Former Bengals DT Josh Tupou signs with Colts, reunites with ex-Bengals DC Lou Anarumo
The Indianapolis Colts announced they've signed free agent and former Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Josh Tupou, reuniting him with former Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo. Tupou played in three games for the Baltimore Ravens in 2024. He had two tackles during the Ravens' 35-34 win against Cincinnati in Week 10. Tupou played in 65 games with 23 starts over six seasons with the Bengals. The Bengals are scheduled to host the Colts in a preseason game August 23. Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered head and neck injuries and was carted off the field after Tupou's sack during the Bengals' win against Miami in 2022. Tupou signed with the Bengals as an undrafted free agent in May 2017. Anarumo was fired in January after six seasons with the Bengals. Report points to another possible reason for Christian Wilkins release
If you've been watching and/or reading closely, you may have noticed a hint or two that the release of Raiders defensive tackle Christian Wilkins may have related to something other than a dispute over his lingering foot injury. Or, more accurately, that the Raiders could try to point to something other than a disagreement over how to repair the injury to justify not paying him more than $35.2 million in remaining guaranteed money. While the specifics have yet to leak, there's definitely something dangling. In the media ecosystem, some junk that has been making the rounds. Something that has yet to be properly fleshed out for reliable reporting. Josina Anderson recently posted an article that contains an even stronger indication as to the "something else" that could become an issue. "Some league sources believe an incident involving a teammate may have factored in-part into the Raiders' fatigue and release of defensive tackle Christian Wilkins, beyond the management of his foot injury as the reported predominant cause," Anderson wrote. "The Raiders have not officially confirmed an incident or a complaint involving Wilkins and a teammate, while another direct league source confirmed awareness of a situation in which 'Christian (was) playing around.'" One key as to whether that alleged incident will become a factor in the legal fight is whether the Raiders released Wilkins for something like 'personal conduct that has adversely affected' the Raiders. That's how the Ravens framed the release of safety Earl Thomas in 2020, in an effort to avoid his otherwise guaranteed salary. Remember, a "full guarantee" isn't. It means that the player is guaranteed to receive the money if he's released due to injury, skill, or the salary cap. He can, in theory, be released for other reason(s) that would provoke such a move — including 'personal conduct that has adversely affected' the team.

Raiders claim veteran defensive tackle off waivers after cutting ties with Christian Wilkins
The Las Vegas Raiders added a defensive tackle to the roster on Friday after releasing Christian Wilkins on Thursday. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Raiders claimed Keondre Coburn off waivers. "Raiders claimed DT Keondre Coburn via waivers from the Titans," Schefter wrote. Coburn played 15 games for the Tennessee Titans in 2024, tallying 14 tackles. The 25-year-old began his career with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2023. After being waived by the Titans on Thursday, Coburn finds a new home in Las Vegas. The Texas product could see some playing time on the Raiders' defensive line with Wilkins no longer in the fold. Wilkins was released by Las Vegas, as the team wasn't happy with how he was approaching his rehab from a Jones fracture. Las Vegas also voided the remaining guarantees in his deal. "Due to how Wilkins treated the rehab from his foot injury he suffered last season, the Raiders voided the remaining $35.2 million of guaranteed money left on Wilkins contract last month and today, Wilkins filed a grievance with the NFLPA," Schefter wrote. With Wilkins out and Coburn in, the interior of the Raiders' defensive line will look a bit different in 2025. MORE:Raiders starting cornerback battle gets major update from Pete Carroll

Jets battle at DT opposite Quinnen Williams one to watch at training camp
The New York Jets are entering training camp with question marks at defensive tackle. Superstar interior defender Quinnen Williams needs an effective partner next to him. That position battle will be determined by training camp as the depth chart starts forming. Last season, it was Javon Kinlaw and Solomon Thomas who played the most snaps opposite Williams inside. Both were on one-year contracts, and neither player was retained this offseason. Kinlaw cashed in via a three-year, $45 million contract with the Washington Commanders in free agency, and Thomas signed a two-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys. Advertisement The initial favorite to replace them is Derrick Nnadi. New general manager Darren Mougey signed Nnadi to a one-year contract this offseason. The experienced defensive tackle is a nine-year pro who has played a rotational role for the Kansas City Chiefs throughout his entire career, appearing in 115 games and winning three Super Bowls. Some of the other intriguing options inside include Phidarian Mathis and Leonard Taylor III. Mathis was a 2022 second-round pick of the Commanders who didn't meet expectations in Washington. He suffered several injuries in D.C., and was claimed off waivers by the Jets in December. Taylor showed promise last season as a rookie undrafted free agent who played his way into the lineup. And then there's Byron Cowart and Jay Tufele. Tufele is a nose tackle who's bounced around the league, and Cowart is a veteran journeyman who most recently played for the Chicago Bears. Nnadi offers a veteran presence next to Williams. Taylor flashed upside last season, and Mathis is an intriguing bounce-back project with untapped potential and talent. It'll be worth monitoring the position battle at defensive tackle throughout training camp.
