Aishwarya Rai Opts for Ornate Detailing in Handwoven Manish Malhotra Saree for Cannes Film Festival 2025
Aishwarya Rai attended the red carpet premiere of 'The History of Sound' on Wednesday during the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. The Bollywood actress joined the likes of such attendees as Elsa Hosk, who wore a custom remake of the mesh knit gown and the archive velvet satin cape seen at Mugler's Cirque d'Hiver fall 1995 collection. Rai opted for her own designer threads for the red carpet occasion. The actress styled a custom saree courtesy of designer Manish Malhotra. Malhotra recently collaborated with singer Coco Jones on her 2025 Met Gala debut custom ensemble. The Truth About the Rapid Weight Loss Treatment's 'Damaging' Side Effects 'When Aishwarya and I first spoke about Cannes, we both immediately said 'Saree,'' designer Manish Malhotra told WWD via e-mail. 'I was very sure that I wanted her to wear something handwoven, something that takes India's textile heritage to the global stage. We gravitated toward has a quiet power, a poetic elegance. The moment she tried the Banarasi saree, we knew it was the one.' Rai wore a handwoven Kadwa Banarasi handloom saree in a shade of ivory. The ornate piece was threaded with brocade motifs and real chandi (silver) zari. The ensemble also featured hints of rose gold and silver. Rai's look was layered with a tissue dupatta, bordered in gold and silver zardozi. To accessorize the look, Rai wore pieces of heirloom high jewelry courtesy of Manish Malhotra, as well. Pieces included over 500 carats of Mozambique rubies and uncut diamonds set in 18k gold. Accessories included a bevy of necklaces with ruby statement rings. 'When it came to jewelry, I chose rubies instead of the expected uncut diamonds or emeralds. The red offset the ivory beautifully, and the layered look felt delicate yet impactful. Aishwarya loved it the moment she tried it on,' Malhotra said. Rai's look was curated by styling team Allia and Nayaab. Her makeup, featuring bold brows, lined eyes and a bright red lip, was curated by artist Aditya Sharma. Rai's hair was styled straight and worn down, with styling provided by Stephane Lancien. Rai has been a mainstay on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet for several years. The actress previously styled looks by such designers and labels as Roberto Cavalli, Armani Privé and Ashi Studio, among others. '[Aishwarya Rai] once told me, 'Whenever I wear a saree at Cannes, it has to be with you.' That stayed with me,' Malhotra said. 'This look is deeply special, rooted in Indian craft, styled with intent, and carried with the grace and stature that only Aishwarya can bring.' The 2025 Cannes Film Festival concludes on Saturday. Films premiering at this year's festival include Wes Anderson's 'The Phoenician Scheme,' Julia Ducournau's 'Alpha' and Lynne Ramsay's 'Die, My Love.' Helen Mirren Brings the Drama in Badgley Mischka's Farewell Dress With Fascinator and Statement Necklace for Cannes Film Festival 2025 Red Carpet
Helen Mirren brought theatrical sensibility to the red carpet for the 'La Venue de l'Avenir' premiere during the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday. The Oscar-winning actress embraced statement accessories with nods to dark glamour. For the premiere, Mirren opted for a custom design courtesy of Badgley Mischka. The gown marked the final design from the fashion label's founders Mark Badgley and James Mischka. Established Incorporated announced in April the company set up a strategic joint venture with ACI Licensing to acquire Badgley Mischka, among other lifestyle brands. The ensemble was crafted with a form-fitting silhouette and included such exaggerated elements as sharp shoulders. At the waist, an aquamarine sash was added, with a bow at the back, and long flowing fabric to the red carpet. Along with the dress, accessories worn by 'The Queen' actress added to the overall theatricality of her attire. The actress paired the dress with a seafoam aquamarine and pearl necklace, which featured two strands connected to aquamarine gems in a tiered style with a pearl at the end. Mirren also wore pearl earrings to complement the necklace. Jewelry was provided by Margot McKinney. To complete her look, the actress added a black fascinator