Bangladesh tour of Pakistan confirmed

Bangladesh were initially scheduled to play five T20Is in Lahore and Faisalabad. Photo: AFP/File The Bangladesh cricket team's tour of Pakistan has been confirmed on Tuesday, ending uncertainty surrounding the series. According to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), now three T20Is, all in Lahore, will be player instead of five which were initally scheduled, with the dates to be announced soon. The confirmation came after an extended meeting between PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chairman Nazmul Abedeen and President Farooq Ahmed. Following the successful talks, both boards agreed to move forward with the series despite earlier concerns. The three-match T20I series will mark an important step in cricketing relations between the two nations. PCB chairman expressed his gratitude to the BCB leadership for finalising the tour and reaffirming their commitment to bilateral cricket. Bangladesh will be led by experienced wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das, who was officially appointed as the T20I captain earlier this year after Najmul Hossain Shanto stepped down. Off-spinner Mahedi Hasan has been named vice-captain for both the UAE and Pakistan tour. It is pertinent to mention that the series had faced uncertainty due to rising tensions between India and Pakistan, as well as the mid-season postponement of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Originally, Bangladesh was scheduled to arrive in Pakistan on May 21 in two groups, with a five-match T20I series set to begin on May 25 in Faisalabad. However, logistical adjustments and security considerations have now led to a revised three-match series, all to be hosted in Lahore. Bangladesh squad for T20Is in UAE and Pakistan: Litton Das (captain), Tanzid Hasan, Parvez Hossain, Soumya Sarkar, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Towhid Hridoy, Shamim Hossain, Jaker Ali, Rishad Hossain, Mahedi Hasan (vice-capt), Tanvir Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Hasan Mahmud, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Nahid Rana and Shoriful Islam Tentative schedule 27 May – 1st T20I, Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore – 8:00 PM 29 May – 2nd T20I, Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore – 8:00 PM 31 May – 3rd T20I, Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore – 8:00 PM ICC meeting The International Cricket Council's (ICC) annual conference is scheduled to take place from July 17 to 20 in Singapore, with significant decisions expected on various matters concerning the future of the game. The meeting will be chaired for the first time by ICC chairman Jay Shah, who recently took over the role. This year's conference is expected to see some pivotal discussions and possible changes to the sport's playing conditions and administrative frameworks. One of the main items on the agenda is the review of several recent recommendations made by the ICC Cricket Committee, led by former India captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly. Among the most notable proposals is a change to the current One-Day International (ODI) playing conditions, suggesting the use of a single ball from the 25th over onward. This move is intended to revive the art of reverse swing, which has diminished under the existing two-ball rule. In addition, the conference will deliberate on the introduction of in-game clocks in Test cricket to enforce the completion of 90 overs per day. The system would be modeled after the over-rate regulation seen in white-ball formats, where a strict 60-second interval is maintained between overs. Another important proposal expected to be discussed involves the restructuring of the U-19 Men's World Cup. The ICC is considering transitioning the tournament from its traditional 50-over format to the T20 format, bringing it in line with the recently introduced U-19 Women's World Cup. This year's annual gathering will also feature elections to the Chief Executives' Committee (CEC), where three representatives from ICC Associate Members will be chosen. The electoral process will be conducted by a voting college consisting of 45 Associate Members, and the new appointees will serve a two-year term. While these proposals have been acknowledged, there has been no indication that the ICC Board has formally addressed them, and sources believe the likelihood of acceptance remains slim due to a lack of backing from major full member boards.

Sourav Ganguly in talks with BCCI to keep IPL 2025 final at Eden Gardens

Sourav Ganguly has said that he is in regular talks with the BCCI to keep the IPL 2025 final at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. There is still an uncertainty over the venues of the IPL 2025 playoffs as the BCCI is yet to confirm them yet. read more Former Indian cricket captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has said he is in regular talks with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to ensure that the final of IPL 2025 stays at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The BCCI has not yet officially confirmed the venues for the IPL 2025 playoffs after the tournament was suspended midway due to rising border tensions between India and Pakistan. A new schedule was announced by the board recently but the playoffs and final venues remain undecided. As per the revised schedule, the IPL 2025 playoffs are scheduled to begin from 29 May with the final slated to be held on 3 June. The BCCI has said that it will confirm the venues for the playoffs in the coming days. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Before the IPL 2025 was suspended due to security concerns, Kolkata was scheduled to host the IPL 2025 final and the Qualifier 2. But due to possible logistical challenges and concerns about heavy rainfall in Kolkata during this period, the BCCI is considering shifting the matches to some other venue. Ahmedabad is being tipped to host the final but nothing has been confirmed yet. Ganguly wants IPL 2025 final in Kolkata However, Sourav Ganguly is confident that Eden Gardens will still host the final. In a conversation with news agency PTI, Ganguly revealed that he is in talks with the BCCI to keep the playoff matches in Kolkata. The former BCCI boss also pointed out that the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) has a good relationship with the apex body, suggesting it will help in their talks. 'No, no, we're trying – talking to the BCCI. Eto sohoje sore jawa jay? (Is it that easy to shift the final). It's Eden's playoffs, and I'm sure everything will be sorted. I'm very hopeful. Protest doesn't help much. BCCI has a very good relationship with the Cricket Association of Bengal,' Ganguly was quoted as saying by PTI. The CAB, which manages Eden Gardens in Kolkata, is currently led by Ganguly's brother Snehasish Ganguly. Eden Gardens was originally awarded the playoff matches because the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won the IPL trophy last year. Meanwhile, the KKR have been knocked out of the IPL 2025 playoff race after their game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) got abandoned due to rain on Saturday. The IPL 2025 restart didn't go as planned and the pause will continue for now. Even though KKR are now officially out of the race, fans and CAB officials would still want the playoffs to take place at Eden Gardens. The fans obviously love the sport, while the CAB will hope to earn the big bucks that come with hosting any IPL game. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Rahul Dravid's humorous message to Rohit Sharma for special Wankhede Stadium stand: ‘…I know who to contact'

