Jota thought to have been driving before fatal crash: Spanish police

Diogo Jota is thought to have been driving when he and his brother Andre Silva died in a car crash last week, Spanish police have said.
The Liverpool footballer and father-of-three was killed alongside his brother, also a footballer, after the Lamborghini they were travelling in burst into flames following a suspected tyre blowout last Thursday in Zamora, Spain.
A spokesperson for the Guardia Civil of Zamora told the PA news agency on Tuesday that tests being carried out by its traffic division showed Jota was driving the car at the time.
The spokesperson added that the car was thought to be travelling above the speed limit on the road, which local media report is 120 kilometres per hour.
The spokesperson said: 'The expert report is being carried out and finished, where among other things they are studying the marks (tread) left by one of the wheels of the vehicle.
'Everything also points to a possible high excess of speed over the permitted speed of the road.
'All the tests carried out for the moment point to the fact that the driver of the vehicle was Diogo Jota.'
The report has not yet been finalized but will be handed over to the court in the town of Puebla de Sanabria, Zamora.
Pictures of the aftermath of the crash showed debris scattered along the side of the road including what appeared to be charred parts of the vehicle.
Footballers, family and fans gathered for the funeral of the brothers which took place in their native Portugal on Saturday.
Jota's long-term partner Rute Cardoso, whom he had married just 11 days before the accident, was in attendance, as were his parents.

pre-season training
Liverpool's players have reported back for pre-season training at the club's training centre following Diogo Jota's funeral on Saturday.
Some of Arne Slot's squad had been scheduled to return for pre-season training on Friday, but the club delayed their return following the accident.
Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, Conor Bradley and Wataru Endo were among the players pictured arriving at the training ground on Tuesday.
Liverpool's first pre-season friendly is scheduled for Sunday against Preston at Deepdale, but the Premier League champions have yet to announce whether the game will go ahead.
The Reds, who will play FA Cup winners Crystal Palace in the Community Shield on August 10, are also scheduled to face AC Milan in Hong Kong and J1 League side Yokohama in Japan at the end of this month.

Need to take matches overseas has dissipated: Premier League CEO
PA Media/dpa London The Premier League's need to take matches overseas to boost its global appeal has 'dissipated' since the idea of a 39th match round abroad was first floated in 2008, top-flight chief executive Richard Masters has said. Spain's La Liga and the Italian Serie A are taking steps to stage a domestic match each in the United States and Australia respectively in the coming season as those leagues seek further exposure. However, Masters believes the Premier League has gone global by other means. 'Whether (new proposals to play Spanish and Italian matches overseas) will actually happen hasn't changed our view about matches abroad,' he told Sky Sports News on Wednesday. 'We did look at the 39th game way back when, with lots of controversy. I recall that very clearly. 'Our objective at the time, when thinking about it, was to help grow the Premier League around the world. 'And we've been able to do that through different means, through brilliant broadcast partnerships, through digital technology, investing in other areas, like the Summer Series tournament we've just had in the US, and now the Premier League is a genuinely global league. 'There are billions of people who will be tuning in over the course of the next the next nine months to watch Premier League action. So we've achieved that objective by different means, that necessity has dissipated.' Villarreal and Barcelona are keen to play their scheduled match just before Christmas in Miami. The Spanish football federation has given its approval but it will also require the green light from the European confederation UEFA and the North American confederation CONCACAF. It is understood UEFA is yet to receive a request. Defender Cristian Romero named new Tottenham captain

Son Heung-min had worn the armband for the last two seasons and lifted the Europa League in May as Spurs ended their 17-year wait for silverware. However, Son's departure to Los Angeles FC earlier this month meant new head coach Thomas Frank was on the lookout for another leader and he has turned to Romero, who started as captain in the Europa League final win over Manchester United. 'I had a good conversation with Cuti Romero and he's going to be our captain,' Frank told the official club website. 'He was very honoured and very happy about it. It's a big thing and should be to lead this wonderful club out on the pitch, not just for this Super Cup, but also throughout the season. 'I think he has all the right qualities. He leads from his behaviour on the pitch, driving the team forward in every way and outside the pitch he's always pushing the team. 'I want a leadership group as well. Of course, one will wear the armband and be the captain, but I would like to have as many leaders as possible, four to five in the leadership group who can help, because it's the same with me, I can't do everything on my own and need a superb coaching staff around me. 'I will name that leadership group after the window to give me time to assess everything.' Romero is only Tottenham's third captain of the last decade after Hugo Lloris held the role for eight years between 2015 and 2023. Son picked up the baton under Frank's predecessor Ange Postecoglou. Injuries affected Son in the 2024-25 campaign and Guglielmo Vicario, Romero and James Maddison were all given the armband at various points. Postecoglou frequently talked up the leadership qualities of World Cup winner Romero, who has been at the club since 2022. It was Romero who started as captain for Spurs' 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final and he also wore the armband for both legs of their semi-final wins against Bodo/Glimt and the quarter-final away triumph at Eintracht Frankfurt.
