Law enforcement connects with Youngstown kids over fishing
NEW MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – It was an outdoor fishing adventure Friday for some Youngstown School kids.
The event is called 'Cops and Bobbers' because the kids were casting their lines with law enforcement officials.
The fourth and fifth graders from MLK Elementary enjoyed a day at the New Middletown Farmers & Sportsmen Club.
It's a collaboration with the Mahoning County Sheriff's Office and Youngstown Police Department, who hope to create a trusting bond with the kids moving forward.
'It is a good way to teach the kids that there is more to experience than just running around the streets when it comes summer and springtime, that there is more program out there for them. Obviously, hunting and fishing is something we all grew up with doing,' said Youngstown Police Officer Casey Kelly.
All the fishing gear used by the kids was donated by Walmart and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
