Jota thought to have been driving before fatal crash: Spanish police
Madrid
Diogo Jota is thought to have been driving when he and his brother Andre Silva died in a car crash last week, Spanish police have said.
The Liverpool footballer and father-of-three was killed alongside his brother, also a footballer, after the Lamborghini they were travelling in burst into flames following a suspected tyre blowout last Thursday in Zamora, Spain.
A spokesperson for the Guardia Civil of Zamora told the PA news agency on Tuesday that tests being carried out by its traffic division showed Jota was driving the car at the time.
The spokesperson added that the car was thought to be travelling above the speed limit on the road, which local media report is 120 kilometres per hour.
The spokesperson said: 'The expert report is being carried out and finished, where among other things they are studying the marks (tread) left by one of the wheels of the vehicle.
'Everything also points to a possible high excess of speed over the permitted speed of the road.
'All the tests carried out for the moment point to the fact that the driver of the vehicle was Diogo Jota.'
The report has not yet been finalized but will be handed over to the court in the town of Puebla de Sanabria, Zamora.
Pictures of the aftermath of the crash showed debris scattered along the side of the road including what appeared to be charred parts of the vehicle.
Footballers, family and fans gathered for the funeral of the brothers which took place in their native Portugal on Saturday.
Jota's long-term partner Rute Cardoso, whom he had married just 11 days before the accident, was in attendance, as were his parents.
Liverpool report for
pre-season training
Liverpool's players have reported back for pre-season training at the club's training centre following Diogo Jota's funeral on Saturday.
Some of Arne Slot's squad had been scheduled to return for pre-season training on Friday, but the club delayed their return following the accident.
Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, Conor Bradley and Wataru Endo were among the players pictured arriving at the training ground on Tuesday.
Liverpool's first pre-season friendly is scheduled for Sunday against Preston at Deepdale, but the Premier League champions have yet to announce whether the game will go ahead.
The Reds, who will play FA Cup winners Crystal Palace in the Community Shield on August 10, are also scheduled to face AC Milan in Hong Kong and J1 League side Yokohama in Japan at the end of this month.

Premier League kicks off with holders Liverpool vs Bournemouth: all to know
Who: Liverpool vs Bournmouth What: English Premier League Where: Anfield, Liverpool in United Kingdom When: Friday, August 14, at 8pm (19:00 GMT) How to follow: We'll have all the build-up on Al Jazeera Sport from 4pm (15:00 GMT) in advance of our live text commentary stream. The new Premier League season kicks off with champions Liverpool entertaining Bournemouth on Friday. The 20-team English top-flight – still regarded as the best domestic league in world football – will run to Sunday, May 24. Al Jazeera Sport takes a look at the season opener at Anfield that will kick it off. Who is Liverpool's biggest rival? Liverpool won the Premier League title by a staggering 10 points, while taking their foot off the gas at the end, in Arne Slot's first season in charge. The previous season's champions, Manchester City, suffered a shocking start from which their attempt to win a fifth-straight title never recovered. Arsenal finished second for a third consecutive season and were the Reds' biggest challengers. Both sides are expected to push Slot's side all the way this season, while Chelsea will be in sharp focus following their FIFA Club World Cup final success against UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain. Newcastle and Aston Villa have both been upstarts in recent years, while Manchester United and Tottenham have fallen away. A challenge from any of those four would come as more than a mild surprise. Who has Liverpool signed for the new season? Liverpool have been busy in the summer transfer window with Florian Wirtz's arrival from Bayer Leverkusen, for $156m, heading up an impressive list that includes French forward Hugo Ekitike and Dutch wide man Jeremie Frimpong. Slot also revealed on Thursday that highly-regarded 18-year-old defender Giovanni Leoni will be joining from Parma. The Reds have also been heavily linked with moves for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak and Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Caoimhin Kelleher have all departed this summer, while the club is still coming to terms with the tragic loss of Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash last month. What business has Bournemouth conducted? The Cherries manager, Andoni Iraola, will have to find a way to cope with the loss of Kepa Arrizabalaga, Dean Huijsen, Illia Zabarnyi and Milos Kerkez, who all moved on from the Bournemouth backline in the summer, the latter joining Liverpool. Goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic has been brought in from Chelsea for 25 million pounds ($33.9m), while defenders Adrien Truffert and Julio Soler have arrived from Rennes and Lanus, respectively. Has Liverpool ever lost to Bournemouth? Yes. Bournemouth have twice beaten Liverpool in 24 previous meetings. The Reds have been overwhelmingly the better side in encounters between the sides, returning 19 wins in that time. How many Premier League titles have Liverpool won? Last season's Premier League success took Liverpool's number of English top-flight titles to 20, level with fierce rivals Manchester United. Has Bournemouth ever won a trophy? No. The south-coast club's 2015 Championship win, the second tier of English football, remains their most high-profile success. What the Liverpool manager said Arne Slot: 'The main reason that (winning the title) is so difficult is because there are so many competitors who can win the league. 'It's unbelievable if you are able to do it in this league. This year will be even harder than before. 'We have lost five to six players who played quite a lot of minutes last season, and brought in four, so it's normal there is adaptation.' The new season starts here. 2025/26 🔜 — Premier League (@premierleague) June 18, 2025 Liverpool team news Ryan Gravenberch is suspended following his red card on the final day of last season against Crystal Palace. Joe Gomez is struggling with an Achilles injury, while fellow defender Conor Bradley has a muscular problem. Both are expected to miss out. Bournemouth team news Enes Unal and Lewis Cook both remain long-term absentees due to knee problems. Ryan Christie, Luis Sinisterra and Justin Kluivert are all nearing returns but it is believed this game will come too soon for all three. Liverpool predicted starting lineup: Alisson; Frimpong, Konate, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Mac Allister, Szoboszlai; Salah, Wirtz, Gakpo; Ekitike Bournemouth predicted starting lineup: Petrovic; Araujo, Senesi, Hill, Truffert; Adams, Scott; Semenyo, Tavernier, Ouattara; Evanilson

