Fan banned from all MLB stadiums after vile taunt brings star to tears

A 22-year-old White Sox fan who yelled at Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte about his late mother has been banned indefinitely from all MLB ballparks. The league and the White Sox worked together on the decision, the New York Post reports. Marte was visibly distraught after hearing the comments during the top of the seventh inning of Wednesday's game (AEST). He broke down in tears during the bottom half of the inning. He was consoled on the field by Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo, who later said he had heard the comments himself but did not want to repeat the words. The fan was removed from the game. 'We commend the White Sox for taking immediate action in removing the fan,' the MLB said in a statement. Marte's mother, Elpidia Valdez, died in a car accident in the Dominican Republic in 2017. Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo, who consoled Marte on the field alongside Lovullo, had called for the ban after the game. 'That can't happen,' Perdomo said of the fan's alleged actions. 'Everybody knows how Ketel is. He's fun. He plays the game hard. I feel bad for him. I feel mad about it. 'I hope MLB can do something with that guy. I don't know who it was, but they've got to do something. 'We can't continue to do that [expletive] here in MLB … he should be banned, for sure. 'Everybody knows Ketel lost his mum. She was the world to him.'

Report: Fan banned by MLB after heckling Dbacks' Ketel Marte to tears with barb about late mother

A fan who heckled Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte during a game against the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field on Tuesday night has been banned indefinitely from all major league stadiums, a person with direct knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press. Marte was seen in tears on the field after the spectator yelled a derogatory comment about Marte's late mother during a seventh-inning at-bat in Arizona's 4-1 win over Chicago. Advertisement According to a White Sox spokesperson, the security staff at the ballpark relayed that the 22-year-old fan was 'very apologetic and remorseful after the fact, and admitted to being very inappropriate and stupid with his comments.' Another person confirmed to the AP that Major League Baseball had banned the fan from all big league stadiums. That person spoke on condition of anonymity because the punishment wasn't announced by the league. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo and bench coach Jeff Banister asked for the fan to be removed from the game. Before Wednesday's series finale, Lovullo said he 'had little bit of an interaction with the fan' as he was yelling at Marte. 'He wasn't getting it and was very pompous, and it didn't sit right with me,' Lovullo said. 'It was just a gross comment you wouldn't say about anybody, let alone someone who lost their mom. 'We need better baseball fans. Baseball deserves better.' Advertisement Marte's mother, Elpidia Valdez, died in a car accident in the Dominican Republic in 2017. Marte, who hit a solo home run in the first inning Tuesday night, was seen visibly upset during a pitching change in the bottom of the seventh as Lovullo put his arm around his player and consoled him. 'I just reacted as a dad would when I went out to change pitchers,' Lovullo said, according to the Arizona Republic. 'I could see he was sobbing. It hurt.' "(I told him): 'I love you and I'm with you, and we're all together and you're not alone. No matter what happens, no matter what was said or what you heard, that guy is an idiot. It shouldn't have an impact on you.'' Marte declined to comment on the incident through a team official. Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo said the fan 'should be banned, for sure' and called for MLB to intervene. 'That can't happen,' Perdomo said. 'We can't continue to do that ... here in MLB.'

Chicago White Sox ban fan who brought Ketel Marte to tears with taunt about late mother

The Chicago White Sox have indefinitely banned a fan from their home games after he brought Arizona Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte to tears after heckling him about his late mother. Marte was seen in tears on the field after a spectator yelled a derogatory comment about his mother, Elpidia Valdez, who died in a car rash in the Dominican Republic in 2017. Marte was visibly upset during a pitchng change at the bottom of the seventh inning, and manager Torey Lovullo was seen consoling him with an arm around him. Lovullo and bench coast Jeff Banister asked for the fan to be removed. The White Sox confirmed Wednesday the fan was ejected from the game and has been banned indefinitely. Marte declined to comment on the incident through a team official. Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo said the fan "should be banned, for sure" and called for Major League Baseball to intervene. "That can't happen," Perdomo said. "We can't continue to do that ... here in MLB." While the fan has not been identified, White Sox manager Will Venable discussed the incident Wednesday morning at a media availability. "No player should ever have to be subjected to that kind of stuff from fans," Venable said. "That's not reflective of anything that I've seen from these White Sox fans. They've been extremely positive and extremely supportive, and for Ketel to have to experience that is extremely disappointing. I sent my apologies over to them last night, and I know a number of us have apologized, again, for what is not representative of how our fans behave, and something that no player should be subjected to." Asked about the team's response, Venable simply replied, "Anybody who is engaged in that kind of stuff is not going to be welcome." The White Sox and Diamondbacks play again at The Rate Wednesday afternoon at 1:10 p.m. CT. contributed to this report.
