Bills coach Sean McDermott anticipates RB James Cook will resume practicing after weeklong `hold-in'
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott anticipates James Cook will practice Tuesday in what would be the running back's first session since beginning his contract standoff by declining to participate on Aug. 3. McDermott based his expectation on Cook practicing on conversations he had with the fourth-year player. 'Things have changed and yes, I've had a conversation with James, and the information we're getting is he is moving in the right direction,' McDermott said before practice. Without getting into detail on the reason behind Cook's decision, the coach said: 'The most important thing is he is expected to practice and I'm confident that's going to happen.' McDermott said 'it was too early to go there,' when asked whether Cook's expected return to practice represented progress in contract talks. Cook, the NFL's co-leader with 16 touchdowns rushing last season, is conducting a 'hold-in' by being with the team but refusing to practice in an escalating bid to secure a contract extension on the final year of his rookie deal. After practicing fully during the Bills' first eight sessions of training camp, Cook began his 'hold-in' on Aug. 3 by watching practice wearing a white sweatsuit along the sideline. He then missed three more practices, the last two without being in attendance. On Saturday, Cook suited up and took part in pre-game warmups but declined to play in the Bills' preseason-opening 34-25 loss to the New York Giants. He watched the game in his uniform with sunglasses and a woolen hat from the sideline. Cook shook his head no in declining to speak to reporters when leaving the locker room following the game. Although Cook posted a note on social media in February suggesting he is seeking to make $15 million a season, there's a dispute over whether that was his camp's initial stance. It's unclear how far apart they are on what's expected to be a three-year contract. Cook's current asking price ranges somewhere between $11 to $12.5 million in guaranteed money. ___ AP NFL:

Chiefs' Chris Jones drops bold take on Cowboys, Micah Parsons contract issue
Chiefs' Chris Jones drops bold take on Cowboys, Micah Parsons contract issue originally appeared on The Sporting News The national storyline sweeping the NFL is Micah Parsons and the Dallas Cowboys' contract standoff. On Monday, another premier defender in the Kansas City Chiefs, Chris Jones, was asked about the situation. Even though Parsons requested a trade out of Dallas, Jones spoke with Kay Adams on the latest episode, "Up & Adams," and shared his thoughts on the situation, seeing it from both the business and player side of the standoff. "It's frustration on both sides," Jones told Adams. "It's probably frustrating for Jerry with everything that's going on and then the contracts he's recently given out as an owner." "When you're looking at it from a business standpoint, it's like, I give all these guys contracts, and it doesn't go as well as he wanted it to go. Then you look at it from a player standpoint who goes out there day in and day out and puts their life on the line and do the best they can for an organization. I'm quite sure they'll get it worked out." Even though Parsons requested a trade, the Chiefs' star doesn't think it will happen because he loves the city, and the fans love him back. MORE:Chiefs' Chris Jones offers heartfelt reaction to pursuing franchise milestone "I don't see Micah playing anywhere else other than Dallas," Jones added. "I think Dallas loves Micah. I think Micah loves Dallas, and I think Jerry Jones will get it worked out. The same thing happened with Dak, you know what I mean? The back and forth, and they eventually got it worked out, which he became the highest-paid quarterback, right?" Time is running out for the Cowboys and Parsons, with only two more preseason games before they play Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles to open up the 2025 NFL season. Somehow, they will have to find a way to work things out or Dallas could be in trouble.

James Cook warms up but declines to play in Bills preseason opener as contract standoff continues
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Bills coach Sean McDermott was able to convince running back James Cook to suit up and take a couple of handoffs in pregame warmups on Saturday. When it came to having him actually play in Buffalo's preseason opener against the New York Giants, Cook declined as part of a contract standoff now reaching its first full week. 'James and I had a good conversation yesterday,' McDermott said following a 34-25 loss. 'So he warmed up, but at this point, due to the situation and position he's in, he's not willing to play. So that's where we're at. Again, it was a good conversation, but really no change overall.' Cook, the NFL's co-leader with 16 touchdowns rushing last season, is conducting a "hold-in" by being with the team but refusing to practice in an escalating bid to secure a contract extension on the final year of his rookie deal. After practicing fully during the Bills first eight sessions of training camp, the fourth-year player declined to participate on Aug. 3 in watching practice wearing a white sweatsuit along the sideline. He's since missed three more practices, the last two without being in attendance. Cook then made a surprise appearance in taking the field during warmups about 90 minutes before kickoff Saturday. Suited up in a helmet and Bills uniform, he worked out with the running backs in the end zone before taking a couple of handoffs. Come game time, Cook took the field with his teammates, but without his helmet and watched the start of the game wearing sunglasses and a woolen cap. Cook shook his head no in declining to speak to reporters in leaving the locker room following the game. McDermott showed hints of frustration when asked a third question about Cook and whether he anticipates the player returning to practice next week. 'Let's just move on. We can talk about the guys who played. I think that's the right thing to do and fair thing to do right now,' McDermott said. 'James' situation is James' situation. Let's talk about the team.' Though Cook posted a note on social media in February suggesting he is seeking to make $15 million a season, there's a dispute over whether that was his camp's initial stance. It's unclear how far apart they are on what's expected to be a three-year contract. Cook's current asking price ranges somewhere between $11 to $12.5 million in guaranteed money. ___ AP NFL:
