The iPhone Fold design might be losing to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 even before it's announced

iPhone Fold render | Image credit — Ming-Chi Kuo The iPhone Fold might be very thin in comparison to other Apple products, but it may still fall behind the likes of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Honor Magic V5. A new rumor claims that Apple's foldable could be just 4.8mm thick when unfolded. A report by Instant Digital on Weibo claims (source in Chinese) that the frame of the foldable iPhone will measure just 4.8mm. If that information turns out to be true, that could be Apple's thinnest device, at least when unfolded. The iPhone 16 is 7.8mm thick, and the 13-inch M4 iPad Pro, which Apple says is the thinnest product it has ever created, measures just 5.1mm. Thinness has always been important for Apple, sometimes to a fault, but this time the company might lag. Even if the iPhone Fold is as thin as claimed, the current generation of foldables is already thinner. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is only 4.2mm thick when unfolded, and the Ivory White version of the Honor Magic V5 measures at just 4.1mm. More strikingly, the iPhone Fold could fall even further behind when closed. Theoretically, the device could be as slim as 9.6mm when folded, but that's unlikely, and even Instant Digital warns against such a conclusion. The leaker says that 'the thickness of the inner screen frame pad' should be taken into consideration, though they don't share how thick that element might be. When folded, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is 8.9mm thick, and the Honor Magic V5 is 8.8mm for its thinner Ivory White version. If we assume that the iPhone Fold also has an extra 0.5mm in the thickness of both sides when folded, it could reach over 10mm. On paper, 9mm and 10mm don't sound that different, but that's still over a 10% difference. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 | Image credit — PhoneArena This rumor is very likely to be close to Apple's actual achievements. Instant Digital doesn't have the best track record, but it has made correct claims in the past. Besides, this new report confirms earlier rumors from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who is considered a more reliable source. In March, Kuo claimed that the iPhone Fold would measure between 4.5mm and 4.8mm when unfolded. That means Apple could still achieve more competitive dimensions for its first foldable smartphone. I think that the rumor will turn out to be close to the truth. Apple counts on display technology from Samsung, so it would be a surprise if the iPhone Fold manages to outdo the Galaxy Z Fold 7 in that regard. What's more, Apple will likely focus on other features when promoting its foldable phone, and it'll compare it to other Apple devices, like it did with the M4 iPad Pro. I Finally Held a Foldable That Doesn't Feel Like Two Stacked Phones: the Galaxy Z Fold 7

If I closed my eyes and you put the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 in my hands, I would think you'd handed me one of dozens of ordinary phones that share a similar shape and weight. But when I'd open my eyes, and then unfold the two panels of this new phone, well, that's a whole different story. I got to check out the Z Fold 7 with eyes wide open during Samsung's Unpacked event in New York last week, along with the Z Flip 7 and Z Flip 7 FE. I've used many foldable phones, but the feel of these struck me as being the future of the category. Now Playing: Ultra Thin: First Look at the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 02:45 At 8.9mm thick when folded and weighing 215 grams, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 doesn't feel much different than a standard slate phone. The 6.5-inch cover display makes it something I can see myself willingly using to scroll through social media, text and watch videos. But when opened, Samsung's book-style foldable is anything but ordinary. At just 4.2mm thick, it boasts a wildly slim profile that steals the spotlight from even the 5.8mm-thick Galaxy S25 Edge. The 8-inch inner display is 11% larger than the one on last year's Z Fold 6, which should help with multitasking. And a Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 cover and Victus 2 back make it feel nice and sturdy. The Z Fold 7 feels exactly like what foldable phones have strived to be all along: thin, lightweight and spacious -- and also as "normal" as possible, at least where it matters. It also features an impressive 200-megapixel main camera, just like the not-so-thin S25 Ultra. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 weighs 215 grams, and has a more spacious display. Joseph Maldonado/CNET/PCMag In an exclusive interview, Drew Blackard, Samsung's senior vice president of mobile product management, told CNET that by slimming down the Fold and leveling up the cameras, the book-style phone "is now a mainstream form factor." After holding the phone, I can understand what he means. The Z Fold 7 does away with the thicker build and scaled-back cameras that previously characterized foldables, and introduces something that feels equal parts sleek and familiar. Samsung is by no means the first company to launch a thin foldable; Oppo's Find N5, Huawei's Mate X6 and Honor's Magic V3 also boast impressively slim designs, to name a few. But with the release of both the Galaxy S25 Edge and now the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Samsung is doubling down on the skinny phone craze. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 boasts the same 200-megapixel wide camera as the S25 Ultra. Joseph Maldonado/CNET/PCMag An Ultra experience on an ultra-thin phone By bringing its 200-megapixel wide camera to the Z Fold 7 and S25 Edge, Samsung is proving you don't have to compromise camera quality for a slimmer build. It's a notable example of a foldable breaking away from the hardware limitations that have traditionally scaled back the cameras. It'll be interesting to see how competitors strive to match or outdo that feat. The Z Fold 7 also has a 12-megapixel ultrawide and 10-megapixel telephoto camera, as well as 10-megapixel selfie cameras on the inner and cover screens. I look forward to testing the phone's cameras out in the real world. Like the S25 series, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 packs a Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. It comes out of the box with One UI 8 and Android 16. What I'm perhaps most relieved about is that the Z Fold 7's battery maintains last year's 4,400-mAh capacity, despite the new phone's slimmer build. The biggest downside of the S25 Edge is its 3,900-mAh battery, giving it the lowest capacity across the S25 series. I was fully prepared for the Z Fold 7 to take a similar hit, but its expanded real estate helped save it from that pitfall. Battery life is one of the biggest considerations when people buy a new phone, according to a CNET survey, so it's good Samsung didn't scale that back. We'll see how it actually holds up in my day-to-day use and if it's a match for my endless TikTok scrolling and photo taking. Joseph Maldonado/CNET/PCMag Not-so-slim price The Galaxy Z Fold 7's cutting-edge specs don't come cheap. The phone starts at $2,000, which is $100 more than last year's Z Fold 6. You're certainly paying a premium for both that slimmer build (the S25 Edge starts at $1,100) and the Ultra-grade camera (the S25 Ultra starts at $1,300). The Z Fold 7 is available in jet black, blue shadow and silver shadow, as well as an exclusive mint color when you order on Preorders are open now, and the phones arrive July 25.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 is actually thinner than the Honor Magic V5