with sheer elements and a statement black flower by Karen Millen. Final touches on Mirren's look included shoes by Sole Bliss and a bag by Ahikoza. Mirren's look was curated by stylist and costume designer Lee Harris. With the acquisition of Badgley Mischka, along with such brands as C&C California and Kay Unger Design, founders Mark Badgley and James Mischka will step away from the brand they founded roughly 37 years ago in New York City. Badgley and Mischka are not affiliated with the new venture, but they will continue to appear on HSN through their affiliation with the Badgley Mischka dress licensee MJCLK. The 2025 Cannes Film Festival concludes on Saturday. Films premiering at this year's festival include Wes Anderson's 'The Phoenician Scheme,' Julia Ducournau's 'Alpha' and Lynne Ramsay's 'Die, My Love.' Cara Delevingne on L'Oréal, Miu Miu and Her Bold Black Wig in Cannes
CANNES, France — Cara Delevingne stepped into the role of coiffure chameleon for her first red carpet as part of the L'Oréal Paris family. She wore a Miu Miu gown Wednesday night and stunned with a jet-black, short-fringed and surprising hair transformation. Alas, it was a wig — all in good fun to mix classic couture with a twist. More from WWD L'Oréal Invests in Chinese Biotech Startup Veminsyn Lauren Sánchez Flashes Barely-there Silver Stilettos Beneath Oceanic Roberto Cavalli Gown at amfAR Cannes Heidi Klum's Stiletto Sandals Cut Through Sheer Layers of Textural Drama at the 2025 amfAR Cannes Gala 'I'm glad everyone was fooled,' she said the morning after. '[The gown] was very kind of Princess Cinderella, obviously gorgeous and classic. But I wanted to take a bit of an edge to that and do something a bit different, a bit Joan of Arc. I wanted to take a risk.' The slick, wet punk style was a definitive departure from her natural blond locks. 'It was really special to do something like that when you have such an incredible, iconic, historic stage like that red carpet,' Delevingne added. She described her Cannes debut as part of the L'Oréal Paris family with heartfelt sincerity. 'It's been incredible so far,' she said. 'Getting to meet all the other ambassadors, some of whom are friends…a lot of those women are such inspirations to me and people I've always looked up to.' Among them are Viola Davis and Helen Mirren, who were also in town with the brand. Davis is the juror for the Light on Women's Worth Award, which honors women directors of short and student films. The prize is now in its fifth year, and Davis will hand out its top prize at a ceremony Friday evening. 'There is still such a discrepancy between female and male directors. Highlighting women who wouldn't be seen otherwise, especially by someone like Viola Davis — who's such an incredible icon — needs to happen more,' Delevingne said. The beauty brand backs up those efforts, she said. 'L'Oréal do such a great job of continuing that legacy,' she said. 'It's all about sisterhood and empowering each other.' Delevingne remains passionate about her acting future, following a transformative run in 'Cabaret' on London's West End. 'It was the best thing I've ever done. It gave me so much, not only creative fulfillment, but a belief in myself,' she said. 'I've never felt more proud of something. It's funny, the more I gave to it, the more it gave back to me. 'The intensity of live theater is unmatched. Whatever happens on stage happens. There isn't a reshoot, there isn't an edit, there isn't control over it. It's just you are that person that day.' It wasn't her first time on stage, she recalled. 'One of my earliest memories was being on stage in a school nativity play,' she said. 'But this was definitely very different than that. As an expression, there is nothing like theater. I don't think anything will ever exist in the same way for me.' While upcoming projects remain under wraps — 'exciting things' was all she would divulge — Delevingne will remain risk-taking on the red carpet. 'I like to have an edge with things, playing with androgyny. I think taking risks with fashion is always fun,' she said. She doesn't approach it as a costume or armor but an expression of her creativity, adding: 'What you see is what you get.' Colman Domingo, Spike Lee and Duran Duran Hit the AmfAR Gala at Cannes Film Festival
