Report: Fan banned by MLB after heckling Dbacks' Ketel Marte to tears with barb about late mother

Yahoo26-06-2025
A fan who heckled Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte during a game against the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field on Tuesday night has been banned indefinitely from all major league stadiums, a person with direct knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press.
Marte was seen in tears on the field after the spectator yelled a derogatory comment about Marte's late mother during a seventh-inning at-bat in Arizona's 4-1 win over Chicago.

According to a White Sox spokesperson, the security staff at the ballpark relayed that the 22-year-old fan was 'very apologetic and remorseful after the fact, and admitted to being very inappropriate and stupid with his comments.' Another person confirmed to the AP that Major League Baseball had banned the fan from all big league stadiums. That person spoke on condition of anonymity because the punishment wasn't announced by the league.
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo and bench coach Jeff Banister asked for the fan to be removed from the game. Before Wednesday's series finale, Lovullo said he 'had little bit of an interaction with the fan' as he was yelling at Marte.
'He wasn't getting it and was very pompous, and it didn't sit right with me,' Lovullo said. 'It was just a gross comment you wouldn't say about anybody, let alone someone who lost their mom.
'We need better baseball fans. Baseball deserves better.'

Marte's mother, Elpidia Valdez, died in a car accident in the Dominican Republic in 2017. Marte, who hit a solo home run in the first inning Tuesday night, was seen visibly upset during a pitching change in the bottom of the seventh as Lovullo put his arm around his player and consoled him.
'I just reacted as a dad would when I went out to change pitchers,' Lovullo said, according to the Arizona Republic. 'I could see he was sobbing. It hurt.'
"(I told him): 'I love you and I'm with you, and we're all together and you're not alone. No matter what happens, no matter what was said or what you heard, that guy is an idiot. It shouldn't have an impact on you.''
Marte declined to comment on the incident through a team official. Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo said the fan 'should be banned, for sure' and called for MLB to intervene.
'That can't happen,' Perdomo said. 'We can't continue to do that ... here in MLB.'

Bulls to retire Derrick Rose's No. 1 jersey on Jan. 24, 2026, after game vs. Celtics

The Chicago Bulls will raise Derrick Rose's No. 1 jersey into the rafters at the United Center next year, in a postgame ceremony retiring the former NBA MVP's jersey. On Thursday, the Bulls announced they will officially retire Rose's jersey on Jan. 24, 2026, at the United Center following a game against the Boston Celtics. Rose will become the fifth Bulls player to receive the franchise honor, joining former players Jerry Sloan (No. 4), Bob Love (No. 10), Michael Jordan (No. 23), and Scottie Pippen (No. 33). In adition to retiring his number next season, the Bulls will give away collectible four Derrick Rose figurines at other games honoring different chapters in Rose's career, including: In 2010-11, Rose guided the Bulls to the best record of 62-20 and was a part of seven straight NBA Playoff appearances for the Bulls from 2008-15. In total, Rose played 406 regular season games in Chicago, posting career averages of 19.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 6.2 assists. He also holds the third-highest assists per game average and ninth-highest scoring average in team history. Rose is the only other Bulls player since Michael Jordan (1988-89) to record at least 2,000 points and 600 assists in a single season after recording clips of 25.0 points and 7.7 assists in 2010-11, even leading the team to its first Eastern Conference Finals appearance since 1998. After the Bulls, Rose played with the Knicks (2016-17, 2021) before signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers in between. He's also played for the Detroit Pistons and the Memphis Grizzlies. Key WR Issues Could Take Bloom Off Vikings As 2025 Season Starts