Former India head coach Rahul Dravid sent a special message to Rohit Sharma after a stand was named after him in the home ground Wankhede Stadium. Rohit, who recently announced his retirement from Test cricket, was present at Wankhede Stadium when the Mumbai Cricket Association named a stand each after him, former India skipper Ajit Wadekar, and ex-BCCI president Sharad Pawar. It was a special moment for India's ODI skipper to get a stand named after him at the stadium where he grew up playing and became one of the best white-ball batters to play for India. Dravid, under whose guidance Rohit and Co. won the 2024 T20 World Cup, shared a special message for his old ally. Dravid said that having a stand after his name is a reward for Rohit's contribution to Indian and Mumbai cricket. "Hey Rohit. Guess you hit so many sixes into those stands that they had to name one after you! But, congratulations. I'm sure as a young boy going into the iconic Wankhede Stadium — truly one of the great stadiums in the world — I'm sure you would have loved to have played there, I'm sure you would have wanted to have some great performances there, which you have done. I'm not sure you dreamt about having a stand named after you, but that it has come to that and that you have one named after you, it's a just reward for your contribution to both Mumbai and Indian cricket," Dravid said in a video message shared by Mumbai Indians on their social media account. Rohit also made his international debut under Dravid's captaincy, and the latter made a witty remark about when he knows who to contact the next time he needs a ticket to watch a match at Wankhede Stadium. "It's truly well deserved — congratulations! I hope it was a great day with family and friends. Looking forward to seeing a lot more sixes into the Rohit Sharma Stand in all the games that you play. And when I'm short on tickets in Mumbai — now that you have a stand — I know who to contact,' Dravid added. The swashbuckling opener recently announced his retirement from Test cricket ahead of the upcoming five-match series against England, which will mark the beginning of India's ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 campaign. Throughout his Test career, he accumulated 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries. His top score of 212 came during a memorable home series against South Africa in 2019. He retires as the 16th-highest run-scorer for India in Test cricket.

A moist-eyed Rohit Sharma on Friday thanked his parents in an emotionally-charged voice before escorting them to the stage to unveil the stand at the Wankhede Stadium that displayed their son's name in bold letters. Rohit was not the superstar cricketer but a loving son, giving the ultimate acknowledgment of the sacrifices his parents made to help him realise his dreams. 'It's going to be even more special, to have my family here, parents, brother, wife. I am grateful and thankful for whatever they have sacrificed for me,' Rohit said in a ceremony organised by the Mumbai Cricket Association. Ritika, Rohit's wife, stood beside him soaking in the moment with a wide smile radiating her pride and satisfaction. Apart from Rohit, former India skipper Ajit Wadekar, and ex-BCCI president Sharad Pawar too were honoured with stands donning their names. For Rohit, it was a moment he dreamt from childhood, to get mentioned in the same breath as some of the towering names of Indian cricket. He was chuffed to the core too. "What is going to happen today, I have never dreamed of. As a kid growing up, I wanted to play for Mumbai, for India. For me to have my name amongst the greats of the game, I cannot express it in words. "This is also special as I am still playing. I have retired from two formats, but I am still playing one format," he said. But for someone who has achieved so much as a cricketer, Rohit harboured one more wish. "It will be surreal when I play on 21st (for Mumbai Indians in IPL) and have a stand here, it will be special when I represent the country here," added Rohit, hinting at his desire to play an ODI at the Wankhede. Rohit has already retired from T20Is and Test cricket after serving the nation with distinction. It was also special for him because Wankhede was one venue that shaped his cricketing dreams. "I had never dreamt of what was going to happen today. You try to achieve a lot of milestones, but something like this is really special, because Wankhede is an iconic stadium and so many memories have been made here," said Rohit. "Special thanks to Pawar Saheb and Devendra Fadnavis for making it very special, it's a very special day," he said. But the former Indian skipper soon slipped into his progressional self, knowing that Mumbai Indians is yet to seal an IPL playoffs berth. "My special team MI is also here, waiting for my speech to be over and start training," he said with a smile. Later, his India and MI teammate Suryakumar Yadav paid glowing tribute to Rohit. "Congratulations @rohitsharma45 on achieving incredible things on the cricket ground, from finisher to opener to our captain, you have been an inspiration and our pride, in every role. "Very rarely comes a leader who leads from the front, and changes the game for the better. You are that leader who has changed not just the game, but the approach, the attitude, the dressing room atmosphere, the team, and redefined the role of a captain. "Like I have said before, good things happen to good people, and you deserve it all and more. Wankhede just got even more iconic," Suryakumar posted on his Instagram account shortly after the stand was inaugurated. Fadnavis, on his part, said that his government will allot land if the MCA sends a proposal for a new stadium. "Our iconic batter, captain and one of my favourites, and one who mesmerizes with his batting is present here," the CM said. "If there is a proposal from MCA for a new stadium, we will allot space for that to accommodate more fans," he added.