ANTIBES, France — The South of France was popping on Thursday, with the Louis Vuitton show in Avignon and the Cannes Film Festival's biggest party, amfAR, at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes. Colman Domingo was wearing custom Valentino that flew straight out of his imagination, and he collaborated with the Valentino team to it bring to life. More from WWD Helen Mirren Brings the Drama in Badgley Mischka's Farewell Dress With Fascinator and Statement Necklace for Cannes Film Festival 2025 Red Carpet Lauren Sánchez Flashes Barely-there Silver Stilettos Beneath Oceanic Roberto Cavalli Gown at amfAR Cannes Heidi Klum's Stiletto Sandals Cut Through Sheer Layers of Textural Drama at the 2025 amfAR Cannes Gala 'I wanted to feel like a bird of paradise,' he said of his look. It was an embellished suit with a belted wrap jacket, lace socks and ballet flats with a bow. He accessorized it with a Boucheron ear cuff of brightly colored feathers. 'You've got to peacock a little bit here, because you have got to get the world's attention, but it goes toward this cause,' he said. The cause in question is fundraising for amfAR's research into a cure for HIV and AIDS, which has also advanced research that has supported treatments and vaccines for other viruses, such as COVID-19. Colman said that behind each look, he thinks about what he is representing, as well as balancing fashion. 'I like to tell stories with every outfit,' he said. He collaborated with Valentino creative director Alessandro Michele on the look. 'We create moments, I think. He's creating maximalistic, romantic moments, and we need them even more now. [Fashion] is a great response to the time, saying, 'No, don't be downhearted. Believe in fantasy, believe in color and joy and spirit.'' On stage, Domingo played host to a fashion show that featured pieces from houses including Alaïa, Balenciaga, Chanel, Dior, Prada and Saint Laurent, as well as emerging designers including Duran Lantink, Jacquemus and LaQuan Smith. The outfits on display sold jointly for 450,000 euros. A tent on the hotel's grounds was decked out in red lanterns and a raised runway. The fashion show, curated by Carine Roitfeld, had a James Bond theme. Models emerged onto the runway from a white circle, similar to the iconic Bond film opening sequence. Teri Hatcher, who played a Bond girl in 1997's 'Tomorrow Never Dies,' hit the runway in a sleek black gown. She hammed it up with her best Bond poses, and got the crowd energized to hype up the bidding. The 'Desperate Housewives' star has been involved with amfAR for several years, having attended events in the U.S., though it was her first time in Cannes. 'More than ever, especially in my country, we need to keep having great fundraisers like this to research this really devastating disease. So unfortunately, because they're cutting the research for different [diseases including] HIV, cancer, all of it's more important than ever,' she said. More than her runway walk, she was excited to see headliners Duran Duran. 'I'm gonna go right ahead and date myself and put myself back at my senior prom,' she said. 'They were, and still are, the music of my life.' Spike Lee has been riding the wave of strong reviews for 'Highest 2 Lowest,' which premiered at the French film festival Monday night. Lee presented star Denzel Washington an honorary Palme d'Or at the premiere. 'He's unparalleled,' he said. 'I've been coming to Cannes since 1986 and every time is wonderful. 'The cause is needed now more than ever. So my wife, Tonya, we're glad to be here to represent,' he said, noting that disease and health research funding in the U.S. is being cut by the current administration, which will results in additional deaths. 'So I think this is more important than ever.' Lee clarified that his chunky white-rimmed glasses were not from the A$AP Rocky collection for Ray-Ban, which was celebrated at a separate party in Cannes, but by eyewear maestro Jacques Marie Mage. 'I don't do the 'sunglasses at night' look,' he added. On stage, he auctioned off a walk-on part in his next film for 400,000 euros. A buyer purchased it for his companion, who is an aspiring actress, and Lee descended from the stage to shake her hand. Mariska Hargitay was also fresh off the premiere for her documentary 'My Mom Jayne,' in which she revealed she discovered her known father Mickey Hargitay was not her biological father. 