Bengaluru court convicts ex-JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna in rape case; sentence tomorrow
Bengaluru: The Special Court for MPs/MLAs in Bengaluru on Friday pronounced ex-JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna, grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, guilty in the obscene video and rape case. The verdict was delivered by Judge Santhosh Gajanana Bhat. The court is scheduled to announce the quantum of punishment on Saturday, after allowing the convict, Prajwal Revanna, and his counsel to make their final submissions on the conviction. Prajwal Revanna was produced before the court, and as soon as the verdict was pronounced, he was seen with tears in his eyes, wiping them while seated inside the courtroom. After stepping out of the court hall, he sat down in a chair in visible despair and broke down, unable to process the shock. The court on July 30 had deferred the judgment, citing the need for certain clarifications. After seeking inputs from both sides and issuing directions, the matter was adjourned until this day. He was arrested last year and has been in jail for 14 months. The case in question pertains to a rape complaint and other charges filed by a domestic worker from K.R. Nagar against Prajwal Revanna. The court has reviewed 26 pieces of evidence in connection with the case. Prajwal Revanna faces three other similar cases. Videos allegedly showing Prajwal Revanna sexually assaulting women and recording the acts surfaced during the 2024 Lok Sabha election period. Following this, Prajwal fled the country. A victim from Holenarasipura initially filed a police complaint against him. Upon his return to Bengaluru on May 31, 2024, he was arrested by the Bengaluru Police. His return came after public appeals from former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda and Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. Prajwal was lodged in Bengaluru Central Jail, and his multiple bail pleas were outrightly rejected by all courts. One of the videos that caused widespread outrage during the election period shows the alleged sexual assault of an elderly domestic worker at a farmhouse in Holenarasipura. In the video, the woman is seen pleading with Prajwal to spare her, stating that she had served food to his father and other family elders. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) had filed cases under IPC Sections 376(2)(n) (repeated rape on the same woman), 506 (criminal intimidation), 354A(1) (unwelcome physical contact and advances, sexual demands), 354B (use of criminal force with intent to disrobe), 354C (voyeurism -- capturing images of a woman engaged in a private act without her consent), along with relevant sections of the Information Technology Act. Police had collected strong evidence in this particular case. They recorded the statement of the victim, collected the samples of semen of Prajwal Revanna from the clothes of the victim, and also obtained the video of the sexual assault.

Former Hassan Parliamentarian Found Guilty In Sexual Assault Case By Bengaluru Special Court
A specialized judicial court in Bengaluru has delivered a conviction against former parliamentarian Prajwal Revanna in a sexual assault and criminal abuse matter on Friday. The verdict marks the first successful prosecution among multiple criminal proceedings initiated against the ex-JD(S) representative. The former lawmaker was found guilty in the initial sexual violence case that was formally lodged with the Holenarasipura Rural Police Station located in Hassan District, Karnataka. The specialized tribunal handling cases involving elected representatives had concluded the legal proceedings on July 18 and had withheld its decision until Friday's announcement. The criminal charges stem from allegations involving a 48-year-old domestic worker who was employed at the family's agricultural property in Gannikada within Hassan district's Holenarasipura region. According to prosecution evidence, the victim was allegedly subjected to sexual assault on two separate occasions during 2021, with the accused reportedly documenting these criminal acts using his mobile device. Legal authorities have initiated four distinct criminal proceedings against the former parliamentarian, encompassing charges of sexual violence and criminal harassment. A dedicated Special Investigation Team was established to conduct comprehensive inquiries into all allegations leveled against him. The court has scheduled the pronouncement of punishment for Saturday, August 2, following Friday's guilty verdict. This development represents a significant milestone in what has become one of Karnataka's most high-profile criminal cases involving a political figure. Prajwal Revanna belongs to the prominent political dynasty as the grandson of former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) senior leader HD Deve Gowda. His political career came under intense scrutiny when the criminal allegations first emerged during the 2024 general election campaign. The scandal initially broke when storage devices containing explicit video content allegedly featuring the former MP began circulating throughout Hassan constituency just before the April 26, 2024 parliamentary elections. These materials reportedly contained evidence of sexual misconduct involving multiple victims. Law enforcement agencies apprehended the accused on May 31 of the previous year immediately upon his arrival at Bengaluru Airport following his return from Germany. His arrest was executed in connection with criminal charges filed at the Holenarasipura Town Police Station. The former parliamentarian's political fortunes suffered dramatically as a result of these allegations. He failed to secure re-election to the Hassan parliamentary seat during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, marking the end of his legislative career. Subsequently, the JD(S) party leadership took disciplinary action by suspending his membership following the registration of multiple criminal cases. The conviction represents the culmination of intensive investigation efforts by Karnataka police and demonstrates the state's commitment to prosecuting sexual crimes regardless of the accused person's political status or family connections. The case has drawn significant public attention due to the severity of the allegations and the prominence of the accused individual within Karnataka's political landscape.

JDU's Rajeev Ranjan Prasad assumes charge as Vice Chairman of Bihar Upper Caste Commission
Patna (Bihar) [India], May 31 (ANI): JDU leader Rajeev Ranjan Prasad assumed office as the Vice Chairman of the Bihar State Commission for Development of Upper Castes on Saturday. 'Based on data from the Caste Survey, we believe the challenges during this Commission's tenure will be met with timely recommendations to the state government, and its role will be crucial. The responsibility lies with the newly nominated members of the Commission, who are all capable individuals entrusted by the Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar. Many good people have been appointed to various commissions, and work will progress across all fronts...' Prasad told ANI. He further stated that the Commission continued to be dedicated to upper caste development and added that, with the caste survey data, its role had become more important. 'This continues to be the only commission dedicated to upper caste development. Following the Centre's decision on EWS (Economically Weaker Sections), the state government also implemented it. With the Caste Survey data and these developments, the Commission's role becomes even more important...' he added. Earlier on May 30, ahead of the upcoming Bihar elections, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Mahachandra Prasad Singh was appointed as the Chairman of the Commission. The Bihar General Administration Department issued the official notification on Thursday. Singh has been appointed for a three-year term. The move comes at a time when the state is witnessing significant political realignments. Former Union Minister and ex-JD(U) leader Ram Chandra Prasad Singh recently merged his political outfit Aap Sabki Awaz (ASA) with the Jan Suraaj Party led by Prashant Kishor. Singh had left the JD(U) in 2023, joined the BJP, and later launched his own party in 2024, announcing plans to contest the 2025 Bihar Assembly polls. The Bihar Assembly elections are expected to be held later this year. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), comprising the BJP, JD(U), and LJP, is aiming to retain power, while the opposition INDIA bloc is preparing to challenge the incumbent Nitish Kumar-led government.
