Barca's Ter Stegen to be out for about three months due to back surgery

dpa Madrid Barcelona's Germany goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is set to be sidelined for months, after he confirmed on Thursday that he will have to undergo another back surgery. 'Today is a personally difficult day for me,' the 33-year-old wrote onX, announcing that he expects to be out for about three months. 'Emotionally, it hurts a lot not being able to support the team during this time. Fortunately, the rehabilitation is manageable and the road back is clear,'ter Stegen said. 'Physically and athletically, I feel in very good shape, although unfortunately I am not free from pain,' he wrote. 'After intensive discussions with the FC Barcelona medical team and external experts, the quickest and safest way for me to fully recover is through back surgery.' Ter Stegen had been training away from the team last week due to back problems. This was originally believed to be a reaction to having been told that he would be only third choice behind newly signed Joan García and Wojciech Szcz?sny. Ter Stegen has been linked with a transfer as he will also need playing time to retain his status as Germany's number one in the run-up to next year's World Cup. A number of clubs ranging from Manchester City and Chelsea to AC and Inter Milan as well as Monaco are said to be interested in ter Stegen. Back surgery and the following rehabilitation could however complicate a summer transfer. Ter Stegen already had back surgery in December 2023 and missed three months. He was also sidelined for many months last season with a severe knee injury.

Guardiola wants to bring Ter Stegen to Man City: Reports

dpa Madrid Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola wants to bring Germany goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to his team, according to several media reports. Ter Stegen, currently at Barcelona, is Guardiola's preferred candidate to replace current starting keeper Ederson, who is flirting with a move to Saudi Arabia or the Serie A, the newspaper El Nacional said on Thursday. According to the reports, first talks over the transfer have already been held. 'Guardiola appreciates Ter Stegen's style of play and experience, especially his qualities in building up the game, his tactical intelligence and his calmness in goal - all qualities that fit perfectly with his style,' El Nacional wrote. Last week, Spanish newspapers said that Ter Stegen is to be only the third-choice goalkeeper at Barcelona in the upcoming season. The Sport newspaper said that coach Hansi Flick has already told the German that Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny are the first two options ahead of him. Szczesny stood in for Ter Stegen after the latter suffered a major knee injury in September and was sidelined for about seven months. The Mundo Deportivo newspaper, meanwhile, said that Flick isn't even counting on the German goalkeeper for the new season. Ter Stegen reportedly feels at home in Barcelona and in principle wants to fulfil his contract until 2028. However, due to the 2026 World Cup, he can't afford to spend a season on the bench and risk losing his starting position at the Germany national team. As Barcelona started the pre-season preparations, Ter Stegen has only completed individual sessions in the fitness room. The official reason for his absence from team training is back issues. Chelsea, Manchester United, Galatasaray and Monaco are reportedly interested in signing Ter Stegen.

Jota thought to have been driving before fatal crash: Spanish police

PA Media/dpa Madrid Diogo Jota is thought to have been driving when he and his brother Andre Silva died in a car crash last week, Spanish police have said. The Liverpool footballer and father-of-three was killed alongside his brother, also a footballer, after the Lamborghini they were travelling in burst into flames following a suspected tyre blowout last Thursday in Zamora, Spain. A spokesperson for the Guardia Civil of Zamora told the PA news agency on Tuesday that tests being carried out by its traffic division showed Jota was driving the car at the time. The spokesperson added that the car was thought to be travelling above the speed limit on the road, which local media report is 120 kilometres per hour. The spokesperson said: 'The expert report is being carried out and finished, where among other things they are studying the marks (tread) left by one of the wheels of the vehicle. 'Everything also points to a possible high excess of speed over the permitted speed of the road. 'All the tests carried out for the moment point to the fact that the driver of the vehicle was Diogo Jota.' The report has not yet been finalized but will be handed over to the court in the town of Puebla de Sanabria, Zamora. Pictures of the aftermath of the crash showed debris scattered along the side of the road including what appeared to be charred parts of the vehicle. Footballers, family and fans gathered for the funeral of the brothers which took place in their native Portugal on Saturday. Jota's long-term partner Rute Cardoso, whom he had married just 11 days before the accident, was in attendance, as were his parents. Liverpool report for pre-season training Liverpool's players have reported back for pre-season training at the club's training centre following Diogo Jota's funeral on Saturday. Some of Arne Slot's squad had been scheduled to return for pre-season training on Friday, but the club delayed their return following the accident. Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, Conor Bradley and Wataru Endo were among the players pictured arriving at the training ground on Tuesday. Liverpool's first pre-season friendly is scheduled for Sunday against Preston at Deepdale, but the Premier League champions have yet to announce whether the game will go ahead. The Reds, who will play FA Cup winners Crystal Palace in the Community Shield on August 10, are also scheduled to face AC Milan in Hong Kong and J1 League side Yokohama in Japan at the end of this month.

Brazil-bound Ancelotti focussing only on ‘spectacular adventure' Real

dpa Madrid Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said on Tuesday he is only focussing on the final three matches of his 'spectacular adventure' at Real Madrid before becoming Brazil national team coach. The Brazilian federation CBF said that Italian Ancelotti would take over the ailing Selecao from May 26, the day after the end of the La Liga season, and lead them to the 2026 World Cup. Real won the league and a record extending 15th Champions League title last year but are set to come up empty-handed this term. Sunday's 4-3 defeat against Barcelona saw them slip seven points behind their big rivals with three matches left. Barca will clinch the title either if Real fail to beat Mallorca on Wednesday or if they defeat Valladolid on Thursday. Ancelotti told reporters on Tuesday that the Brazil job will be 'a great challenge' but that his only concern for now is ending the season in the best possible way with Real. 'I want to bring it to a good end. I must first think about the days that remain here,' he said. 'Because of the big respect I have for the club, the fans and the players I am fully concentrated on what I have to do in the final stage of this spectacular adventure.' Ancelotti had a contract until 2026 at Real but there had been speculation for weeks that his days were numbered in a season that he said didn't go well 'for many reasons.' But he insisted he was not leaving with 'a feeling of frustration. 'If someone had told me at my arrival that I would win 11 titles with Real Madrid I would have signed that immediately,' he said. 'I had a great time and I believe that everyone here had a great time. I never had a problem with the club. I have the club in my heart and will continue to do so.' Ancelotti, 65, coached Real 2015-2017 and again since 2021, with Sunday's Clasico his 350th game in charge. He is the only coach to win titles in all five European top leagues of England, Germany, Italy, France and Spain. Real are yet to make an official announcement of any kind on the coaching situation which doesn't bother him. 'Real Madrid will make a statement when they think the time is right for a statement,' he said. Former Real player Xabi Alonso, who played under Ancelotti in 2013-14, is widely tipped as Ancelotti's successor. Alonso last week announced his exit at Germany's Bayer Leverkusen, who he led to a historic unbeaten Bundesliga and German Cup double last year. 'I like Xabi a lot. I have no advice because he has all the tools to be a big coach in the future,' Ancelotti said.
