan (MP12). He said this was an increase of RM239 million compared to last year, thus refuting claims by some quarters that no development was being done for the state. '..this is I announcing projects that are underway or have started to proceed. Sometimes it is slow (because we have to take into account) the issue of land acquisition, impact studies and suitability, but the approved (project) is RM1.836 billion. 'So if there are people giving talks in any village, claiming no projects, please explain the approved allocation of RM1.836 billion,' he said when speaking at the Closing Ceremony of the Terengganu Madani Rakyat (PMR) 2025 Programme at the Pasar Kedai Payang compound, here today. The Finance Minister said that among the important development projects currently underway for the people of Terengganu is the initiative to expand broadband internet coverage in districts such as Hulu Terengganu and Besut which will benefit more than 15,000 households. In addition, RM300 million has been allocated to upgrade the existing water distribution system which will increase piped water supply to 98 per cent by the end of this year. 'Then, RM2.243 billion has been allocated specifically for flood mitigation projects and estuary conservation and coastal erosion in Terengganu. 'I also discussed with the Menteri Besar that we (the federal and state governments) must find new technologies to prevent this erosion from continuing to occur so that preventive measures can be expedited,' he said. He said that all these are evidence of the commitment that the federal government also prioritises the people in this state regardless of the excessive accusations that do not benefit and result in continued tension between the state and federal governments. 'In this country, if there is cooperation and focus on important matters for the country, we will be safe but if we are still hanging around with negative campaigns, it will not help. For example, the accusation that we do not want to help the Malays or that the Islamic economy is currently challenged. '...but this is a programme, why did I choose Terengganu (as one of the locations for the event). Terengganu has more than 90 per cent Malays, but I didn't choose it because it's Malay alone, but because the state has recorded progress and excellence in education and other fields. 'So I hope we can listen but evaluate it well and don't make it an issue that doesn't benefit us,' he said. During the event, Anwar also witnessed the handover of a replica cheque for the allocation for road and slope maintenance on Terengganu's federal roads totalling RM158.6 million from the Ministry of Finance to the Ministry of Works. The three-day Terengganu PMR, which ends today, has become a strategic platform to unite the federal government, state governments, ministries, agencies and government-linked companies (GLCs) in delivering information, opportunities and services directly to the people. — Bernama

Record high 74% of Hong Kong pupils assigned to first choice secondary school

A record high of 74 per cent of Primary Six pupils in Hong Kong were assigned to their preferred secondary school in the central allocation system, with the sector attributing the 12 percentage point increase to the shrinking pupil numbers. Advertisement This year marks the highest successful allocation rate since the revamped system was implemented in 2007. It coincides with a notable decline in the number of pupils taking part in the secondary school places allocation system, which has reached an eight-year low of 48,011. The figure, announced by the Education Bureau on Monday, represents a decrease of 3,382 pupils, or 6.6 per cent, compared to last year – the largest drop recorded in 12 years. The majority of the pupils taking part in the system this year were born in 2013, a year that saw a drastic nearly 40 per cent reduction in births following the former Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying's imposition of a ban on pregnant Chinese women without a husband from Hong Kong giving birth in the city's hospitals. The proportion of pupils who secured their first choice was a sharp increase from 62 per cent last year, while those who were allocated their top three choices reached 91 per cent, also a record high since 2007. Advertisement There are two stages in the allocation of public secondary schools for pupils in Hong Kong. Those in the first stage are granted school places based on discretionary factors, such as academic and interview performance. They can apply directly to one or two schools, with the results released in March.
