Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's Test retirements have sparked debate over their 2027 ODI World Cup hopes. Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly believes it won't be easy for the legends and outlined what they must do to stay in contention. read more
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma shocked the world recently by announcing their retirements from Test cricket. They had already stepped down from T20 cricket last year after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup. Their recent decisions to retire from red-ball cricket have raised a big question around their availability to play in the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Both Kohli and Rohit are modern-day legends, and fans would love to see them lift the ODI World Cup trophy before they say goodbye to international cricket. The 2027 Cricket World Cup is still more than two years away and by then, Kohli will be 39 and Rohit will turn 40. There are concerns regarding their fitness and match-readiness at that age.

However, since they won't be playing Tests and T20s anymore, some believe that they can now fully focus on ODIs and prepare themselves just for the 50-over format. That could actually work in their favour, as they will have fewer matches to worry about and can manage their bodies better.
Ganguly on Kohli-Rohit's ODI future
But former India captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has a different view. Ganguly believes that if Kohli and Rohit are serious about playing the 2027 ODI World Cup, they will have to stay active in the format for the next two years.
'It won't be easy. 15 games a year. I've got no advice. I think they know the game as much as I do. And they will take a call. But all of us must understand that just like everyone, the game will go away from them and they will go away from the game,' Ganguly told PTI in an interview.
India have at least 27 ODI matches scheduled between now and the next World Cup. Ganguly feels that Kohli and Rohit must stay committed to playing most, if not all, of these matches if they really want to be part of the World Cup squad.
Both Rohit and Kohli have already had legendary careers. They recently won the ICC Champions Trophy and the T20 World Cup. They qualified for the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup without losing a single game, but lost to Australia in the summit clash. Note, Rohit is still the captain of the Indian ODI team.

Arjun Tendulkar "Is Not Studying At All": Suresh Raina Reveals Sachin Tendulkar's Prank On Flight Attendant

Not only was Sachin Tendulkar one of the greatest batters of his generation and cricket history, but his flamboyant nature within the dressing room has also been narrated by several of his teammates. Tendulkar was often been labelled the prankster of the Indian dressing room, and former India cricketer Suresh Raina has now revealed another hilarious prank the legendary batter pulled off. This one took place when Raina was a newcomer in the Indian team, and Tendulkar pretended he was his own son! Recently, Raina recalled one of the pranks played on him by Tendulkar. "We were once going to play a Test match when I was about 18 years old, and I was sitting in business class next to Sachin paaji. The air hostess came over and said, 'Good morning, Sachin sir. How are you?'," Raina narrated, speaking on the 'Cheeky Singles' show. "Assuming I was Arjun (Tendulkar's son), she said something to him about me in passing; Sachin paaji saw a chance to have some fun," Raina said. "Yes, he's not studying at all, what to do? I've even told Anjali (Tendulkar's wife)," was Tendulkar's humorous response to the air hostess mistaking Raina to be his son. Raina revealed the conversation he had with Tendulkar in the aftermath of the prank. "Later, we went to the section where the other players were sitting, and I blurted out, 'Why are you making me sit in business class? You've made me Arjun Tendulkar!' (Sachin) paaji eventually clarified it for the air hostess, saying, 'He's part of the Indian cricket team, he is Suresh Raina, not my son'. Paaji loved playing such big pranks sometimes," Raina said. Raina and Tendulkar shared the dressing room for both Tests and ODIs, including as part of the triumphant 2011 Cricket World Cup squad on home soil.

Rohit Sharma dethrones Babar Azam in ICC ODI Rankings despite not playing since March; fans say ‘still dominating at 38'

Rohit Sharma may not have played international cricket for the past five months, but the Indian captain still made gains in the latest ICC ODI rankings for batters, announced on Wednesday. Rohit, who has already retired from Tests and T20Is, last played an ODI in March during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand, which India won. While Rohit gained a spot to be at no.2 in the ICC ODI rankings for batters, former Pakistan skipper Babar Azam dropped to third after a poor show in a three-match series against West Indies, which the Men in Green lost 1-2 on Tuesday in Trinidad. With Babar managing just 56 runs against the West Indies in three ODIs, the International Cricket Council (ICC) took note of his strike rate to drop him to third. Rohit, who scored 180 runs in the ICC Champions Trophy in five matches, boasted a highest strike rate of 100.00 among the Indian batters in the tournament. In comparison, Babar managed a strike rate of just 62.22 against the West Indies. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill (first), Virat Kohli (fourth) and Shreyas Iyer (eighth) retained their respective positions in the top 10 of the rankings. Meanwhile, the Rohit loyalists left no stone unturned in celebrating the Indian star. With no international calendar for India in August, Rohit will now return in national colours during their away ODI series against Australia in October. India will be playing three ODIs and five T20Is against Australia. Along with Rohit, Virat Kohli will also be returning to the fold.
