Anwar announces RM10m aid for Muar B40 families, vows swift disbursement
He said the allocation would be coordinated by the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) of the Prime Minister's Department, in collaboration with the Muar District Office, to ensure targeted assistance that meets the actual needs of the people.
'I have asked ICU to coordinate this. We will enhance support for the basic needs of the people, especially those from the B40 group. We will approve RM10 million immediately within the next week or two,' he said when officiating the launch of the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2025 Campaign at Dataran Tanjung Emas here today.
Also present were Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and Information Department director-general Julina Johan.
Anwar said the initiative is part of the Unity Government's commitment to ensuring that no group is left behind in national development, in line with the spirit of independence and principles of social justice that form the foundation of the nation's struggle.
He also urged Malaysians to embrace the spirit of independence by flying the Jalur Gemilang as a symbol of national pride and unity.
Following the ceremony, the Prime Minister flagged off the Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang 2025 Convoy, comprising 88 land vehicles and 66 water transport assets, with over 300 participants.
The convoy will carry the national flag across the country, covering 88 checkpoints, namely 44 in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah (20), Sarawak (22) and two in the Federal Territory of Labuan, before concluding at Dataran Putrajaya, the venue of the National Day 2025 celebration, on Aug 31. — Bernama

Privatisation without governance is 'piratisation', says Anwar
PUTRAJAYA: Privatisation that ignores governance and accountability risks becoming "robbery by the minute," or what Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim described as "piratisation." Speaking at the launch of Multimedia University's (MMU) Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Engineering (FAIE) in Cyberjaya today, Anwar said Malaysia must not repeat past mistakes in privatisation as the country embraces digital transformation and artificial intelligence (AI). Drawing parallels with the global wave of privatisation in the 1980s under then-British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, he said Malaysia adopted the policy without proper processes, often handing major enterprises to politically connected companies. "We sometimes forget that privatisation without transparency and due process means we only privatise to benefit cronies and families. "Without good governance, the outcomes will only benefit a select few. For example, the privatisation of Malaysia Airlines was carried out non-transparently, costing billions, and only in the past two or three years has it managed to recover," he added. Anwar stressed that poor governance meant many companies expected to benefit the nation and its people instead collapsed, forcing the government to absorb huge debts. "And what was the result? Many of these companies, initially expected to benefit the nation and its people, eventually had to be propped up by the government due to massive losses — becoming a huge debt burden to be borne by the rakyat." He said this practice, once described by former Opposition Leader Lim Kit Siang as "piratisation," showed why principles of good governance must guide all reforms. "That is why, whether it's computerisation, digital transformation or AI, principles of good governance must always be upheld," Anwar said. He noted that the reminder comes ahead of the 13th Malaysia Plan, where governance has been identified as a central pillar alongside efforts to "raise the ceiling" of economic growth and "raise the floor" of inclusivity. "We must 'raise the ceiling' by enhancing the nation's technological capacity, while at the same time 'raise the floor' so that ordinary people also benefit," he said. Anwar added that without governance, efforts in digitalisation and AI risked widening inequality and fuelling corruption. Referring to management guru Peter Drucker, he noted that in some cases, government-run entities can even outperform privatised ones if integrity and accountability are upheld. "Privatisation is not a mystical law. Without proper governance, sound policies and a culture of integrity, it becomes exploitation rather than reform," he said. Also present at the launch were Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo and Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir.

Govt may add RM100 aid for university students in Budget 2026
CYBERJAYA: The government is prepared to evaluate an additional one-off RM100 aid for university students to ease their financial burdens. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed the proposal will be reviewed for Budget 2026, set for tabling in October. He addressed the suggestion during the Temu Anwar programme after a student representative from Multimedia University (MMU) raised the issue. Anwar noted that the government had earlier approved RM100 cash aid for all Malaysians aged 18 and above. 'I welcome the proposal by the student president and I will give it due consideration for the October budget,' he said. On living costs, Anwar reiterated that essential goods like cooking oil, chicken, eggs, and sugar remain among the region's most affordable. He emphasised that tackling poverty and easing public burdens remain his top priorities as prime minister. 'If asked what issue worries me most, I remain most concerned about hardcore poverty and the people's burdens,' he added. Anwar clarified that recent salary adjustments excluded ministers, deputies, and MPs to prioritise fiscal responsibility. He reaffirmed the need for transparent procurement processes to maximise national savings. The government's anti-leakage measures have reportedly recovered RM4 billion to RM5 billion in misappropriated funds. 'How much has been recovered by the Inland Revenue Board and MACC? It has reached RM4 billion, RM5 billion,' Anwar stated. He stressed that recovered funds are redirected to public welfare rather than political interests. 'Imagine, RM5 billion had gone to certain people illegally, but we are returning it to the people,' he said. - Bernama

Ramanan: Anwar scheduled to announce new initiative for Indian community tomorrow
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to announce several new initiatives under the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) for the benefit of the Indian community at the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Aug 19). Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Seri R Ramanan confirmed the matter during the wind-up session on the debate on the motion of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) at the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Aug 18). He said the new initiatives would have a greater impact on the socio-economic development of the Indian community and ensure they continue to be supported, benefiting from national development. "This step also reflects the Madani Government's continued determination to lift the role of the Indian community as a partner in the country's development through inclusive, progressive approaches based on comprehensive impact," he said.
