Kyle Shanahan reveals troubling injury update for 49ers' top wide receiver

The San Francisco 49ers' second week of training camp didn't get off to a great start on the injury front. Head coach Kyle Shanahan after Thursday's session provided some updates on a handful of players who have missed their last couple of practices. The most concerning news regards wide receiver Jauan Jennings who has been dealing with a calf injury since leaving Sunday's practice early. Shanahan said Jennings doesn't have a timetable for return. He also confirmed the current calf injury is in the same leg that cost him time in OTAs. Back-to-back injuries in the same calf is a major red flag, and it's understandable the 49ers aren't putting a timetable on Jennings's return. Rushing him back could lead to a more significant injury than a calf strain. Injuries have been a defining feature of the 49ers' receiving corps this offseason. They finally got Ricky Pearsall back after a hamstring injury cost him OTAs and the first few days of training camp. Jacob Cowing is still out with a hamstring issue and there's still no timetable for Brandon Aiyuk's return. The 49ers can't afford to have Jennings out for a significant stretch of the regular season, so it wouldn't be a surprise if they hold Jennings out until the regular season begins. 49ers comment on severity of Jauan Jennings' calf injury

San Francisco fans are anxious to get the news that fifth-year pro Jauan Jennings is back working in practice and seriously ramping up his return for the 2025 NFL season. But, 49ers fans will have to wait longer for that bit of good news. And until he's back suited up and catching the football, there will be a faction of the fan base that wonders if there's more to the story. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked on Monday if there is any concern from the coaching staff regarding the severity of Jennings' calf injury and if it could play out similarly to Christian McCaffrey's calf injury and Achilles tendonitis that morphed into much worse. "No. McCaffrey's was Achilles Tendonitis that had been bothering him for a while and never got better. Jauan is a calf that he missed all last training camp with. It is something that we don't think will be too serious, but it's bothering him now. Depending on how much he misses, I mean, I always want guys out there. It helps him, it helps the team. But, Jauan was alright last year too missing some time," Shanahan said. It's in line with the tone that Shanahan struck following the 49ers' preseason opener against the Denver Broncos on Saturday night. Shanahan was asked point blank if Jennings' absence is more about securing a new contract. "No, not at all. And this is actually why Jauan missed OTAs is because of his calf. It's the same injury he had last year during training camp, which made him miss a couple weeks during training camp last year. "We didn't get him until the end of training camp last year and it's the same thing on the MRI and it's the same thing he's going through. But, hopefully we'll get him back sooner than later," Shanahan said. Jennings led all 49ers wide receivers in receiving yardage last season with 975 yards on 77 catches with six touchdown grabs. As he enters the final year of his current deal, Jennings has reportedly requested a new contract from the 49ers this offseason. Dortmund's defensive worries deepen with Niklas Süle out for 2 months with a calf injury

DORTMUND, Germany (AP) — Borussia Dortmund's defensive worries deepened Monday with central defender Niklas Süle expected to be out for two months with a right calf injury sustained during a friendly game against Juventus. Süle suffered a muscle injury and had to go off just before halftime during Sunday's match against the Italian team. He had only replaced Mats Hummels in the 19th minute of the veteran defender's farewell game. The 36-year-old Hummels, who played for Roma last season after leaving Dortmund for the second time in 2024, was bidding an emotional farewell to the Dortmund fans. Dortmund was already without the injured Nico Schlotterbeck and Emre Can, exacerbating coach Niko Kovac's shortage of defenders before the team starts the season against Rot-Weiss Essen in the first round of the German Cup on Aug. 18. Dortmund starts its Bundesliga campaign at St. Pauli on Aug. 23. ___ AP soccer: The Associated Press

Seán Boyd to miss Shelbourne's Europa League tie against Rijeka

Seán Boyd has been ruled out of Shelbourne's enormous Europa League qualifier on Tuesday against Croatian champions Rijeka with a calf injury. Boyd started the first-leg in Rijeka last week but the 27-year-old had to be replaced by John Martin after 19 minutes. Martin scored the winner in a famous 2-1 result that means Shelbourne only need a draw at Tolka Park to secure group stage football. 'Kick in the calf [in Croatia] that swelled up,' confirmed Joey O'Brien, the Shelbourne manager. 'Strange one. He is finding it hard to walk and with the quick turnaround he won't be available. 'He started the game really well last week. John Martin came on and done really well. I keep going back to the strength of the squad. That was an example of it.' READ MORE Martin scored a second header in as many days to secure a 2-2 draw with Bohemians at Tolka Park on Saturday. Progress from the Europa League third qualifying round, to face the winners of POAK (Greece) or Wolfsberger (Austria) in a play-off would guarantee O'Brien's team group stage football this season as they will be redirected to the Uefa Conference League if they lose the Europa play-off. If Rijeka reverse the 2-1 deficit at Tolka, Shels will face the winners of Linfield (Northern Ireland) and Vikingur in a two-legged Conference League play-off on August 21st and 28th. Progress to the Europea League proper would earn the League of Ireland champions at least €4.31 million in prize money. That figure drops to €3.17 million for reaching the Conference League.