Need to take matches overseas has dissipated: Premier League CEO
PA Media/dpa London The Premier League's need to take matches overseas to boost its global appeal has 'dissipated' since the idea of a 39th match round abroad was first floated in 2008, top-flight chief executive Richard Masters has said. Spain's La Liga and the Italian Serie A are taking steps to stage a domestic match each in the United States and Australia respectively in the coming season as those leagues seek further exposure. However, Masters believes the Premier League has gone global by other means. 'Whether (new proposals to play Spanish and Italian matches overseas) will actually happen hasn't changed our view about matches abroad,' he told Sky Sports News on Wednesday. 'We did look at the 39th game way back when, with lots of controversy. I recall that very clearly. 'Our objective at the time, when thinking about it, was to help grow the Premier League around the world. 'And we've been able to do that through different means, through brilliant broadcast partnerships, through digital technology, investing in other areas, like the Summer Series tournament we've just had in the US, and now the Premier League is a genuinely global league. 'There are billions of people who will be tuning in over the course of the next the next nine months to watch Premier League action. So we've achieved that objective by different means, that necessity has dissipated.' Villarreal and Barcelona are keen to play their scheduled match just before Christmas in Miami. The Spanish football federation has given its approval but it will also require the green light from the European confederation UEFA and the North American confederation CONCACAF. It is understood UEFA is yet to receive a request. Fans' groups of both clubs have come out in opposition, as have La Liga giants Real Madrid who have insisted that authorisation should be sought from all Spanish top flight teams before the go-ahead is given.

Defender Cristian Romero named new Tottenham captain
PAMedia/dpa Udine, Italy Centre-back Cristian Romero has been announced as Tottenham's new captain. Son Heung-min had worn the armband for the last two seasons and lifted the Europa League in May as Spurs ended their 17-year wait for silverware. However, Son's departure to Los Angeles FC earlier this month meant new head coach Thomas Frank was on the lookout for another leader and he has turned to Romero, who started as captain in the Europa League final win over Manchester United. 'I had a good conversation with Cuti Romero and he's going to be our captain,' Frank told the official club website. 'He was very honoured and very happy about it. It's a big thing and should be to lead this wonderful club out on the pitch, not just for this Super Cup, but also throughout the season. 'I think he has all the right qualities. He leads from his behaviour on the pitch, driving the team forward in every way and outside the pitch he's always pushing the team. 'I want a leadership group as well. Of course, one will wear the armband and be the captain, but I would like to have as many leaders as possible, four to five in the leadership group who can help, because it's the same with me, I can't do everything on my own and need a superb coaching staff around me. 'I will name that leadership group after the window to give me time to assess everything.' Romero is only Tottenham's third captain of the last decade after Hugo Lloris held the role for eight years between 2015 and 2023. Son picked up the baton under Frank's predecessor Ange Postecoglou. Injuries affected Son in the 2024-25 campaign and Guglielmo Vicario, Romero and James Maddison were all given the armband at various points. Postecoglou frequently talked up the leadership qualities of World Cup winner Romero, who has been at the club since 2022. It was Romero who started as captain for Spurs' 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final and he also wore the armband for both legs of their semi-final wins against Bodo/Glimt and the quarter-final away triumph at Eintracht Frankfurt.