The Minnesota Vikings want quarterback J.J. McCarthy to go into the start of the season against the Chicago Bears with a full complement of talent on the offensive side of the ball. McCarthy will start his NFL career in the first Monday night football game of the season. A national television audience will get to observe his skills, flaws, talent and creativity. That's a lot of pressure, perhaps quite a bit more than if he would have opened the season in a Sunday game at noon Central Time as one of eight or nine games in the same time slot. The Vikings were a very accomplished 14-3 team last year and that means the league believes the team should be in a number of glamour time slots throughout the 2025 season. Head coach Kevin O'Connell is not worried about the added pressure of a prime time game serving as McCarthy's entry into NFL football. However, he has to be worried about the crew of wide receivers McCarthy will have at his disposal at the start of the season. Justin Jefferson is the Vikings' leader at the position and may be the No. 1 wide receiver in the NFL. If he is not, he is no worse than No. 3 behind Ja'Marr Chase of the Bengals and CeeDee Lamb of the Cowboys. The problem is that Jefferson has been battling a hamstring strain throughout training camp. The injury has been described as mild, but it has kept Jefferson from getting on the field in the preseason and working with McCarthy in any of the team's preseason games. Will he be at full speed and on the same page with McCarthy against the Bears in Week 1 or the Atlanta Falcons in Week 2? The answer better be yes, because Jefferson is coming off a season that saw him catch 103 passes for 1,533 yards with 10 touchdowns. Throughout his career, he is averaging 109 catches for 1,641 yards and 9 TDs for every full 17-game season he plays. The Vikings won't have his primary partner on the field in any of their opening three games. No. 2 wideout Jordan Addison has accepted a three-game suspension by the NFL after he pleaded guilty to a 'wet reckless' charge following his DUI arrest in 2024. Addison appears to have a great rapport with McCarthy and he will be missed badly as the Vikings start the season. He is coming off a 63-875-9 season last year, and big things are expected from him once he gets back in the lineup. Lack of depth at wideout could hamper offense Since Addison will be out of the lineup, the Vikings need No. 3 wideout Jalen Nailor to come through with a significant contribution through the first three games. However, the 5-11, 190-pound fourth-year wideout from Michigan State is not at his best. He jammed his hand during the team's combined practice sessions earlier this month with the New England Patriots. Will he be ready to build off the 28-414-6 season he had a year ago? That has not been determined. The Vikings are looking at Lucky Jackson, Tai Felton and Myles Price as those that will try to get McCarthy's career off to a memorable start. If Jefferson is limited in any way, the wide receiver cupboard is not exactly stocked with brilliant talent. A trade for another wideout or a key pickup after teams cut their rosters down to the 53-man limit by August 26 are legitimate possibilities. The situation is not as desperate as it seems, because tight end T.J. Hockenson and running back Aaron Jones are both solid pass catchers. Hockenson is capable of dominating when the team gets in the red zone and Jones can beat most linebackers when he runs circle routes. Jones and backup running Jordan Mason may be the key to the Vikings offense during the first month of the season. Even under the best of circumstances, O'Connell knows that McCarthy's adjustment to the NFL will be a challenge and a top-notch running game will help him quite a bit. Both Jones and Mason have the track record to give the Vikings the production on the ground to turn that strategy into one that will help this team get off to the winning start it must have if the 2025 season is going to be successful.

Little League World Series scores: Schedule, results as Connecticut reaches U.S. championship, South Carolina survives

The 2025 Little League World Series is underway. Four teams continue their quest to win it all in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, on Thursday in the annual summer tournament. A new winner will be crowned in 2025 after last year's champion, Lake Mary, Florida, was eliminated in the regional round. Connecticut beat Nevada on Wednesday to reach the U.S. championship game. Nevada could still make the U.S. title game if it beats South Carolina, which rallied from five runs down to beat South Dakota in extra innings in Wednesday night's elimination game. Chinese Taipei clinched a spot in the international championship game with its victory over Venezuela, and Aruba advanced with a win over Japan. Catch up on all of the action below. Thursday's LLWS schedule Santa Cruz Aruba vs. Barquisimeto Venezuela, 3 p.m ET, ESPN Winner advances to International championship game South Carolina vs. Nevada, 7 p.m. ET, ESPNWinner advances to U.S. championship game Little League World Series format In case you need a refresher, the 2025 Little League World Series will feature a total of 20 teams: 10 from the United States and 10 international clubs. Those teams will compete in a modified double-elimination tournament. Play began Wednesday, Aug. 13, with the winners advancing and remaining in the winners' portion of the bracket. Starting Saturday, Aug. 16, the teams that lost their first games will face off to determine which teams remain in the event. Once a team loses twice, it is eliminated. That changes once the championships begin. The U.S. championship game and the international championship game will be held Saturday, Aug. 23, and will both be single-elimination games. The same thing will be true for the LLWS championship game. That creates a scenario in which a team could be eliminated from the event with just one loss. Games will last six innings. If a game is tied after six innings, both teams will play the seventh inning as normal, with no ghost runners on base. If a game extends past the seventh inning, a runner will open each inning on second base. How to watch the Little League World Series Every game through Friday will air on ESPN. On Saturday, both the U.S. championship game and the international championship game will air on ABC. The LLWS championship will also air on ABC on Sunday. That game will begin at 3 p.m. ET. Fans looking to watch the consolation game on the 24th will be able to do so over on ESPN2. That game begins at 10 a.m. ET.