Here's a clear case of 'looking too much at spec sheets may not be very productive', especially when we're talking about 0.1mm differences. See, on paper, the Honor Magic V5 in one specific colorway (called Ivory White) is advertised by the brand to be 8.8mm thick when folded. Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold7, on the other hand, is 8.9mm thick when folded. So there's a clear winner here, right? A clear "world's thinnest book-style foldable', as it were. Well, not so fast. Place the two side by side and try to balance something off of them, as famed Chinese leaker Ice Universe has done in the video below, and the roles are reversed, as you can see - the Fold7 is clearly the thinner device. There is no accurate measuring tool, but we can still draw a rigorous conclusion: Galaxy Z Fold7 is the thinnest folding mobile phone in the world. I switched the positions of two mobile phones during the test, and the results remained the same, which showed that the factors of… — PhoneArt (@UniverseIce) July 15, 2025 So what gives? Well, it's all about the pre-applied screen protector on the Magic V5, which is not part of the official thickness measurement, but is, well, pre-applied, when you buy the phone, whereas the Samsung doesn't have such a perk. This just goes to show how irrelevant a 0.1mm thickness difference is in real life, despite brands loving to claim things like "world's thinnest" and "world's lightest". So please keep this in mind - you won't feel 0.1mm and you won't feel 1g in real life, thus it only makes sense to make your choice for buying a device based on claims like "world's thinnest" and "world's lightest" if you then want to brag to your friends about your device wearing such a (sometimes very short-lived) crown. In this day and age, a lot of foldables are already thin enough and light enough to be very comfortable to use even when folded, so we'd advise you to make your pick based on other traits they have which you require. What do you think, though? Is all of this too much hype or are even minute differences like these important to you? Let us know in the comments. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7

These Key Upgrades Will Be Packed Into The Pixel 10 Pro Fold

New Pixel 9 smartphones from Google are shown at the company's headquarters. The display of the ... More Pixel 9 Pro Fold can be unfolded (Photo by Andrej Sokolow/picture alliance via Getty Images) August will see the next 'Made By Google' event, where the Mountain View-based company is expected to launch the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. The latter—as Google's only foldable device—is in a unique place to promote innovation in the market and for Google to offer its viewpoint on what a good Android foldable should be. Ahead of that launch, more details on 2025's foldable Pixel are becoming clear. The latest notes come via Android Headlines. The core specs of 16 GB of RAM and either 256 GB or 512 GB of storage have been heavily trailed and are as expected. The camera specs include a 48-megapixel primary lens, a 10.6-megapixel ultrawide lens, and a 10.8-megapixel x5 telephoto lens, which all make up the rear camera assembly. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold Chipset The first is the Tensor G5 chipset. While not specifically visible to consumers, Google's switch of the fabrication from Samsung to TSMC will be poured over with benchmarking comparisons, real-world testing, and comparisons not just to what came before but to the current Samsung Exynos, Qualcomm Snapdragon and Mediatek Dimensity options. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold Battery What will be noticeable to consumers is the impact of the increased battery capacity of the foldable Pixel. This year's Fold will step up from the 9 Pro Fold's 4,650 mAh to 5,015 mAh. Some of that will no doubt offset the brighter cover screen (with a potential ten percent increase in brightness to 3,000 nits), yet the efficiency improvements of the G5 should balance that out, leaving the extra capacity for increased endurance. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold IP Rating Then you have the protection rating. Last year, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold shipped with IPX8 protection—water-resistant but not waterproof, with no protection against dust. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold will be upgraded to IP68. This is relatively standard across premium handsets, but it's only now showing up on foldables. IP68 offers the same water resistance while adding protection from dust and other small particles. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold Competition Google's foldable Pixel is not launching into an empty space. The two key points of comparison will be the recently launched Galaxy Z Fold7 from Samsung and the Magic V from Honor. The former is focusing on the general consumer audience as Samsung's marketing leans into the benefits of AI, while Honor positions the latter as a more fashionable and cutting-edge design due to its slim nature. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold fits into the space as a reference design, both in terms of hardware and software. While the Pixel range has leaned more into consumer retail over the last few models, Pixels are still seen as clean implementations of Google's Android vision. As foldables move away from the luxury space and become more prevalent in the real world, their role becomes increasingly important, as Google aims to set the tone for a space that has been under development for more than a decade.