'The ride has been deeply rewarding, deeply fulfilling, and a little bumpy, obviously, but just magnificent. I feel like I've been preparing for it for my whole life,' she said. The actress-turned-director was wearing a custom Patou gown with an embellished halter neck. Coco Rocha, who served as one of the event's cohosts, wore a sculptural Asian-inspired look from brand It-Spain. 'It gives me a little Galliano, back in the day when he used to work with origami,' she said as she posed up a storm in the dramatic red gown. Longtime amfAR supporter Adrien Brody, fresh off his second Oscar win, was not giving interviews. 'I appreciate you, but I've decided to stay quiet,' he said upon arriving with his girlfriend Georgina Chapman. On stage, the actor sold one of his own paintings, a collage portrait of Marilyn Monroe, and relayed that it was a statement on how women are judged in society. 'Women are so often objectified in media and social media, that they have to look beautiful and they are beautiful, but what is within them is what is most important in this world. And I want to honor that,' he said to the room, filled with top models and influencers. The painting represents a lesson to 'not let the superficiality of beauty dominate,' he added. The work sold for 375,000 euros. Other celebrity works included a painting from James Franco, who was also in attendance, which he said represented his early days in Los Angeles, and which sold for 325,000 euros. A photograph of Bono by Julian Lennon, signed by the U2 frontman, sold for 150,000 euros, while the priciest piece of the night was a painting from artist George Condo, which went for 1.15 million euros. Michelle Rodriguez was on hand to auction the Dodge Charger driven by Vin Diesel in the tenth installment of the 'Fast & Furious' franchise. She called it 'American-made muscle,' and it went for 475,000 euros. She was accompanied by longtime friend and Red Sea Film Foundation chief executive officer Mohammed Al Turki. The actress has stepped into producing and is using AI to help her with her scripts and work, she said, highlighting its importance in disease research as well. On the fashion front, Karolina Kurkova took to the stage to auction a pair of Chopard earrings with a total of 36.28 carats of yellow and white diamonds, which were sold for 400,000 euros. 'Every girl needs diamonds. Please, gentlemen, buy them for your wives or daughters. I know there are some daughters here,' she said to the age-diverse couples in the crowd. Auctioneer Simon de Pury praised Chopard copresident and artistic director Caroline Scheufele for her longtime support of amfAR. Taraji P. Henson commanded the stage as the host of the evening in a sweeping Gaurav Gupta gown. The host had to shush the boisterous crowd more than once to focus their attention on the items for sale. Ciara, who had changed up her look from the short bob she sported earlier on the red carept to long blonde locks, opened the musical performances, with Adam Lambert following with a trio of Queen songs. Duran Duran closed the night with some of their greatest hits, and the guitar John Taylor played on stage was signed by the members and auctioned off as a surprise last lot of the night. The instrument went for 25,000 euros to one baseball-capped amfAR regular – aka Mr. Leonardo DiCaprio – who demurred when asked to take to the stage. Other guests included Jeff Bezos and fiancée Lauren Sanchez, Kimberly Guilfoyle, Robin Thicke and Kevin Spacey, who walked the red carpet but stayed tableside and did not present on stage. Trophée Chopard Honoree Marie Colomb on Comedy, Cannes and Acting in English
