Judge to decide fate of ex-world junior players in sex assault trial after jury discharged

Proceedings are back underway after the lunch break and defence lawyer Anna Zhang, who represents Michael McLeod, is cross-examining Steenbergen. Zhang asks Steenbergen about his time at Jack's bar. He confirms the woman he saw with McLeod in the bar was the same woman he saw in the hotel room where the alleged assaults occurred. He also agrees with a statement he made in 2018 — that the woman was 'hanging off' of McLeod — and agreed with Zhang's characterization that she was 'fawning' over him and was expressing interest in him. The former hockey player also agreed with Zhang that there was nothing 'unusual' about her demeanour and she wasn't 'falling over' in terms of her level of intoxication.

Cross-examinations done after tense day at sex assault trial of ex-world junior hockey players

The Latest E.M., the complainant, spent seven days under intense cross-examination by the defence teams. The Crown will have the opportunity to ask her to clarify anything that came up during questioning. Today, a defence lawyer suggested E.M. had 'bolstered the narrative' about how much she drank on the night of the alleged assaults and accused her of seeking attention from the hockey players. During a number of terse exchanges, E.M. repeatedly denied both allegations. The accused — Cal Foote, Dillon Dubé, Alex Formenton, Carter Hart and Michael McLeod — have all pleaded not guilty. WARNING: Court proceedings include graphic details of alleged sexual assault and might affect those who have experienced sexual violence or know someone who's been affected.

Diddy trial live updates: Trial returns for day five - after Cassie questioned on texts before 'freak offs'

The first day of Casandra Ventura's cross-examination by defence lawyers for Sean "Diddy" Combs has ended. After a day and a half of questioning by the prosecution, it was the turn of the rapper's team to put questions to his ex-girlfriend of more than a decade, the singer better known as Cassie. Here's a summary of what we heard in court: Combs's defence lawyer Anna Estevao began with questions about their relationship, asking Cassie if she loved the rapper and if she knew a version of him the public didn't - to which she said yes; Text messages between the couple, who were together for around 11 years from 2007, were the focus of much of the hearing today; Combs called her "babygirl" and said "I love you so much it makes me cry" in messages from 2009, while Cassie said "I love you so much I can't wait till we don't care anymore"; Questioning then turned to the "freak offs" we have heard so much about at the trial so far - sessions during which Diddy paid male escorts to have sex with Cassie while he watched; Sexually explicit messages showed her express enthusiam about the freak offs she has alleged she was forced into; "Can't wait," Cassie said in one text message, talking about taking part in a freak off; in another message, Combs told her he was "horny" and she replied: "Omg I was just about to text you the same thing"; But in a later message she said a freak off had made her feel "grimy" and "dirty"; Diddy's lawyers painted his sexual preferences as part of a "swingers" lifestyle that has been mentioned previously at trial, saying people might not agree with it but it does not make him guilty of sex trafficking; Cassie's relationship with Kid Cudi and Diddy's with Kim Porter, the late mother of four of his children, were discussed, with Cassie admitting she was jealous of Kim; Cassie alleged Diddy was "addicted to opiates and used ecstasy, MDMA and cocaine" and recalled an occasion where he overdosed on opiates at the Playboy Mansion; The witness also told the court there were never any drugs in the baby oil used during freak offs after Combs was accused in a lawsuit last year of spiking the lubricant with GHB; Away from the questioning, a notable moment came when Judge Arun Subramanian became frustrated with Diddy's lawyers over how long they will cross-examine Cassie, saying they should get a day and a half to question her - the same time the prosecution had. "In what universe did you not understand this is what was going to happen?" he said. For full details, scroll down through this page to catch up on what happened in court as it happened or read our full story here: Cassie will return to court tomorrow for a fourth day of questioning - and we'll be back to bring you all the latest.

Diddy trial live updates: Cassie Ventura faces more cross-examination in Sean Combs's sex-trafficking case

Today will be the fourth day of Cassie Ventura's testimony. We expect her cross-examination to take much of the day, followed by a rebuttal from prosecutors. Both sides reached a tentative agreement to wrap up the star witness's testimony by lunch, given that Ventura is in the late stages of her pregnancy, but the defense has said they could run longer. While Judge Arun Subramanian bristled at the idea, there is good reason to let the testimony run its course. Ventura is a key witness and any attempt to truncate testimony could create grounds for an appeal.
