Article content The pilot of the SkyWest Airlines Flight 3612 contacted the tower at Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday requesting to land because of a passenger causing a disturbance. Article content Article content 'He's in a fight with our flight attendant right now, trying to open the emergency exit,' the pilot said, according to audio captured by LiveATC. Article content Article content The disturbance happened shortly after the SkyWest flight departed from Omaha, Nebraska, around 5:30 p.m. Thursday, according to police. The flight was diverted to and landed safely at the Cedar Rapids airport, according to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration. Article content The flight was able to travel on to Detroit later Thursday night, according to a statement issued by SkyWest Airlines, a Utah-based regional carrier that operates flights for major airlines like United, Delta, American and Alaska Airlines. Delta Connection flight 3612, operated by SkyWest Airlines, was flying from Omaha to Detroit when the disturbance happened around 7 p.m. local time, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement. A passenger was 'in a fight with our flight attendant right now, trying to open the emergency exit,' the pilot radioed the tower at Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids, according to a recording by the website The passenger did not get the door open and the plane landed safely and taxied to the gate. Video posted to social media by a passenger showed law enforcement escorting a man off the plane with his hands restrained behind his back. 'SkyWest has zero tolerance for unruly behavior as safety for our customers and crew is our top priority,' the airline said in a statement. So far this year there have been more than 870 reports of unruly passengers on planes in the US, according to FAA data. Potential penalties include jail time, fines and travel restrictions. The flight crew 'followed procedures to return to Chicago O'Hare to have an unruly passenger removed,' a spokesperson for the airline said. 'Delta has zero tolerance for unruly behavior and will always work with law enforcement to that end. We apologize to our customers for the delay in their travel as safety and security comes before everything else at Delta,' the statement said. Hours before the news broke, the former defensive end shared a post to his Instagram Stories documenting his travels. 'We out Chicago!!! It's up, it better be!!!' he wrote over a video of him riding in a vehicle as it approached an airport terminal. The Vikings and Griffen did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment. Griffen, a four-time Pro Bowler, last played in the NFL during the 2020-2021 football season. Prior to his professional career, the Arizona native played college football for the USC Trojans. He also briefly played for the Dallas Cowboys and the Detroit Lions. In 2018, the Vikings ordered Griffen to receive a mental health evaluation after having what the NFL described as "verbal outbursts in practice," citing a police report. He also had incidents involving police at a downtown hotel, and another at his home after he trespassed on his teammate Trae Waynes' residence. Griffen was not arrested and did not face any criminal charges, the league reported.