CANNES, France — On the rooftop of the Hôtel Martinez, Marie Colomb is scrolling through photos of her bulldog — the same one she'd just been chatting about with Angelina Jolie moments before the Trophée Chopard dinner, which resulted in a charming onstage slip-up. The French actress was this year's recipient of the annual prize, presented by Jolie, who was serving as the ceremony's 'godmother'—though Colomb accidentally, and endearingly, thanked her as 'dog mother,' to the delight of the room. More from WWD Lauren Sánchez Flashes Barely-there Silver Stilettos Beneath Oceanic Roberto Cavalli Gown at amfAR Cannes Heidi Klum's Stiletto Sandals Cut Through Sheer Layers of Textural Drama at the 2025 amfAR Cannes Gala Cara Delevingne on L'Oréal, Miu Miu and Her Bold Black Wig in Cannes 'Just before she gave me the award, we talked about how being in the same field instantly creates a bond, so we talked about our dogs,' Colomb explained. Though she admits she was a little nervous before stepping onstage, Jolie's calming presence quickly put her at ease. 'It's in her way of being,' she said. 'I could see she was really grounded. She was incredibly kind and thoughtful. I think she's aware of being the star she is, and that's not always easy. She could sense we were nervous, but once you get past what she represents, there's just a human in front of you — simple and kind.' The honor was a heightened moment for the 29-year-old, who has already had two films premiere at Cannes — 2021's 'The Magnetics' and 2022's 'The Beasts' — although this was her first time being recognized for her full body of work, including her TV series 'Follow' and 'Culte.' 'It felt a bit surreal,' she said. 'I think I'll really process it when I'm back home with my boyfriend and my dog.' Colomb has earned acclaim for her emotionally rich dramatic roles, but she's currently leaning into comedy — a challenge she embraces. 'I really want to explore different genres. Comedy is incredibly hard. It's all about timing. If you're feeling stressed or not well, you can channel that into a dramatic role. But with comedy, you have to feel confident. Otherwise, it just doesn't land, and it shows.' Ultimately, she picks projects rooted in humanity. 'I'm drawn to films that, maybe it's cliché to say, are full of love. Stories about people. Sometimes it's comedy, sometimes drama, but they make me want to live,' she said. Raised in a small town in southwestern France, Colomb knew early on that acting was it for her. At just six years old, she penned a letter to her mother declaring her intention to be on stage and screen. 'It's cliché, but I fell in love with it then and never had a plan B,' she said. Though she hasn't yet taken on an English-language project, she's also up for that challenge. 'I know I'm capable, it's just a mental block. But if someone offered me a role in English tomorrow, I'd be working on it nine hours a day,' she said. She's also attuned to the shifts in the industry, particularly how global platforms have changed the game for independent films, which has been a hot topic at Cannes. 'There are many positives, but I don't yet have the hindsight to say how much. Still, even if we're not saving lives by making films, it does matter,' she remarked. 'In a world that's as complicated as ours, cinema can offer real comfort,' she added. 'It still influences how people are seen — minorities, different perspectives. It shapes the way we look at others.' Colomb is also embracing the fashion world, particularly as luxury houses continue investing in cinema. She's been a front row guest at Balenciaga, Chloé and Rabanne during Paris Fashion Week, and her appreciation of fashion is growing. 'At first, it was a world that really impressed me. It wasn't mine. It seemed superficial. And yes, there's that side to it,' she said. 'But lately, I've become genuinely interested in the artistry and craftsmanship. Like anything, once you look closely, there's a lot to admire. And let's be honest, it's also a business. But I love that brands are increasingly supporting film.' For the Trophée Chopard dinner, she wore a pink feathered Prada mini dress that she called an 'immediate, visual way to have fun.' Her personal style IRL is simpler: a white T-shirt, a short Prada skirt, and anything 'comfortable…and a little bit rockstar.' It's her first formal relationship with a brand, and she's enjoying the freedom it gives her to play with identity. 'It's like we say in France — style, we don't take it too seriously, you know?' she said, joking about the myth of 'effortless' French girl style that actually takes a lot of work behind the scenes. She's seen a shift in that aesthetic due to social media, plus the speeding up of the fashion cycle as entertainment. 'I do think fashion has taken up a lot more space recently,' she said. 'People see you first through what you wear — and it matters.'
