Tips and race-by-race guide for Scone on Monday

Track good 4 and rail true. Race 1 3. Champagne Tonight, an ex-Victorian filly with plenty of ability, will have her first outing in NSW for a leading Armidale stable since debuting early last spring. Showed speed that day against some handy opposition and reportedly has been working well. Gets first use of the inside and likely to start a short-priced favourite after being scratched from the opener at Grafton on Sunday to be saved for this. 9. It Stays In Vegas is a two-year-old trained on the track, and the clear threat fourth-up after placing in his last two. 4. Diva Rouge, fitter into her second start, and 10. Vincetio, who was well outclassed on debut against metropolitan opposition, can fight for the minor prize. How to play it: Champagne Tonight to win and quinella 3 and 9. Race 2 8. Liberty London can improve sharply second-up off a lengthy break, and significantly back on a bigger track four weeks between runs. Never got much room when settling back in her first NSW run, but balances up much better here and can produce a telling final 300m burst. 2. Royal Armada reloads for the new home stable with gear changes three weeks after doing next to nothing from well back at Wyong. 1. Power Through is a big market watch resuming for his second prep behind a tidy trial. 3. Keinbah's Gift made some late ground on debut at Newcastle in heavy going and can improve sharply back on top of the ground. 4. Hannah's Bridge can run into the minor money from the inside draw. How to play it: Liberty London to win. Race 3 7. Ichika is an improving mare tracking nicely to peak third-up. Ran home well when having her first run in NSW after transferring from Queensland, then again hit the line late from even further back in a Super Maiden at Tamworth. Drawn to settle a bit closer from this draw, and a stronger jockey goes on. 6. Epic Statement is the likely market threat, despite drawing wide third-up. Has also done her best work late in two closing efforts this prep and another one suited by the big stretch here. 5. Airwalker is over the odds second-up from a softer draw; while 2. Hanoverian, lightly raced and second-up, and home tracker 9. Lily Darling, resuming off a quiet trial here can both add value into trifecta and first four plays.

Race-by-race tips and preview for Tamworth on Friday

Track soft 7 and rail true. RACE 1 8. Capsity is the only two-year-old in the field, and she makes her debut for the Brett Cavanough stable. A daughter of prolific sprint sire Capitalist, she starts after two progressive 1000m trials, and is bred to thrive on rain-affected ground. 3. Tough Guy is an ex-Victorian three-year-old having his first start for the new home stable, with a string of gear changes in play, and likely to jump a short-priced favourite. Was never far away in three handy efforts down south before spelling, and been tuned up for a strong NSW debut with a solid soft-track trial at Scone. 1. Jagerschnitzel is another one having his first outing for a new Scone yard since transferring from Victoria. Form this prep is very average, but the blinkers come off. Gap to the rest. How to play it: Capsity to win. RACE 2 5. Shamister is an underrated and very fit Dubbo five-year-old that emerges as the one to beat in an average field despite having a poor winning strike rate. Has beaten all but the winner in two of his past three from off the speed, and can settle a bit closer from a softer draw this time, and finish over them. 2. Imezaaki is trained on the course, and right in the hunt third up over the longer trip, with a leading jockey taking over. 7. Libby is still searching for that breakthrough win deep into the prep, but has run home into the placings in her past three, and looking for this longer journey now. 3. Your Temptation, back in grade over further, and 6. Bill Peyto, deep into the campaign, can both add value into exotic plays. How to play it: Shamister to win. RACE 3 7. Yanabah is a progressive and locally trained four-year-old primed to break through fifth up. Has hit the line hard to miss out narrowly in his past two from near the speed and much further back, and has placed five times from nine career runs, often by small margins. Gets enough speed on to settle back and round them up late. 9. Halle Bee is another local, and logical threat fourth up with the leading jockey booked to ride. Has a near 50 per cent place rate from 19 starts. 3. Hardhead is over the odds deep into the prep from a soft draw, while 2. Hanoverian is a market watch resuming for only his second start off two trials. How to play it: Yanabah to win. RACE 4 2. Louisbugh can start the redemption trail here fourth up coming back 100m in trip three weeks between runs. Has been rolled in his last couple as a short-priced favourite on heavy ground, but winkers come off and drawn further out where he settles with more room in the run home are keys to an overdue win. 1. Justice Warrior is a real toiler that has beaten all but the winner in his past two at the provincials, boxing on OK after leading at Wyong last start. This draw and a drop in distance suit. Watch the betting on 4. Snap Decision, a three-year-old son of Proisir in the local Cody Morgan yard, that makes his debut from the inside draw behind an easy trial. Big gap to the remainder headed by 5. Xerxes, which can run into the minor money resuming off a quiet trial. How to play it: Louisburgh to win.

The usually sure-footed Greiner stumbles but stays on track

Nick Greiner, the man tasked with saving the Liberal Party, has made the extraordinary admission that he does not want the job. The Liberals' federal executive has appointed the former NSW premier to head a new committee to oversee the party's NSW branch, after embarrassing comments by another elder statesman made his continuing tenure impossible. However, just hours after Greiner accepted the new challenge, he told ABC radio he was not keen to take the job. 'I tried to get out of it but they caught me at Auckland Airport yesterday morning at 4:30 am, and I was, I was weak,' he said. 'And look, I don't mean to be jocular about it ... that is actually true.' It is an unusual first step stumble from the sure-footed 78-year-old Greiner when the Liberal Party needs acutely disciplined leadership and tough reform following monumental administrative calamity in NSW and historic rebuff from heartland voters in last month's federal election. The former leader Peter Dutton last year appointed Alan Stockdale, 80, a former Liberal Party federal president and ex-Victorian treasurer, another outsider, former Victorian senator Richard Alston, 84, and former NSW MP Peta Seaton, 65, as administrators to run the NSW division after its failure to nominate 144 candidates for local government elections. The intervention seemed to be proceeding apace with the executive due to consider extending the trio's term on Tuesday, until Stockdale put his foot in his mouth. The Victorian told a Zoom meeting of the NSW Liberal Women's Council earlier this month that 'women are sufficiently assertive now ... we should be giving some thought to whether we need to protect men's involvement'. With consternation rippling through Liberal ranks – after all, the party failed due to its inability to attract or retain women voters – Stockdale apologised, but it was clear the two octogenarians' days were numbered. Being Victorians had something to do with it, but being male and stale played a role too, and Stockdale and Alston were shown the door. In their stead, they have been replaced by a hand-picked team with Seaton joined by leading moderate Liberal Jane Buncle, party vice presidents Berenice Walker, Peter O'Hanlon and James Owen, and honorary treasurer Mark Baillie, all of them under Greiner's watchful eye. Stockdale left another parting misstep: several Liberal sources told the Herald 's Alexandra Smith he had argued Walker, president of the women's council, should not be on the new committee. At the same time, some right-wing members pushed for former prime minister Tony Abbott to be on the committee, but were overwhelmingly opposed. Greiner admits party factions foster self-interest and deter voters, but told the ABC he would like to remove the branches' power to reject members and reduce the state executive from 27 to about 10 or 12.
