James Cook warms up but declines to play in Bills preseason opener as contract standoff continues

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Bills coach Sean McDermott was able to convince running back James Cook to suit up and take a couple of handoffs in pregame warmups on Saturday.
When it came to having him actually play in Buffalo's preseason opener against the New York Giants, Cook declined as part of a contract standoff now reaching its first full week.
'James and I had a good conversation yesterday,' McDermott said following a 34-25 loss. 'So he warmed up, but at this point, due to the situation and position he's in, he's not willing to play. So that's where we're at. Again, it was a good conversation, but really no change overall.'
Cook, the NFL's co-leader with 16 touchdowns rushing last season, is conducting a 'hold-in' by being with the team but refusing to practice in an escalating bid to secure a contract extension on the final year of his rookie deal.
After practicing fully during the Bills first eight sessions of training camp, the fourth-year player declined to participate on Aug. 3 in watching practice wearing a white sweatsuit along the sideline.
He's since missed three more practices, the last two without being in attendance.
Cook then made a surprise appearance in taking the field during warmups about 90 minutes before kickoff Saturday. Suited up in a helmet and Bills uniform, he worked out with the running backs in the end zone before taking a couple of handoffs.
Come game time, Cook took the field with his teammates, but without his helmet and watched the start of the game wearing sunglasses and a woolen cap.
Cook shook his head no in declining to speak to reporters in leaving the locker room following the game.
McDermott showed hints of frustration when asked a third question about Cook and whether he anticipates the player returning to practice next week.
'Let's just move on. We can talk about the guys who played. I think that's the right thing to do and fair thing to do right now,' McDermott said. 'James' situation is James' situation. Let's talk about the team.'
Though Cook posted a note on social media in February suggesting he is seeking to make $15 million a season, there's a dispute over whether that was his camp's initial stance.
It's unclear how far apart they are on what's expected to be a three-year contract. Cook's current asking price ranges somewhere between $11 to $12.5 million in guaranteed money.

FOX Sports' Joel Klatt breaks down expectations for Colorado football in 2025

The Colorado Buffaloes have improved in back-to-back seasons under head coach Deion Sanders and almost appeared in the College Football Playoff last year. Although Colorado lost a fair amount of their offensive talent, including the likes of Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders, to the NFL, Colorado and Coach Prime still expect to compete this upcoming season. Many college football fans and analysts have written off Colorado for the 2025 season, citing that the Buffs lost too much talent. FOX Sports analyst and former Colorado quarterback broke down what he expects from this year's Buffaloes team and if a potential playoff run could be on the horizon in Boulder. "On the field, it's been two straight years that they've improved in the win column pretty drastically," Klatt said on "The Joel Klatt Show". "They went plus-three and then plus-five in the win column the last two years. 9-4 a year ago. But, you've got to replace your quarterback, Shedeur Sanders. Coach Prime has never been the head coach of a team that didn't have Shedeur Sanders as its quarterback. How does that work out? We're not totally sure." The Big 12 has arguably some of the best overall quarterback play in any conference (the SEC might top it with more star power) heading into the 2025 season. Colorado will face some tough matchups this year, playing in a stout Big 12 conference. "You also have to replace the do-everything Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter," Klatt continued. "Do you have someone who can do that? No. Obviously not. But, I do know that Colorado has gotten better in the foundational areas of their program that those two players [Sanders and Hunter] masked the last couple of years. They got much better on the offensive and defensive line. They were first in sacks defensively a year ago, but unfortunately, they were last in sacks given up on the offensive side. I think that will improve." "There is a standard at Colorado. They've improved from 124th-ranked scoring defense in 2023 to 42nd in 2024. Rob Livingston has done an excellent job as their defensive coordinator, but they're gonna have to replace too many players. So that's why I did not pick them [as a CFP party crasher], plus they have a tough schedule." Klatt gives some tough love to his former school and believes it will be more of a rebuilding year in Boulder. Although they've gotten better elsewhere on the field, in Klatt's view, they've lost too many significant contributors at a variety of positions. Jaguars activate DT Maason Smith

Defensive tackle Maason Smith is set to start practicing with the Jaguars. Smith was placed on the physically unable to perform list at the start of training camp due to an undisclosed injury and the Jaguars announced that he has been activated on Thursday. Smith was a second-round pick last season and started five of the 11 games he played for Jacksonville. He had 17 tackles, three sacks, and three passes defensed during his rookie season. The Jaguars have Smith listed as a second-string defensive tackle on their depth chart. Dolphins sign OL Yodny Cajuste

The Dolphins made a change to their offensive line on Thursday. They have signed tackle Yodny Cajuste and placed Germain Ifedi on injured reserve. Cajuste was a Patriots third-round pick in 2019 and he dealt with injuries in his first two NFL seasons. He played 17 games and made five starts over the next two seasons, but has not seen any regular season action over the last two years. He spent time with the Jets and Giants, but landed on injured reserve before being released each year. Ifedi signed with the Dolphins on August 3 while dealing with a number of injuries on their offensive line. Austin Jackson, Liam Eichenberg, and Bayron Matos have all been out of action this summer.
